  1. Sorry Pete, just had this picture in my mind of you stood at the back of a Rodigan gig shaking your head saying play some Dr Bird stuff Know what you mean about Winstanley & Butch but it is a review that covers 40 years & RW is still out there doing it (in a fashion!). Must admit that it did seem very Southern biased but it was looking at the UK DJ soul scene in general. Also thought Keb Darge might have scraped in as well. As for B&S it finished in magazine style with issue 1000 but is still on line.
  2. Just been on the Blues & Soul website & I stumbled on this. A list of the top 40 DJ's of the last 40 years on the British Black music scene. Couple of guy's on the Northern & Modern scene get a mention & it's good to see site member Dr Bob Jones on the list (take a bow Dr Bob). Also a couple that might raise a few eyebrows on here like Ian Levine, Russ Winstanley & Jazzie B & some that might surprise a few as well like Tony Blackburn & David Rodigan (sure Pete Smith will tell you more about Mr Rodigan). Was wondering who you think should also be on the list if you had compiled it? Soul Sam, 64 years young & still going strong. Ady Croasdell, 100 club & Kent records. Colin Curtis, goes way back to the Torch & still doing the Business on both the Northern & Modern scene. Roger Williams, No one better at digging out the best new release Soul sounds. Any more???? Here's the link. https://www.bluesandsoul.com/feature/226/top_40_djs/
  3. Think you'll find thats his son. Morris Chestnut Jnr as opposed to Morris Chestnut snr.
  4. There's a link on the page called Northern Rarites. Just hit it & it said no items found. Priceless
  5. Was gonna say ban e'm but now iv'e seen the Blackpool video featuring Billy Elliott & Bet Lynch I think every event should have one every month. Get Richard Searling on the Strictly Come Dancing panel for the next series.
  6. Link below for anybody who want's a listen to last night's show via the BBC's music player thingy. https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio2_aod.shtml?radio2/r2_allsinging Also a Link to Craig Charles's last Funk & Soul show on radio 6. Well worth a listen. https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/6music_aod.shtml?6music/6m_funk
  7. Thanks for taking the time to dig up last year's tips Sean. Some interesting reading. Just looking at my 3 tips. 1, Boss Man - You're Taking Too Long - Don't think I heard it played once but still convinced it will have it's day. Quality 60's Soul by non other than Kenny Gamble under a pseudonym I believe. 2, Satisfaction Unlimited - Don't change The Subject - Turned into a monster on the Crossover scene & was even deemed worthy of an inclusion on the Sean Robbins Sunday Soul Selection compilation. 3, Jackie Moore - Do Ya, Got What It Takes - Your old Clifton Hall spin that I tipped for a revival. Did hear it played a few times in the last 12 months & not just by you & me Right then, onto this year. 1, Jimmy Jackson - Footsteps In The Shadows - Buddah. Got 70's Northern monster wrote all over it & can still be picked up for under £10. Just watch it go & then put another 0 on the price. Buy it now. 2, L.T.D. - Never Get Enough Of Your Love - A&M. Another forgotten 70's gem & also still around for under a tenner. Just so nice. 3, The Creators - Just You & Me - RCA. Expect to pay more than £10 for this one as it ain't that easy to pick up & demand seems to be rising. Noticed Dave & Bri Pinches are including it it thier spots just lately. Who put you onto that guy's 4, Dazzle - You Dazzle Me - De Lite. The 'left field' choice. Totally mad Boogie track from 1979 that got a few play's by Sam & Arthur around it's release in 1979. Every time I play it out it always seems to attract interest. Also in demand with the Euro Boogie collectors so not that easy to get now & the price seems to be climbing.
  8. Well, what can I say. Listened to Craig's show last night & he beat Stuart Marconies shows by a country mile. Got to say that SM is a far better DJ but CC has obviously got a far better ear & passion for the music & it showed. Also gave some very good info on all the tracks played & kept it interesting. Actually listening to a BBC stream of Craig's last Funk & Soul show as I type this & he's just played Flowers - For Real followed by Lamont Dozier's version of Going Back To My Roots so he obviously knows his stuff. 9. Just off Donny road near the A1 Enjoyed the party & catch you all again in 12 months. Up & outa here Happy new year guy's
  10. Originally Sheffield for 24 years but been in Rotherham (or Rovrem as we call it round here!) for the last 23.
  11. Eh? Tommy Tate - Tune! Is CC reading this?
  12. Tommy Tate - If You Ain't Man Enough. Top tune
  13. Bottle of Bud for me. Wonder if Craig'll put me some Modern on?
  14. Listening & to be honest he's doing a pretty good job. Far better than some of the shows that iv'e heard Stewart Marcone do. Good across the board mix of stuff & also some good info on the tracks so he's obviously done his homework.
  15. Think you're right Dave. Fat City in Manchester still open as well. Just checked their website.
  16. Some great label scans, info & soundclips on the link below. Click on RECORDS on the home page. https://www.danceclassics.net/index.htm
  17. Might be worth trying Gareth Donavon (girthdevon on here) or Robbie Grant. They had the last copies I saw for sale. Glad I got mine when I did as the price seems to be flying up though so be quick.
  18. Thanks for the trip down memory lane Pete Be nice if some other members could post the contents of their play boxes up for us all to see. PS, shouldn't The Carstairs be a bit nearer the front
  19. Totally with you r/e Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings Sean Can't beleive a UK promoter ain't had the balls to get them booked at one of the major soul events over here while they're still in their prime. Just take an unbiased listen to Tell Me & Keep On Looking off the current 100 Days album on the link below. Wouldn't sound out of place alongside some of the big hitting nighter stuff that gets played. https://www.amazon.com/Days-Nights-Sharon-J...s/dp/B000UO75AY As for Whinehouse (spelling intended) give me Joss Stone any day of the week & keep an eye on the 2007 thread in Media to hear why.
  20. Seems to be fashionable to slate the top 500 book at the moment but i'm willing to bet that the majority of folks who are slagging it off actually own a copy or have at least read it cover to cover several times. Must admit I own a copy & I disagree with several things in it but could all the folks who slag it off do a better job? I doubt it somehow. If you think you could try listing a top 20 never mind a top 500 post it up below but remember it must be a general top 20 covering the Northern scene & NOT your personal favourites.
  21. Same here Dave. Strange thing is though I should hate it but I don't. Will post part 1 up in a minute.
  22. Wouldn't mind betting it's the only complete Robert Johnson collection in the world if he has got e'm all.
  23. Still after a clip of the A side if anyone can PM it to me. Seems an mp3 of this is rarer than the bloody actual record
  24. Bet it was the Al Gardner
