I have to go Chalky...'work'....but saw your post as I was going.....it is a 'serious' subject mate....X I want to think on me words as I frequented the majority of 'happening' nighters in the UK through the 90's...and DJ'd at most...to have an opinion. I'll give it later....and appreciate your thoughts on the issue...X LUV SOOTY X

......I'M SORRY OOOOKKKKKAAAYYYY!!!x Gone and upset some sensitive folk....! I said the following in a post above and have been 'contacted' by several 'complainants'....and so wish to set the record straight....sigh.....!x "Shifty...had 20 or so turning up regular at Southend. Len...had a good 100 turning up for their take on it all....Kings Lynn....100 would turn out for an Oldies night.....20/30 for a 'rare'. Norwich...Soul Nights I promoted that way with locals....100 for a Classic night.....we couldn't get more than 20/30 for a rare doo at the time." Shifty 's crew have informed me they could muster 50 on a good night....and the fact i brought 17 din;t count!!!x Len....LEN sez his gigs had 160+ REGULAR with a 450 finish as 'The Finish'...which i'd have been proud of and sorry i missed it!!x Kettering/Rushden/Grimsby and Raunds....could also amass about 100 for a night out....and yes....there was a serious 'Rare' soul element over those ways not getting much exposure who blossomed through St Ives. It is where I heard some of the biggest tunes to evolve over the next 10 years first. Lest I forget.....!x Besides Kings Lynn...there was a 'circle/ring' of folk that travelled/promoted from there and Spalding/Boston and elsewhere in Fen lanes I recall...!!....and all averaged 100 for 'the craic'. How could I have forgot?!!x I have been also asked to admit it was that region that gave me the widest education I received on the Soul Scene too....guilty!!!x Thank you all!!x I have also been reminded that my introduction to 'Rare' soul came from Naaaarwhich. I was also asked not to say to say it like that....so I won't anymore!x A posh lot have had their say too! Peterboro's....3 Sad Men....weren't sad at all...! Upfront and yes I remember being taught the finer arts of 'Rare' music that way too!x Nice 1 Sean et al...!x Ok....?! I hope everybody is happy now!!!!x @@ ~ LUV SOOTY X The consistent question of when am I putting summink together I refuse to answer. First of all I gotta get over this travesty of not recognising all your efforts to the full first. Devastating it is......all I wanted to do was make u all happy back then.....now...20 years later.......i'm a let down.......forgive me.....X I'll let u all know.......FIRST!!!!x A sincere thanx to all you folk who have recalled our happy times together via pm/text and the like....and I will visit soon...like old days!!x....or perhaps a bit more held back this time????....please????!!!.....awwww sh*ttt.......

