Subway Riders - Will The Real B Side Please Stand Up
Dave Thorley posted a topic in Look At Your Box
Subway Riders - Adam/After the session - Moon Shot I always thought B side ' After the session' was an instrumental of 'Moonlight, Music And You', which some of the 45's indeed do play. But the other day I sold one and the customer sent it back saying it was a mis-press that plays something else other than M M & Y and this was not the first time he had bought one of these. So when I got it back I listened to the other track on the pressing.and listening to the crazy vocal/chat, they seem to be talking about the end of the session etc, ie 'After the session'. So does this mean that the 'Moonlight, music & you' instrumental is infact the mis-pressing ?????? Anyone know the story....... -

'the frail man, that was a big man' Like everyone that 'The Force Of Nature' that was Michael Cruise touched. I sit here with a heavy heart this morning, even when you know it's coming, it's still hard. His humour, company and great love of soul music, always made him a joy to be with, even though his machine gun delivery would take a few moments to tune into, (Smile), and now I am smiling, he always had the ability to make you smile................

What The History Behind Ramsey And Company On The Soul Scene
Dave Thorley replied to Fossev's topic in Look At Your Box
They were the house band for Peg Leg Bates's country club in the Catskill's, New York state. Most of the copies were sold to the clientele who came to the club, hense it never turning up in any quantity. Was re-issued in 2006 on the mighty fine Lotusland label -

It's more simple than that. It just didn't sell, Revilot would have done a fairly decent first pressing run on all their releases. In the 70's a fair few were found in different warehouses in Detroit. At the time was seen as to slow for the UK scene and many of these went to Japan. As for his Jaber stuff, Jackey told me that most saw little more than 1000-2000 pressing runs, which is pretty small. The US was only pressed at 500, as it totally bombed, and they got no orders from the usual distributors, to justify any more being pressed. Similar situation with Karen Striblin and his own 'Lover come back'. If I remember the conversation correctly, the ones that did see bigger pressing runs, were Mighty Elegants, his rendition of 'Hold on'
-
I think some of it as well was down to Jackey. He recorded his 60's stuff, but was never one for doing that many live appearances which always help to sell your records locally. He then moved himself and all the band down to Georgia in the late 60's and started all over again with John R in Nashville. He seemed to want to make a fresh start, and leave his Detroit days behind him. Even later he found god, became a minister and left his musical past totally behind. On the occasions I met him, he really didn't want to talk about his music career that much, although he was always fun to be with. A really nice guy and a sad loss.......

I'm not trying to get into a fight, but pricing's has to be about what the market is willing to pay or as we used to get hammered into us when I worked in sales 'A price that both the seller and buyer are happy with'. The number of times I have posted things and someone puts a comment, 'Half the price of the price guides' or 'Well below market prices'. Really, most printed price guides are compiled at least 6 months before they are on sale, in this current market, that can mean they are as much as 50% out by the time they hit the market. I price all records by comparing other peoples prices and auction closing prices, time consuming yes, but I do sell a lot of records, so it must work to a greater extent. Do I get it wrong, yes sometimes, both to high or to cheap, but you have to take a big picture view John Anderson gave me some great advice some years ago. "Price your records at a profitable level that you are happy with and that is attractive to buyers. It's not about trying to look clever with lots of high ticket records on your site or list, it's about having empty shelves. If you see a record you sold last week, sell the next for more money, think nothing of it, just do what you do well and go and buy some more records and do it all over again."
-
It will sell on Ebay, if you put it up with a low start bid ie $1.00 and then it will reach what people think it's worth. But this may not be what you think it's worth, but that's the whole point of an auction, market forces. If you really want to sell stuff, you just have to take personnel attachment or like out of it, but this is hard for all of us. Set sale your pricing, then on here or Facebook in selling groups, again if you price it right it will sell.

You all may find this interesting reading, from the excellent Sir Shambling's web site. This tells us that Cletus & Bernard are one in the same................ Cletus Marland Cletus Marland came from Pittsburgh, PA and cut his first records around 1960/1 for local record man Odell Bailey. The rare Bevmar release has a decent doo wop styled ballad in “Be My Love” and the 45 leased out to New York’s Roulette — which sounds like it was cut at the same session — has the similarly styled “I’ll Take Care Of You”. But for his later, and better music, he was in the charge of Detroit producer Ernest Kelley, who cut him in the Big Apple. The first tracks released from these sessions coupled the Northern “Every Now And Then” with the super downbeat Keep On A Loving which features some nice chord changes and an enthusiastic female chorus. Kelley didn’t release other songs from the 1965 sessions until the 80s when he reactivated his Terry label for the pleasantly tuneful “You’re Gonna Miss Me” with the fine deep ballad Yesterday on which Marland undoubtedly gives his very best vocal performance. The girl group are a little further down in the mix on this one and the horns more prominent which helps. Like almost all of his tracks this one was written by Pittsburgh writer Bernie Dupree — a special nod of thanks to him. And until Grapevine 2000 released their “Kelley’s Soul Heroes” CD that was thought to be all of Marland’s recordings. But there was one ace up his sleeve, the superb I Wish That You Were Here which is a version of Kip Anderson’s magical “A Letter From My Darling”. Now this track was released in 1968 so either Marland had another session with Kelley after this date or he cut the first version of this classic ballad. In any case Marland is excellent here, more gritty and soulful than on other tracks, and the band give him high class support. Maybe not quite up to the emotional depth that Anderson achieved but pretty close. Cletus Marland apparently moved to the West Coast where he is reported to have passed on. UPDATE ~ Dave Turner writes to point out that the Bernard Dupree 45 on Granger ("You're Gonna Miss Me") is the same as the Cletus Marland issue. The flip "Yesterday" is the same song but a slighly different mix. This very interesting bit of info prompts the thought that as Granger was a West Coast label, and that is where Marland is reported to have ended up, could he and Dupree be one and the same person? Thanks to Dave for the excellent spot. FURTHER UPDATE ~ I can now confirm that Bernard Dupree is indeed the same guy as Cletus Marland. I have also updated the discography to show the Wink 45 second issue of Marland's first 45. See link for further reading https://www.sirshambling.com/artists_2012/M/cletus_marland/index.php
