And another little snippet for those anoraks among us who like the technical details of records - both the Touch of Class and Viola Edwards presses have the same Monarch delta number in the deadwax: 97602. I'm not sure why. Perhaps one was withdrawn in favour of the other. If so I don't know which came first or why Anthony Renfro would have wanted the change. Any definitive information would be nice. Anyone?

I think it's one of those records that people don't want to part with - demo or issue. Too good a record, and too elusive, to let go for its nominal 'book' price. You'd have to be desperate or disillusioned (or found a box full!) to sell it. Maybe not super-rare, but difficult to acquire.

Maybe, sometimes, that might be true Roger. But I also know that many of my friends who either do not collect vinyl, or who do not wish to DJ, are very much against the playing of bootlegs, re-issues or CDs at northern soul events too. They (as I am) are concerned with the principle of the thing. Plus they (as I do) believe that a collector or DJ who is interested in, and cares sufficiently about, building a collection of good quality genuine records - whether they be cheap or expensive - will generally play a more exciting and innovative set.

I've no doubt you're right Pete. It's a lot of money for a ballad, however classy. Motown collectors' piece though, and I would happily pay £400 for a mint minus copy on Tamla.

I bought a Stateside copy because I thought I would never be able to get a Tamla one. That was about 7 or 8 years ago just after John Manship put what was reputedly the first known (to UK collectors) copy up for auction. Until then it was generally believed to be unissued. It was Terry Finn who found that copy. He told me that he found it in a London shop, but didn't realise quite what a significant find it was until some time later. He said he had even had it in his sales box dead cheap for a while (wish I'd seen it!!). Fortunately for Terry he eventually discussed it with JM, they verified what it was, and the auction subsequently took place. I believe it went for over £1,000. Nice one Terry. Wish I could have a find like that to my name.

Are you sure about this? Manship's site states that this is the original, plus the lady herself is credited as co-writer.

Sorry you didn't win it Phil. I think the real lesson though, for e-bay auctions at least (where there is a strict finishing time), is to actually place a high enough bid safely within the time limit to cover your absolute maximum. No need for sniping or trying to react to other bidders' behaviour. Even if you snipe you will ultimately lose out if a higher maximum bid is placed in time (either manually or by snipe) by someone else.

You're very welcome ... glad you found one mate, I always like records of that quality to go to a good home! You're right, it doesn't come up for sale very often, and best to pick up those little gems while they're still 'off the radar' (my expression, which John likes to use a fair bit on his auction items these days, nice one!). Incidentally, that Bobby Paris was mine - I was surprised at the price too, and yes, it was in blinding condition. Cheers, Peter

Hi Nev, fortunately (as it turns out) I bought mine 3 or 4 years ago when I believed I was 'over-paying' at £150. Had wanted it for a while but never saw a copy for sale until then, so went for it. Love the record, but have never got round to playing Good Girl in a spot. Guess I won't have to now - everybody else will be on it as it's clearly the in-thing. Shame you sold yours mate, but like you said, sometimes you need to move on in order to go for a bigger want. ... and Mr. Madras ... how are you doing Russ? Long time no hear - think we must be overdue for a catch-up. Hope all is well.
