  2. Last nite Ali & John took Malayka, Che and I out as a treat to see Ola Onabule. As you do on these occassions, we sort of said OK why not, not really knowing what we were going to hear or see. Ola is a singer from London, some of you may remember him from the early 90's when his first release made some waves on the modern soul scene 'You'd better believe', always did well in the modern room at Bretby when I was running it back then . Well to say we were blown away would be an understatement, I went with Malayka and my son Che, so with my self included a wide range in age to keep happy. He did this in spades, even with a fairly poorly promoted event, in the theatre of a private school, in Cheltenham. Maybe about 65 people in the house or as Ola said at one stage "80 people to keep my ego happy", but he had them on their feet rockin' and clapping. He did a 2 hour set backed by a very tight band, that complimented his style so well. You can hear the influence of one of his hero's, Frank Beverly in his vocals, but his range is much more than that, old school soul singer, jazz interrpupter, a class comtemporary act. Che had come a little under sufference, a big hip hop fan, but as we walk he turned to me and said "now that was really good dad". Some of you may well already know him, some of you may not, but have listen to a great comtemporary soul singer. I will put up his first, release and a few tracks from his new album, to follow. If you see he is on locally, see him His new album-buy it Promotors looking for a modern act for a venue or weekender book him Dave

  6. Most records so far are from what you might call his 'Golden period', but earlier Lou Ragland-I travel alone-Mala. I remember going to Wigan with my old mate Gabby. For a couple of weeks we pestered him to play it, as we knew he had played it at The Va Va's. He said he was not sure if it would go down. But by the third week he gave in and played it, nearly clearerd the floor, but bless him, he did stick with and after a few weeks it was a much loved tune. Top dj, and later to become a great mate About the same time, I was running one of my first big events, Stroud Sub Rooms along with Richard Ballinger, used to get about 500 in for this soul night. I asked Richard if he would come along as a guest, back then we hardly knew each other, but he said yes. I met him in a pub not far from the M5, bugger me he said, when I said yes I did know it was this far, it's taken me 4 hours to get here. When he took to the decks he played his latest big cover up, blew everyone away 'Norman Johnson & The Showmen-Put that woman down' Sound file for either anyone please
  7. Now days, there are a few that I would call special, each of them were there for me a few years back, when things got very black and it's fair to say without them I would not be hear now. Funny but when the chips were down it was the soul scene that pulled me through. Very personal but; Ali & John, Richard & Judith, Ady & Carol, Marc & Dawn, Gary Fields, Pete & Karen, Colin C, Leon & Gavin, love you lots. But there are many more of you on here that I can never say thank you enough to. So you can't complain about my djing any more, it's your fualt i'm still here Love you all But most of all Malayka, a new life Dave
  8. A great friend, hey Lee. Still miss him even after all these years, great taste in music. It was Gabby who so supportive when I used to play tracks like George Benson-World is a ghetto at Yate. Later in life he used to send me great Jump Jazz tapes in the post that always made me smile. Truely a life cut short
  9. All this negative talk makes me think it's gonna be a blood bath, let the bidding start

  15. On this point we agree Pete. Whats wrong with a little spat in public from time to time. Nothing offensive was said, just the views of two passionate people. Freedom of speech and all that.
  16. OK, open the Thread again, please
  17. Just open the tread again
  18. Then don't talk about people as THEY, who are THEY. Some alien race, that know nothing about soul music
  19. Peter, Peter You started your post in such a divisive way, THEY, NORTHERN SOUL. As if much of the stuff on other treads isn't northern soul cuz you say so. I do start treads, but I never tell people what they can or can't do. The interesting thing is always to see how other people choose to respond, without restriction. Lighten up Pete, you mention no modern soul ,so by fact where promting a debate, by being so devisive. Why can't we have a bit of fun with you. Open the post again there was some good stuff there Dave
  20. Yes, met the lead singer, nice guy but didn't have any copies himself
  21. Sorry I've caused some confusion. The group out of Detroit I know nothing about is the Bright Stars, the sound clip before the one you are interested in. This is by Andrew Smith, he was a session drummer at Motown in the 60's. The story goes that he cut a 5 track demo, that I have. He took it along to Berry, as he wanted the chance to release a record, but in short Berry told him he was a session drummer. So the disc lay with the producer, until he sold it to me about 10 years ago. Hope that helps
  22. Unfortunatly, No it's a un-released studio disc
  23. Wish I knew who he is, The guy I got them off couldn't remember any of the group
  24. Thanks, the studio disc's came out of a little find in Detroit