...I can only speak about what I saw and experienced Chalky!x that was...as I admit happily...from 1993. If it had been split before that which I know it was....well...it gelled soon after and was there to see that happen and assist with it...!x gordon russell 3784 posts Posted Today, 04:56 PM theres never been a decent soul do in cambridge since the MALLET shut...which is a shame, but there ya go...strange world of norman soul Steve G adds....You mean Northern Soul? Or is it Norman Soul? I get confused with all these different badges and labels General Soul Max, Dave H, Chris Brown and a load of others might have something to say bout dat.....since they have put on loads of good nights for the good burghers of Cambridge. Gordon reply's with...hello steve.....that modern vibe ain,t for me.......see ya at lifeline Gordon...I didn't get to go to the Mallet. I did though meet many who have...and many of those 'hard core' came to our nights. Indeed kicked the dance floor off regular at the City Stop by 8pm each month.....no probs!x As I had no idea what had gone before....we did our thing...and it sold out for 5 years as a monthly Soul Night which lead to the St Ives being re-launched with support coming from all over the UK and Belgium on occasion with numbers hovering around 1,000 for each one. That's all I can say about what we did!x For it's time...it was 'it'....in East Anglia. 15-20 Soul Clubs featured there in its time...and all had a super time. Was it 'euphoric'like perhaps The Mallet...or Wigan was? I doubt it. Was it good compared to what was on offer around the Country at the time? YES...it was worth the travel for folk to come down from Blackburn/Stoke as much as it was for us to go up their way!x Each time has it's moments...and for East Anglia...in the 90's...we provided it....and it was appreciated...on the whole!x Did you come to any of them to have a considered opinion? If so...i;d appreciate your reflection on it!x Easy to rubbish stuff mate...I know...but what was it that made you feel like that?...if you came to any of them in the 90's? As for Chris....Max...both of whom i;ve known since aged 15....yep...they evolved from the Northern scene into the 'modern' scene in the 80's/90's and to date. Tremendous respect they have in that scene too I know and duly earned over the years...XX As for Northern...back in 1990's...Max himself will tell you he was wheeeled out at the occasional doo...but he only played the 'obvious' at the time and wasn't really 'up' on 'new additions' to Northern and the like. There were several others who had been there when Max was in the 70's.....all of them had been 'simmering' since the Mallet and just doing a 'commemorative' do here and there....but no 'consistency' or regular does going off anywhere. I got those 'old school' together....and put the work in to get summink regular going again. They all mucked in....but....many of them were happy turning up...doing their bit....as they had done in the past....but weren't out to go to other gigs or help develop the music and scene....or indeed themselves. So....I began working with those who did....as well. Len..Shifty...Sean....Kev Fev....all either 'new kids' or 'Rare' Soul specialists....none of which we had in Cambridge of the dedication or commitment these lads and I were willing to put in! So....on that basis Gordon...your not wrong I suppose. What we achieved...hadn't gone before. Some Mallet folk stopped coming when Shifty DJ'd. Said Betty O'Brien was bo**ox...not Norvern....and went home chewing their heads off in disgust...and never returned telling folk I din't know wot Norvern wos!!!!!! 1994. What can I do about that?!x You can please some....as they say!!x LUV SOOTY X Sikirby asks.....so are you implying that those of us who went to the Casino and other All nighters were only into Rare Soul, Whilst those who went to the Mecca and other nights were only into Northern soul? What if you went to only All dayers? And is there any Rare Northern Soul ?!!!!!! Hmm the mind boggles !! NOOOOO Si!!!hehe!x My comments are about what I found out and about in East Anglia/and say 50 Mile radius of Cambridge...in the 90's!x As i've said above....most of those who came to St Ives in the end hadn't been to a do for over 10/15 years....had to be reminded how to dance and get over hearing the Snake for the first time in donkeys!!!x There was a 'rare' soul bunch here and there and I visited their venues. Shifty...had 20 or so turning up regular at Southend. Len...had a good 100 turning up for their take on it all....Kings Lynn....100 would turn out for an Oldies night.....20/30 for a 'rare'. Norwich...Soul Nights I promoted that way with locals....100 for a Classic night.....we couldn't get more than 20/30 for a rare doo at the time. So...yes...they were about...but not well supported or being 'exposed'. Within a year or so.....all of them were spinning their Rare and Quality 500...to1000 folk. So..I din;t moan about it or take sides...I just solved the dilemma...generated a demand....and put the folk in front of em. Easy done....as long as you were willing to put the time...mileage and commitment into it....as you time served folk know!x I was. I will again...and as said....it'll be easier now as that 'divide' is a lot closer and more knowledge spread among more folk than what we had in the 90's. I certainly would be anticipating 2000 at a venue like St Ives with a 60/40 mix of Northern/Rare being spun...no probs...to kick off with these days!x In 1993...when i started....you;d be lucky to have 2 or 3 records away throughout the night that would have been considered 'rare'...obscure....'new' as such....before discontent would have surrounded the room!! Based on todays potential...I consider all of us capable of pooling that knowledge and providing a positive environment for new folk to feel 'obligated' to take part!!! The 'i's have it so to speak...these days!x Exciting eh?!x

