  1. Sadly I have to agree John, been looking for one of these for a few years.
  2. Look, everyone stop talking about this record, at least until I get one
  3. In the end not sure enough people care, lost £1000's on that over the time we ran it. Not moaning in the slightest, those that came had a great time and some stunning music got played, what more can you ask for. Dave
  4. All these question, so what you planning
  5. P.S. they moan about the door price then spend £30-£50 at the bar, which goes in the pocket of the non-soul fan club owner, not that of the soul fan promoter.
  6. Hi Chalky Big dance events, provide alot for the money. Great lighting, back projection screens etc, cool clubs, great sound systems and top flight dj's. But they also only have one, two or three dj's on in a night. So you could say they are even better value for money than a soul event. Where as we run events with a dj every hour, poor venues often, poor sound system and little else cuz we all say it's the music that counts!!!!. You will know cuz we've talked about this before, that I do have a issue with many soul events where people put a table across the door way, a poor system at the other end of a village hall, hope that the dj's do a good job and take money. No real attempt to entertain, concider the paying public, seating facilites, dance floor, records bar if needed, in general poor promotion. Trouble is that as that has now become the standard, it's hard to change or charge accordingly. When we ran Soulshakers in Solihull we spent a fair bit trying to dress the place, slideshows on the walls etc and a great sound system in both rooms. The DJ line up was almost as good and exspensive as an allniter, but people put no value on any of this. People arrived at the door and said it only cost £5 down the road at the local soul nite why should we pay more. If you want to charge more you have to be seen to give more. But it's not likly to happen, why? Comes back to the current problem of too many venues, all struggling to get in a few people. So most promoters are trying to spend as little money as possible, cheap little sound system, no other dressing of the venue, no door staff if they can get away with it, mates DJing and one name guest. It has to come from the customers, if they start to demand more then people will have to provide more or stop promoting. Silly thing is that young people that attend these higher priced dance events often have less disposible cash, than the majority of the middle aged (Familys left home soul fans). Yet it is the better off soul fan who won't pay a little more to see the soul music they claim to passionatly love, prosper. But you are right, soul events are too cheap on the door.
  7. Hi Mark When I first heard it I was dancing away thinking nice Philly style instrumental, what a suprise when the vocals came in half way through, and on the 7" I mean half way through

  10. I was very out bid on this, great tune. Bit of a long intro though
  11. I've been told by many in Detroit, that the Detroit Symphony Orchestra-string section or some at least, moonlighted on many sessions in the city. Also kids from Northwest Tech and Cass Tech worked on some sessions.

  13. Ian at Yate, with The Wid, Tony and Rowland
  14. Think some of the value thing is based on the same measurements as used on any other non-U.S. release, ie not the counrty of origin of recording. Simply as that!!!. Some are even harder to find than the U.S. release, infact many releases world wide were pressed on tiny pressing runs compared with the U.S., but in the main are valued less. There will always be the exception people can point to, but most people want the first U.S. release. I love odd ball releases, one of my prizes is The Sweethearts-Beauty's only skin deep on Philipino Miro.
  15. Spoken to him a fair bit of late, he is blown away by the great comments on here, really has raised his spirit. Now all we have to do is get to come and and dj somewhere!!!!!!!!!!!
  16. Oh well must have been something I eat
  17. Reading the sleeve notes, I think this is more likely to been sent to record producers and film companies to promote the catalog, bit like the Jobete set of albums
  18. When it arrives I'll put a few sound clips
  19. Well as there say 'Quality always comes through'
  20. Hi Steve Went to a few there, long drive from Gloucester in them days. If I'm not mistaken had a few different promoters, went to one mid 70's ish run by John Kojac Harvey-Inter-City Soul Club, with one Ian 'Frank' Dewhurst on the wheels of steel. Also wasn't the venue for the 'Good Old Days' music hall thing next door, or did I just imagine that!!!!!!!
  21. Didn't you once have a bad accident with a Carstairs
  22. I've think I've told this story on here before. Came out of Top Of The World one morning, with my good mates Gary 'Slaphead' Colbourn and Dave 'His Imperial Dimness'. Put my 45 and lp case on pavement and said "I'll get the car, you stay with the records", Dim says "I don't want to be responsible for anything". Jumped in car, drove round frount of the club, shouted "throw the records in the boot and jump in". Boot gets shut everyone loaded off we head to Stoke for an all dayer at the Roller Rink. Get breakfast on way and generally mess around until midday, get to club, open boot. One 45 box, no lp case, "where the fcuk is my lp case", Dim looks messy and says "well I told you I was a mess, I think there still on the pavement in Stafford". Drove back to Stafford, no box, never saw it or any of the records again. What was in the box ? The first copy of Flowers-For real- on a 10" acetate 10" acetate, version 3 alternate Jimmy Soul Clark-Sweet darling Jobete-Yesterday-Today-Tomorrow lp First Copy of Jesse Henderson-I did it again Not a good day in Thorleyland
  23. I don't think that the majority on the dancefloor have ever cared Rod, just the chin scratchers. Also like the Kent idea
  24. Bloody hell Ken, if you do all that, one of your intros would be even longer than Guy's.
  25. Hi Ian I'm not saying can't, I know it was a long reply to yours. I think the vinyl thing is a special part of what makes our scene. But not the be all and end all. I've played some un-released 60's stuff on CDR, so that they can be heard and can't be bothered to get them cut to a carver. But then arrive at some venues and they don't have a CD deck. I've even taken an Ipod to a modern event, jacked in and played some MP3 only soulful house tracks. I think long term, mixed formate djing is a reality, but I find it hard to let my vinyl habit go. In fact one of the points I was trying to make, was the vinyl original only or hang the dj, is stifling the scene and not even in line with the earlier spirit of the scene, that I first knew and loved. There should be some flexibilty so the best tracks can be played and heard and if that means CDR or MP3 then so be it. You and I will remember the the outrage in some quarters when 12" first arrived, 'this is the devils work', but in reality all they were was another format. I do think that some object cuz they love the scene passionatly as it once was, which is fine. Some object, cuz they can't get their heads round the technology, well go learn. Others object cuz they have built their reputation as a checkbook dj and see technology as their nemosis, good. In the end we want a healthy, evolving scene, with great dj's playing the best music, don't we ? This may mean some change and evolution. If you fancy The Yate do, we would love to see you, but it will be vinyl only night, that was then, this is now.
