Souled Out The Film
I would far rather hear anyone singing than Elvis. That aside, I believe the producers have said that they would use "original" tracks for dance sequences anyway haven't they? This being the case surely that satisfies everyone doesn't it? If they use contemporary artists for other bits of the film does that matter. Surely not. I'm sure that if they have scenes at home or in a cafe then if the radio's playing they'll have david essex etc on in the background

Souled Out The Film
I'm a bit late to this thread but ..... It's a film. It apparently is set in 1974 with Northern Soul and Wigan Casino as a backdrop for the boy meets girl story. Surely the only people who decide what music is used and in what context are the people who are being paid,to use their artistic discretion to determine what music / artists etc, by the people who have invested their MONEY in the project. Let's not forget that films (just like the records we all love were) are in the main made to make money. The fact is that we are in a time where someone with the required funds feels that Northern Soul has enough currency to make a viable project. I am sure it could just as easy be set against a Glam Rock background - mind you given Gary Glitter's current notoriety maybe not, as how could you make a movie with that background without featuring his music? Anyway I digress. The point is, it's a movie. It's not real life, it's a movie. It's not a documentary, it's a movie. Whether they use all original 60's & 70's tracks or not, it doesn't really matter. It's NOT a Northern Soul movie, it's a movie that uses NS as a backdop. Most people who see it won't even know what's original NS and what isn't. And say they do use totally original tracks as a lot on here have advocated, then what? Will these only be acceptable if taken directly from original vinyl? Someone (I forget who) said earlier it's all about the records. That is a whole other discussion that's been played out on here numerous times ad nauseam. There's Northern Soul - which is about music with a particular beat (irrespective of recording format, era or colour of artists skin) There's rare soul and then there's record collecting Sometimes they can get confused. And I think that's definiterly the case in some the posts on this topic. As far as the movie goes. Go and see it (I will), don't go and see it. It's a movie, that's all. Phil

Wanted - Silhouettes
I did go back and bid up to £769.00, but obvioulsy lost. You may as well sell me your minter, and we'll call it VG+? Cos it soon will be once I get hold of it. I bought a beautiful Saxie Russell W/D off JM's last week. It now has a big scuff across it as After iIplayed it I didn't put it back in its sleeve and the kids knocked it on the floor I'm hopeless at looking after records. the amount of nice tunes that I've scratched and broken over the years doesn't bear thinking about. Phil

Wanted - Silhouettes
Well I am the eternal optimist. Anyway It doesn't have to be in tip-top condition. Even if it was, it wouldn't be for lomg after i got hold of it as i treat my records like crap anyway. Phil

Wanted - Silhouettes

Import Duty
I've recently started to try and re-purchase all the records that i sold some years ago. This usually involves paying people in the US lots of $. And then when the records finally hits these shores, paying a load of import duty & VAT etc. Does anyone know if there is any "legitimate" way of paying less VAT & duty? These charges are sometimes crippling (£300.00 in the last week alone) Cheers Phil

A Question Of Earnings
I agree with a lot of what's been already said. As for me personally, i just have always bought what I liked (if I could afford it) and a lot of what I didn't particularly like sometimes, if I thought that I could sell it/ trade it on. I foresook "normal" holidays for most of the 80's and 90's, instead going to the US whenever I could to search out vinyl. That meant that I could always get hold of records at relatively, and sometimes ludicrously, cheap prices. I could then sell these on at the prevailing price at the time to buy the sounds I couldn't find in the US. That said, I have spent far too much money on records in my time. And now I've got the bug again Phil

Berry Gordys Cousin Sings Record
I think I may be related. I've met quite a few Dick's when I've visted Detroit over the years, and one of the backroom boys at Motown told me that Berry "was a real Dick!" Coincidence? I think not. Now then. Where's me royalties? Phil Dick