So have I Chalky!x How can I be more succinct....? When I arrived as such 1993...there was a definite 'split' occurring...'oldies/newies'. Around my local patch....you were 1...or t'other...I figured! ME...I luv'd hearing all.....end of! But it weren't that approach out there. As a Promoter and DJ...I had to deal with that reality. My solutions intitially....to offer 2 seperate themed events....which worked...for that interim. The 'old school newbies'....learnt new tunes over the time....and ALL 'united' eventually with St Ives at it's end 97/8/9 having the best of all genres being played....including Len's midtempo....!!!x It was a 'business' reality as such Chalky that I faced....and it is all I can report. But....this time round??? There are more 'educated' folk around on the wider spectrum of rare records and music out there than there was in 1993/4/5....so 'we' won;t be alone in bringing these newbies along.....it'll be easy this time....I reckon!x LUV SOOTY X EDIT....i;ve said it before....and i'll say it again....Sean Chapman came through my 'system'!! He lapped up the Oldies upon his return in '93 ish after a long sabbatical. He bought them all...I put him on his first DJ spot at one of my does and he played one after the other CLASSIC OLDIES...and rocked the joint!! Like me...he even jumped onto the dance floor whilst his tunes were spinning....I remember it well!!x But....within 10 years....he 'progressed' to where I read these days he is considered 'cutting edge' by some....!x It worked....I rest my case!!x @@ ~

..hehe!!x Right...I can say for definite that when this new surge of folk came thru East Anglia 93+...they wanted their classic oldies. I couldn't sell them the idea of the 'Rare' night.....or 100 Club....for aaaages...a year or so. Those who were dedicated to this 'new wave' of soul...which hadn't appeared at Wigan or owt....then that contingency FORCED me in essence to put on a seperate 'rare' doo just for them...and the DJ's came...they danced to it all...and were happy! They came to the Soul Night 11-12pm for the mini bus to the 100club!!! It was a definite division for a while....newbies getting bedded in....old school wanting to move on...and me...in the middle....driving the mini bus....!!x I never went to kip either.....only 3 times down the M6 on way home from Keele/Blackburn but woke up when folk were screaming or trying to grab the wheel as we were veering off or summink....happy days! It's why I took a minibus...it made sure I got home safely....!x My shuttling folk to A/Nighters was 'revolutionary' as such as a standard service attached to me Soul Nights! Folk said they hadn't had that facility consistently as I provided it since the 70's....! It's all I can report or reflect on! But....my experience and approach/result as a promoter may be different to what was or had gone before. I do things different...or like too...and it worked! It had to be....most of the nights I went to A/N wise apart from the 100club and Keele back in 93...were dying or dead...and Soul nights were a handbag/classic affair really that i visited...on the whole. That changed with education and excitement through the 90's...I saw it happen around the Nation as I travelled...talked with folk and recky'd the craic wherever I went. Now...I see that tsunami of interest has gone back out to sea leaving the hard core flappin' on the beach for a while.....but a HUUUUGE wave has just washed over them all again......and folk flappin everywhere but resonating to different beats...! It'll settle....and all will be well...!!!hehe!!x Been there...done it!!x Get excited...I am...!x See you at the 100Club Chalky for a belated Birthday hug!x Good to catch up too...I reckon....hard core u is....and i'm sorry i missed some of your trips back in the days....before mine!!x Respects mate...X @@ ~ LUV SOOTY X

