60S Newies; Do People Want Them?
Peter Richer replied to Ady Croasdell's topic in All About the SOUL
They might even play the flip 'Baby' too, just for good measure ... -
60S Newies; Do People Want Them?
Peter Richer replied to Ady Croasdell's topic in All About the SOUL
Of course, a promoter could book a DJ who actually owns a copy of the Young Brothers disc on Soul Power. That way they might even get to hear some of their other records, possibly fairly exclusive, which are in the same vein. Then we'd have a show worth travelling for. -

John Manship Auction Results 16-4-2014
Peter Richer replied to JOE TORQUAY's topic in Look At Your Box
Yes indeed. Also, it doesn't mean someone else could have got it for only one increment up (i.e. £23) either - the person who bid £12 may have had a maximum at, say, £500 or more sitting on it. You never find out unless you can be prepared to actually log on and bid. Well done to the winner (if it did in fact sell) ... you were the only person who could be bothered to make an offer. -
Whats The Difference Between A Good Dj And A Great Dj?
Peter Richer replied to Andy Jackson's topic in All About the SOUL
And the other one says, 'don't worry, because it's Screen-Sam, and: - he's not going to show the same old film we've seen a thousand times before; - he's not going to run a grainy, muffled knock-off DVD from the dodgy market stall; - he's not going to talk a load of crap every 3 minutes throughout the performance; - he's not going to show exactly the same film as the one we've just been subjected to merely an hour ago; and - we're in luck because he's got the only copy of a brilliant, long-lost, forgotten but as yet unseen Clint Eastwood/Steve McQueen/Audrey Hepburn/Monty Python movie, and it's rumoured he'll be premiering it tonight.' -
Not being critical of you at all Jocko, but just wanted to point out (to everyone, really) that as far as I can see - in relation to this particular auction item - JM has not used Soul-Source at all. Not one post. Every SS member who has posted on this thread, guessing records and talking about his marketing strategy, has done his job for him. Nice successful piece of psychology by John though

Hi Nev, Did a Junior McCants (and I think I know which one it would be ) go for more in a private sale than the auctioned Mello Souls? Genuine question, because if I remember rightly the publicly sold one on E-bay went for £9k+ didn't it? Oh, and the Prophets sold for just shy of £10k. Cheers mate.

You are quite right on the autograph Robb, Chris was kind enough to sign it during her appearance at Skegness a couple of months ago. This test press came to me from Tim Brown, who bought it directly from Ron Murphy.

Northern Soul Top 500 Time For A Review
Peter Richer replied to John May's topic in All About the SOUL
Yeah, I was thinking that. And so do numbers 187 and 199 !! Was this list compiled in New York, New York? -
First of all, let me declare an interest. It is my Chris Clark record which is currently up for auction, so people should be aware of that before I make any comments. Thank you Lee (Dobber) for your kind words on our dealings and conversations over the last year or so; and, from a position of your having seen them, you made some accurate points over both the Chris Clark and Martin Luther King records. For anybody who might be interested in the record, or have any queries, I would suggest that you firstly read the description on the auction page, then do feel free to give Pat Brady a call (he has the vinyl and all supporting evidence to hand) and he will be happy to talk you through it in detail. Other than that, I shall try to refrain from posting again unless it is to generally clarify any new points (or mis-information) which need responding to. It is not my intention to try to 'bump' this thread or use it as a sales promotion. I would however welcome PMs or phone calls if anybody wishes to contact me. Kind regards, Peter

