Rarest Ric-Tic Of Them All What`s It Worth

Really don't know, but next time I'm over there I'll ask. Trouble is the number of people that were around back then, deminishes ever year. -
Rarest Ric-Tic Of Them All What`s It Worth
Dave Thorley replied to georgeblackwell's topic in Look At Your Box
Ed would do an initial run, which was always fairly large, then re-press based on demand. Generally Detroit label bosses were hooked up around the country, because of great promo guys like Casablanca, Ernest Kelly etc, so would often do local pressing deals if a record took off in different parts of the country, as Ric Tic did. As for Ed Wingate, he always had great cash flow, as he ran the major part of 'The Numbers' business on the West Side of Detroit, so cash was never a problem. Clearly why there was lots of over stock in the 70's was not that they sold badly, but the reverse. They sold so well that they kept on doing re-pressing runs, on the last run demand would slow and they would be left with the odd 5-8 thousand left. But by comparison with the number they sold, this would have been small fry. Plus they were happy to keep over stock as labels, like Ric Tic would have a good secondary market, selling to Jukebox operators and cut out sellers, that would buy wholesale and bundle up in packs of 10 & 20 to sell in petrol stations, hardware store and variety stores. -
Rarest Ric-Tic Of Them All What`s It Worth
Dave Thorley replied to georgeblackwell's topic in Look At Your Box
Ric Tic ran a fairly tight ship. I think one reason for some of the white demo's not being so easy to find, is that they got them out the door. So there where never piles of them lying around when collectors and dealers started going through over stock in the 70's, most went out to DJ's, promo guys etc. The promo guy at Ric Tic was a legend in Detroit, James 'Casablanca' Stanford, he work like a trojan to get product out the door and get promo's into the hands of people that would work it. He was a real nice guy, but a real hustler, everyone in the business in the mid west knew him. When Ric Tic closed it's doors he grabbed what was left of over stock, about 10,000 45 across all the titles. He had these at his home for many years, and was happy for collectors to rifle through them. When I went through them I asked him where are all the demos, he said 'there weren't many, as we got them out the door'. Casablanca passed away in 2005. -
Jack Montgomery - Dearly Beloved, What Studio ?
Dave Thorley replied to Dave Thorley's topic in Look At Your Box
Cheers Guys, as you say Robb, Musicians worked where ever the money was. Not going to lose sleep over it, but just wondered if anyone knew. Cheers Dave -
Just heard this on Jerry Hipkiss's morning show and it struck me how much it sounds like a Ric Tic sound, strings, guitar playing on the drum beat. Now I know it's Don Mancha, Dennis Coffee and Mike Theodore, which means could have been recorded at United Sound, but it just has that Ed Wingate studio sound. Any one know ????

" Banished Northern " - New Podcast - Guilty Pleasures Time
Dave Thorley replied to Pete S's topic in All About the SOUL
PS, slightly off topic. But if people go out expecting to be disappointed, then the end result is they normal are. Those that go out with a positive mind set, find and hear stuff that normally makes the night enjoyable. Those that go out wanting only to hear what they want to hear, are looking for utopia and as we all know that doesn't exist. -

Yes to much of that. People that shout loud on here are often never to be seen out or even supporting the type of music they say they want to hear. Also as I said, there are enough different venues and DJ's (boy are there a lot of DJ's nowdays) that most types of oldies get played somewhere. -

Pete understand what your saying, but you do come from a view point of someone that goes out very little. I'm saying that many of the old slightly left field things do get played and have not be forgotten. If your wish is to hear good quality oldies or the left field oddity , but not the same old top 100 stuff there are many places doing that every week. There are so many venues now, that what ever your wish or style, there somewhere doing it. Near here there is even a real U.S. Low Rider style event started. -

The Thornton Sisters - I Keep Forgetting - Cuppy
Dave Thorley replied to Soulfuljules's topic in Look At Your Box
I had the same response from her when I posted it on Youtube a few years ago. If she says she didn't record it then I tend to believe her. But there is always the other possibility, that it was the sisters recording, but they didn't realise it had been released at the time, never got paid and now days they are just very pissed off with the level of interest in it. The murky world of 60's soul recordings. !!!! -
Questions, Always Questions.....detroit Related?
Dave Thorley replied to Wilxy's topic in Look At Your Box
When I spoke with the When I meet the guys in Memphis, they told me that they went to American Group in Memphis after being introduced by Bobby Womack. Bobby was working there at the time and had heard about their mis-adventure in Detroit. -