But 'classic' Soul Night folk...would go to our 'general' All Nighter at St Ives...'oldies/classics' job....but wouldn't go to the 'rare' nights...or the 100 club!!! ...with me so far...?!hehe!x Now...what I did is....coincide my Classic Soul Night in Cambridge...with the 100 Club A/N....and fill me bus with 'Rare' Soulies...who came to the S/N...erm...just to get on the bus...init. Are "hand Baggers" Taking Over This Scene?
Sooty replied to Daz Watson's topic in All About the SOUL
...in the 90's....yeah I know....but it still will work today......it was the first big 'surge' of interest from new commers and 'old school' who hadn't been to a doo since the late 70's. They came in droves to Soul Nights as a 'buzz' was going around those venues. My observations were this.....these new folk didn't come for 'music'....nope...they were looking for a Social life. Now...some promoters left them to their interpretation and lack of knowledge on the subject. But...some....myself included....embraced these folk via Soul Nights and 'educated' them whilst entertaining them....by giving Tapes away with 'other' tunes on there that the Promoter/DJ's would like them to listen too and get to like! IT WORKED!!! Giving tapes out every function back in those days was expensive...and hard work/time consuming! I used to copy 100 at a time.....I remember it well....yet it was worth it. I can name many Soulies and a few current DJ's who got 're-plugged in' to the scene...via such methods. If I was promoting today....with technology cheap as chips and simply done....I wouldn't dream of putting a function on without supplying a perhaps 30p 'CD'...to go with the entrance fee...for all in attendance! I remember playing 2 or 3 tunes for say 2 monthly nights with not much reaction.....but after the Anniversary tape had gone out...the next Month...EVERYONE was dancing...AND Singing....cos they knew it!x Simple stuff to 'tie' folk in....and for £30.....u can 'buy' ureself a following....I did!!....oh add to it the 30/40 hours duplicating....photocopying the sleeve after making it with letraset.....etc etc...I earnt that following....I reckon...!!x @@ ~ LUV SOOTY X -

Put it on VHS...1000 copy's went out via Kev/Richard....and 10 years later i've decided to put it out there for 'the masses' who perhaps never knew it existed!x The topics discussed in the DVD are stuff you'll find everyday in here.....'timeless' product....and done with no script or 'agenda'....just me...wanting to capture for meself....'the scene'...!x LUV SOOTY X I have been asked to add to the post above to Brav.....the profits of the DVD are going to 3 Football Fan Trusts of local to me Non-League Clubs. I have relationships with all and any monies they get I will ensure is used for 'kids' stuff at all 3 clubs. The proceeds from the Vinyl will go to Charity Soul....an organisation set up within the Soul Scene of which I have taken a keen interest in. At present it is focusing on funding Stem Cell research for Cancer. I have got involved happily and the concept is being taken to a new level and will become a National phenomenon and encompasses all Soulies/Promoters and DJ's who want to get involved. So...the 'Youth'...cancer research...and the scene....will benefit from our product. Pete will make dosh with the Commercial world...and is 'away' again as he was in the 90's....super!x Me....never ever have I wanted to make money outta this scene...or its folk. Never have....and i'm consistent with that ethos today.....X Edit.....Pete read this and said 'stick it out theeeeeere'.....! Music.....good music....needs to be shared....here's our approach and opinion on that and our intro to the album....!x 3 Northern based tracks are on the DVD and this as a 'bonus'.....and as the title of the thread is about R n B....I think this may juuuust scrape that genre.....definately tappable......and the words.....well.....Simon Cowell's email said it all when we sent him it....'Bang on!'....as he smoked another fag.......sigh....... @@ ~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsxQmZp5dsk

Investing/supporting/promoting the 'youth' has been a part of me life always Brav!x As a kid I always confronted bully's of those vulnerable at the 27 schools I went too.....stepped in when folk were intimidating others....and brought to account all kinds of wrong things done against 'youth' including assist over 400 receive compensation for abuse of all kinds done to them whilst in the care of Social Services as kids around the land........so to help them musically is a joy....and for me...a welcome relief to be honest!x However.....this particular singer....as with all out tracks....will be 'replaced' by the Commercial world with an established 'star' once in the Public domain. That discussion has already taken place and it is where we secured the right to use the tunes with original singers as a 'rare' version...and are putting the 4 Northern influenced tracks on the forthcoming DVD for 'free' to pay our respects to you folk who inspired us in the first place!x We are having 500 ONLY Demo's/Samples of each double A vinyl single with 2 tracks on each manufactured too...the 'originals'.....and sticking to me...underdog....'underground' roots and philosophy as such!x Hence the delay in the 'package' arriving!!x No problem....soon be Xmas!!!!x @@ ~ LUV SOOTY X

He used to sing a song which used the tune whilst we flicked players him Chelsea me Leeds......and was so pleased to find the tune in the groove when I got this 78 home!!!
