  1. A brilliant night with top class sounds from beginning to end from Andy, Phil & Joan. We had a great time and as I have said before it's always worth the 400 mile round trip. A big thank you to Joan, Phil & Baz for putting the night together and for inviting me on. It was great to be able to play some underplayed tunes which didn't sound too out of place and the Grumpy faithful seemed to appreciate. Love Grumpy Soul!
  2. Really gutted that I could'nt make the first takeover, especially when I got the rave reviews from the Scottish troops. It will be a pleasure and a privilege to play some records to the Grumpy faithful and in the company of Joan, Phil & Andy Rix. Poignant too that it will be the anniversary of Pete Lawson's passing, I pullled a record off the shelves last week that still had his handwriting on the sleeve, so that will definitley be getting spun. Just make sure that the bar is well stocked, all that whistling is a thirsty business!! Look forward to seeing you all, it's been way too long
  3. Thanks PaulW for posting the Echoes scan, Slightly off topic, but this is the issue with John Anderson's letter, where he confirms that the orange label copies of The Detroit Executives- Cool Off are originals, not the green ones. There has been some discussion about this record in the past, great to see his answer in print at last.

  23. Well that's a downer. Was looking forward to our first trip down and we have two pre-paid hotel rooms. Can't make July 11th as we are doing Berlin weekender. Have you got any future dates and I will try and get the hotel to move the booking. Keith
  24. Godzilla, We visited Chicago in 2010 and had a great time. Would recommend that you get one of these multi-day transport tickets which gets you unlimited travel on trains and buses all over the city. If you are lucky windy city soul club at the empty bottle will be on when you are in town, a fantastic Saturday night of northern where £5 records and £500 records are played side by side to a packed dancefloor. We also visited "soul night" at Danny's Tavern Bucktown which was on the first Wednesday of each month, really more of a funk night in the back room of a bar, with original 45s all night and again packed out. Jimmy Burns is host at Buddy Guys most Monday nights which features his band and an open mic session. The night we visited Buddy Guy turned up for an impromptu show and Holly Maxwell did a turn on the open mic! If nothing else you can meet a rare soul legend and the soul food is not too bad either. Jimmy is on at least twice a week in Chicago try jimmyburnsband.com for his schedule, and no he does not have any copies of "I really love you"! You could also visit Chess records at 2120 Michigan Avenue. This is now run as the Willie Dixon Blues Foundation and is not particularly great for soul fans-but it is still good to visit the legendary building. The John Hancock tower has great views of the city and if you get really bored there are quite a few record stores to fill up your day! Shoebox
