Don't know where Culcheth is mate (Manchester way?), but that is (and has always been) a very, very, very good record indeed! I first heard it on holiday on a barge in the Norfolk Broads, very early 80s - thanks to a tape from my mate Kev Smith - I think he might have taped it of a Radio Hallam show called, wait for it, 'Richard Searling's Soul Source' (Sauce?). Thanks for reminding me what an awesome sound that is - Northern in a nutshell.

Can anybody tell me the track listing of a cassette that NME released in about '86 or so called 'Feet Start Dancin'. I think Ady was involved in it. I know it had The Steinways - You've Been Leadin' Me On and Your Little Sister by The Marvelows. I lost it ages ago and I know there was some absolute killer stuff on it. Would make a brilliant CD reissue. Help me out! Stu

I'm in a quandary..... I don't want my music to be ubiquitous and diluted, maybe even ridiculed by becoming part of the mainstream....but...I want people to hear how fantastic this music is. So, like all the other times northern soul has been on the telly, I'll watch it with trepidation...you never know - maybe they'll get it right this time. If they've got good researchers and a sympathetic producer...... BTW I thought the culture show coverage wasn't that bad (except for the Notts couple). I guess even if they do the clunkingly obvious and play Do I Love You - it IS a great record - imagine you've never heard it before.... First to post it as a topic at 7.30 on Wednesday will get a hot one!

All this talk of 'big lads' is making me feel a bit queasy. But then again, I've probably only got one big lad in my box (come on! I'm not being rude, the rest are boots and reissues).

Hmmm.. some of you guys are a tad bitter. It's not worth it. Though I hate the nostalgia crap and all the marketing, I will not be made to feel ashamed or embarrassed about still loving all of the fantastic records that got me into it in the first place. I'm no oldies dinosaur - I've got into more 'new' sounds in the last 6 months than ever in my life, they are constantly on my playlist. Whether there's a 'real' scene and a 'divvy' scene I don't care to be honest. It's OK to take the best out of the whole thing. If I was a youngster reading this thread I'd probably think twice about being a soul fan. We seem to hate ourselves and what we have become. Just go and put a record on.

Funny that, Dave - I've gone the opposite way! When I first heard Gwen Owens it absolutely blew my head off. Fast forward to today and I wonder what all the fuss was about - don't get me wrong I don't dislike it but, you know, its...okay. For me it's Frank Dell - He Broke Your Game Wide Open on Valise - had it in my box in the late 70s and didn't take much notice of it - a bit slow for me at the time maybe? In fact I lost it in the great Chesterfield Art College Northern Theft of '82 and wasn't that upset. However, today....tuuuune! It's the biggest turnaround of any record I've ever owned. Wish I had it now

Karmello Brooks - when she goes 'de-dooby-da-da' or something like that after the first verse/chorus - she's just so carried away with the joy of just singing! Also a bit later on when her voice growls a bit - magic. Really into female vocals at the mo. This is a good thread and really shows the PASSION of everyone on here - what it's all about.

Hear hear Mike! Long live this great site - and thanks! Soul source is the single biggest factor in re-igniting my passion for Northern soul and for that I thank you. I think I have learned more about my favourite records and artists and heard more new stuff in the past couple of months thanks to the brilliant people who come on here than in 36 years of being into it, not to mention some great advice from these knowledgeable people. Hardly use FB now anyway. Thanks again.

Sorry scooter girl, Dave Turner is spot on - it's not the original US Charger you have, it is a UK reissue by Selectadisc of Nottingham. So what if it's worth a few quid only, it's a brilliant record. Just enjoy it.

Hmmm.. Ernie, I think it's different - these are very benign and friendly influences. Punk was rock music violently reacting against itself - no matter how you think about it it was part of a straight lineage - rocknroll, beat groups, garage rock, all band/guitar based rock. When it started to become diluted and jaded, then there was a 'revolution'. I guess the big transitions in soul have been equally revolutionary, but less confrontational? rnb to motown style soul, to psych soul to funk to disco to hi nrg, house, hip hop etc etc etc Has there been the same kind of animosity towards older genres on the soul scene compared to the attitude of punk towards 'dinosaur rock'? I think rock music journalists have been instrumental in stoking this up. There's been less of a need for a dramatic and vicious soul 'year zero' because the quality, beauty and sheer class of the music has always been pretty consistent. That's my view anyway (even as someone who loves punk and indie and garage rock etc.. as well as soul). Feel free to wade in!…..
