  1. Hi Rob Think it a nice idea. I know you will have already thought through the costings side of it, just a thought. Why not do one small gig in the area you mentioned and one a day before or later in greater london or the south east to help with the costs, also may give more people the oppertunity to see the artists. Dave

  10. Early Soul-O-Sonic is a New York label, owned by Earnest Kelly before he moved to work for Motown in Detroit. Ernie started his career in New York working in promotions at Atlantic as well as writing and producing his own material. He used the label name again later for a 70's Carol Anderson release 'One mans woman', which is a Detroit release.
  11. Just made a few changes to the above and added a missing track
  12. Big thanks to all those that listened in, especially, Sean, Brian, Ian and the many others that emailed while the show was on. We had a great time and hope to be back again. Thanks Mick for inviting us. Dave & Malayka
  13. That would explane why several copies have turned up in Detroit
  14. Hi Carl Some of the below are not Detroit, but other Michigan labels and some are 70's onwards. A fair few Michigan labels get credited to Detroit, but had little connection. Marked a few examples.
  15. It took a long time to find, but the owner did live in Detroit, now dead. He just seemed to work very much on his own, didn't use Detroit artists or musicians on his recordings. Some things were recorded in Chicago, maybe Detroit as well, but non of the major studios remember him. Still trying to track more info down, might find out more on my next trip.
  16. Here a stab at it. Wigan say 2000 on a good nite, on the same nite Cleethorpes or St Ives about another 600/700, Mecca say 400, but 200 go on to Wigan (hope your following this), on the sunday Whitchurch, Powerhouse or The Ritz alldayer gets in 800, but again some have been out last night so discount down by 50% (400). Other alldayers/small events etc 1000 in total. Some people only ever went to local events mid-week and never allniters/alldayers, so add another 1000 across the counrty (you may not call them hard core fans but they did go). So that gives a total of about 5000 regulars most weeks. So that gives you a weekly average, but then what multiple do you add to cover those that didn't go every week, but say once a month and may not be covered by above. So thats 'Northern' Fans, if your talking about soul fans more generally you have to add in the London and southern scene, early Canvey Island etc which could add as many again going out every week to hear soul music.
  17. Not a good week in Detroit
  18. Hi John Does this have Distributed by ATCO Record Sales Co under artist name???? Like the one below Thanks Dave
  19. Shit, been a bad year with the loss of so many great Detroit men. In fact over the last couple, some of the greatest have gone. Mike Terry, Richard Wylie, Norman Whitfield, Levi Stubbs, Joe Hunter
  20. Hi Alan It was always great fun coming up to DJ there and at the couple of alldayers around the same time. Love my trips to Scotland and it's still the same these days on the occasional visit to Aberdeen. I still have this great image in my head, when Guy, Keb and few others got this little peddle car out of the playschool stuff and put my daughter, Roxanne in it and off she shot out the door down the hall, turning right and across the dance floor. Some very messy heads in the room nearly exploded at the sight of this. Many of the guys from there I only see now a couple of times a year, but it like we have never been apart, great friends.
  21. Just a quick bump for those that may have missed this yesterday

  23. Theory; 'Tighen up' comes first, to this they create a dance called the 'funky corners'. Then following the dance craze a bunch of 'corners' tunes appear including the 'Funky 8 corners' which was a fairly common accurance. As a homage to the original tune, they lift part of the rhythm, again common. A well know DJ (Frankie Crocker-New York) sees the craze and along with the record company decide to cash in on the it and you get 'Ton of dynamite'. Again not uncommon to use dj's name on records to help sell them, ie E. Rodney Jones (Chicago)-R&B time. As an aside, it is also very possible that all or some of Willie & The Mighty Magnificients play on 'Ton of dynamite', as they are the main house/studio band at All Platinum at the time.
  24. Also a couple of blues numbers on the label. Seems to be a budget label, i.e. you bring along a finished project and they will put it out for you.