Little Jimmy Scott-It Rained Forty Days And Nights-Giant
Peter Richer replied to a topic in Record Wants
JM's is still there, at £450, in Ex condition. But it has Do You Get The Message on the flip. Don't forget there was a second release on Giant, with Nobody But You backing it. That one is generally a little cheaper. It depends whether you care about the B-side, and, of course, condition, in terms of what price you're likely to get one for. -
John Manship Auction Result 3-7-2013
Peter Richer replied to JOE TORQUAY's topic in Look At Your Box
I hope you do pick one up Bob. Hope I get a few nice deals too. Not likely to get any takers on the back of a strong auction price though, particularly as it is in line with current 'book' prices (yes, even Tim's (£600), which is rather old now). If I had a copy of the Grand Prix's I would probably be able to trade it in with a dealer for £400+ worth of other stuff at the moment. Anyway, you're in a better place to find one under the radar over there. Didn't someone say the current Mello Souls was bought for $20? ... very nice. So good luck! -
John Manship Auction Result 3-7-2013
Peter Richer replied to JOE TORQUAY's topic in Look At Your Box
Before anyone sells their near mint Grand Prix's to Bob for £200, hold on a minute - I'll give you £250 for it! I'll also make serious offers of £3,500 for an ex+ Mello Souls, and £150 for a m- Leroy Barbour. Cash waiting -
Isn't that what CDs are for? That way he can still listen to rare or expensive stuff at home; plus keep his integrity when buying vinyl, and especially when playing them out. There are too many great records within range of even a modest budget to have to resort to going down the (vinyl) reissue route. It also tends to produce a more interesting and distinctive collection or DJ set, and he'll learn a lot more in the process.

It's the ultra rare alternative title.

And, as it happens, a poignant reminder that no record has a price which it should be. In an open market a record will sell for whatever price it makes at a period in time, given all the circumstances prevailing on that particular day. Some people will be jealous if their copy didn't fetch as much when they sold it. Conversely, others might be resentful if they wanted to buy a copy but couldn't afford it, or got outbid. The same feelings often apply when there has been a real bargain on set-sale, but some other lucky punter beat them to it!

Ha ha ha ... nice!

Don't mean to be rude Garry, but what exactly does that mean? There are a lot of great, 'underplayed' and collectable records in Kev Roberts' first Top 500 book. Examples, which a lot of serious collectors would love (and I would personally be proud to own or play out - especially at ovo events), include: Cairos Eddie Parker Del Larks Al Williams Johnny Hampton Don Gardner Willie Hutch Debonairs Eddie Daye Melvin Davis Joe Matthews People's Choice Empires Masqueraders - DYLMB Pat Lewis - NOTL Ivorys Inspirations - NOECTYP Lillie Bryant Dean Courtney - LYJCWA Tamala Lewis Frankie Beverly - BOMH Candi Staton - NYGTUH JoAnn Courcy Eula Cooper De-Lites Jackie Beavers - INMB Professionals Larry Clinton - and that's not even counting many of the cheaper items. Plus, from Kev's 'bubbling under' selection: Inspirations - YWIMC Donna King Rita & Tiaras Norma Jenkins Yvonne Vernee Lynne Vernado - WAWL Just Brothers - Carlena Ellusions Gwen Owens - YWAN And then, there are those that I, personally, don't even like much: Mr. Soul Magnetics - LIG (love HYMOS though!) Jimmy Burns John & Wierdest Billy Woods William Powell Damon Fox George Pepp Tommy Ridgley OK, so they are not new discoveries, or unknowns, but (especially at ovo events where they are none too common) they are generally very welcome additions to the playlist. Granted, at 'upfront' all-nighters they are not going to dominate the sets of Butch or Mick H. etc., but these records (and others) are worthy of significant respect.
-
This is almost like the alter-ego of the Mello Souls thread. Not that you can't like both of course. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Ha ha - love it!
-
Loads of great cheap classics of course. Jackie Wilson is good for a few, and I'd pick Whispers with it being not far off a fiver. Then there's some terrific northern on Motown - love Martha & Vandellas, and both One Way Out and Gotta Let You Go have been favourites for a long time.
-
No, it's definitely not just you, I have several inadvertent doubles. I think the last one was Eddie Holland - Just A Few More Days - Motown. Don't think I deserve a buggering as punishment though!
-
Just to let you know - It's up on the auction site now. OK bidders ... off you go ...

While we're on the subject, it is also very annoying when someone puts up a want for something like, say, 'Dena Barnes', and that is the only information they put in the body of their post too. Nobody knows whether they want an issue, or a demo; maybe a bootleg; perhaps they want a legit reissue such as a Grapevine; or whatever. It then takes umpteen further posts to find out what the hell they're after. Or worse still, it wastes the time and effort of genuine people who tried to be helpful by digging out a record, checking condition, play grading it, deciding on a price, then writing a detailed PM. Only to be told something like 'Jesus Christ mate, I can't afford £400, I was only looking to pay a tenner'.
