  3. Funny how times change, back in the mists of time it was common place to hear indemand tunes played more than once. I can remember people coming and saying things along the lines of "I know you played it in your last set but please play @*&*@ again". Real indemand tunes at Wigan, Yate or The Ritz could often be played twice and people loved it. Now playing tunes twice in an hour is a bit much, I know. But there again, can remember some tunes that Guy was really behind being played at the beginning and end of his set, peeps couldn't get enough of them. I think the problem comes when the tunes are already somewhat played out or tired oldies. But as I said times change.
  4. Spoke to Al a couple of years ago, he told me that 'Tiki' was his old block name when he was a kid round Detroit.
  5. For you nice evening users
  6. Yes as you say alot of nothing. It's not that hard to make a pile of poo look good, just drop the odd reasonable record here and there. Some may remember, when Ian L. was trying to sell his records about 4/5 years ago, 1000 of records that were almost unsellable, condition was fine, just titles that were never going to be fashionable. But just every now and then would pop up something reasonable, but the trouble was that the spacing of the good records was just too systematic. Nothing felt natural or ramdom. Also the good records amounted to, in actual fact the same five titles he must have had a bit of quantity on.
  7. Hi Tony I still call in on the Stubbs family from time to time. Although Joe is now dead and Levi is very ill, the daughters are still recording now and again, a really nice family.
  8. Thanks to everyone for so much action and feed back so soon. Dave & Malayka

  12. Hi All I know this is not the sales forum, but we really would like you feed back. We have a new web site for Top Dog Records. www.topdogrecords.co.uk We've tried to keep it simple-Is that what you look for ? Got as many sound files as we can-Do you find them useful ? We have a events section we would like to fill, or are these redundant, due to sites like this ? Will be putting up some old Manifesto articals-What would you find interesting ? General comments on our site welcome, plus sites you find good or bad in general would be helpful Dave & Malayka
  13. Hi All New Web Site, stuffed full of nice things. www.topdogrecords.co.uk If you like it mail to a friend. As this is a new site there maybe the odd bug, but we have been testing it for a week and seems to run well. Big thanks to Max Schmitt in Berlin who put it together for us. Searching We have tried to keep it simple, so along the top you can choose medium, 45, LP etc and then click on the music genre you want to look at. Each medium has it's own New arrivals section. There is also a site search engine so you can look for individual artists across all medium. Some sections will be a bit light on title, but these will be filled soon. Sound Files We have nice sound file sortware, so you can get feel for the tracks you don't know. Still uploading more every day, bit of a never ending task. Ordering Just use the shopping basket, we only take paypal, checks and cash at mo, but Visa should be on line soon. Have fun, we would love to have your feedback Dave & Malayka

  16. Just been out bid on ebay, went for $43, fell asleep and missed the close
  17. Saw him last weekend in Barcelona, he was outstanding. I'm not one for live group much of the time, but he had the crowd in the palm of his hand. Introduced his tunes and spoke to the crowd in latin, had a venue of 700+, mainly 20 somethings boogieing their socks off all night long. Why doesn't someone bring him over to the UK?, he would be a great act for a weekender alittle different maybe, but from what I saw better than many of the acts I've seen at Weekenders. Outstanding Dave
  18. Infact her first couple of singles had that info on the 45's
  19. Many of the 60's group harmony acts would have appearded on talent show, some big some small. It was a way to get noticed and for label owners and talent scouts to find new group. In some cases it was just a more formilised version of the street corner vocal face offs that would happen in some neighbourhoods, (see the Five Heartbeats film) I remember many years ago talking to Ivy Jo Hunter in Detroit about his early career. He said it was after a local talent show with his first group, a bunch of school friends that he first meet Ed Wingate, his group came second. Ed had put up some of the prize money and was on the outlook for new talent. Other people in Detroit have told me that there was a talent show somewhere in the city nearly every month in the mis 60's. This was replecated in many major cities across the states, so in a long winded response, most 60's artists would have gone through one or two talent shows on route to greater or lesser fame. Equally I have spoken to several artists that have told me how they won several local talent show, but still never got the real big break. Although not a talent show, Motown in the early days would hold weekly open session for young talent to come in to show off their skills. Later when they became more sucessful this moved out to monthly and was something they did right up until they left the City for L.A., in the 70's. A fair few of Motowns rosta came in via this route.
  20. I did, Richard Searling had told me about it. In fact I think it was one of his then, radio plays.
