To stand out from the crowd. There’s a plethora of new releases these days. And standing out can be the difference between getting a play or not. And I don’t do just plain white labels. They are proper white label promos. it crates a perception of both quality and value.

Most of my promo copies are for promotional use. But I will and do sell the odd few. I still usually fail to make any money on most releases though.

I’ve only just seen this thread as I do t come on that often. I produce proper printed white label promos for “some” of my releases. Not all of them. I do them to send out to DJ’s, radio stations, magazines etc. And, yes, also to sell as a limited edition collectors item at a premium. I can’t speak for any other label, but I do no more than 10% of the production run as promos. in the case of the latest album I put out last month - Garcia Walker & Durrell. There were 50 promo copies made. Over half of these went out to press, radio, bloggers etc. Most of the rest were sold at £30 instead of the normal £20 retail price. Got a couple left if anyone’s interested? I see nothing wrong with the practice, and neither, it seems, do the vinyl buying public. Also. To produce a promo with a proper printed label is more expensive than the regular stock copies. You have to get the same number of labels printed (500 pairs). I also had stickers for the album sleeve too. You have to pay an additional origination charge etc. And there is a small run charge from the pressing plant. They have to change over the labels and charge for the privilege

Artist - LJ Johnson & Barbara Pennington Title - 24 Hours A Day Label - Soul Purpose Catalogue # - SPR 2002 Format - 7 inch single Release date - July 4th 2021 Retail Price - £12.00 Incredibly it’s 45 years since this timeless 45 first surfaced! But it’s only now that it’s become a dazzling duet. Infamous UK record producer and songwriter Ian Levine cut his chops in 1976 linking up with Chicago studio wizards Paul Wilson and Danny Leake and cutting stunning Northern Soul records with Windy City vocalists Barbara Pennington, LJ Johnson and Evelyn Thomas. The singles caused a sensation by giving the, then young, upstart producer his debut hits in the UK pop charts. Enthused by this success, Ian got back together with producer and songwriter Leake (who later worked with Stevie Wonder), and arranger Wilson (he went on to link up with Jerry Butler) and the trio masterminded a truly epic gem aimed at the booming USA Disco scene - Barbara Pennington’s 24 Hours A Day. The incredible production. opus - complete with a stunning lead vocal, incredible scurrying strings, a song that sounded like it was the equivalent of Ashford & Simpson on steroids -became me a massive disco anthem when released on the United Artists label. And quickly became a timeless Northern Soul classic It was loved so much on both sides of the Atlantic that Ian used the same backing track some time later to record a male vocal version for AVI by LJ Johnson. Compared to the all conquering Barbara Pennington gem it went under the radar of everyone except those in the know, despite being rather good in its own right. Now after tracking down the original 24 track studio masters, the two versions have been remixed by Paul Mooney to create a unique boy-girl duet. It sounds like it should have been done in the first place, even better than the original versions. DETROIT A-GO-GO PRIVATE LIVE STREAM VIA FACEBOOK LIVE FRIDAY OCTOBER 23RD 2020. STARRING THE CONTOURS, PAT LEWIS, CAROLYN CRAWFORD, SPYDER TURNER, JNR WALKERS ALL STAR BAND 10PM - 11PM BST. During these very difficult impossible times the Soul Scene has very much been put on hold all major venues, weekenders, Allnighters, Soul nights are all suspended until further notice, one major event sadly cancelled is Detroit A-GO-GO which was scheduled to happen in Leeds in October, now fingers crossed it has been re scheduled for next July at the Cleethorpes weekender, everyone has been affected by this pandemic in terms of being able to function as ENTERTAINERS, DJ's and PROMOTERS of Soul events, the artists who gave us this music in the first place those who survive are unable to perform in America resulting in little or no income, pretty much the same for many people right now, recently Carolyn Crawford and Pat Lewis have done LIVE PERFORMANCES VIA FACEBOOK LIVE where people could make a donation if they so wished to basically help these wonderful people out so much so Phil & Kim Dick, Neil Rushton have put together another Live Stream direct from a venue in Detroit set to happen on Friday October 23rd this will be a PAY FOR VIEW EVENT @ $15.00 Approx £12.60 based on two people viewing the show, this is no hard sell or must do but it's a small price to pay for what is a unique Soul Scene first, this event will be a professional live feed, performed in a NON audience venue in Detroit, PA engineers, filming crew, artists etc. are pretty much doing this for a very small amount of money but it does have costs to be able to do this, there is a break even figure to make this happen so we all know the SOUL SCENE can pull together on this to make it happen and I for one know we need a little joy right now in this shit storm we are all in. Mark Bicknell on behalf of Phil & Kim Dick, Neil Rushton, THE CONTOURS, PAT LEWIS, CAROLYN CRAWFORD, SPYDER TURNER, JNR WALKERS ALL STAR BAND AND EVERYONE CONNECTED WITH DETROIT A-GO-GO LIVE.
