  1. Success is relative, the fact that they got the tracks recorded at all is sometimes a major achievement and so we celebrate that success. Also the tracks we love, we also celebrate for what we see as their soulful quality, even if their peers of the time didn't see it at the time. Maybe another way of looking at it. Dave
  2. Gary cut loose many years ago, but he still sees a few old mates at Man U. Good news is that he going to DJ at The Stafford Re-Union.
  3. A few hundred turned up in New York a couple of years ago and a guy was selling them on-line and on Ebay. Think most of those have now gone. I've always thought this is a real class record, as It relies so much on his ability to sing due to the sparse backing track. I think it's worth £100 all day and in a few years will probably be worth a fair bith more.
  4. I don't think Gary ever had, Combinations - I'm Gonna Make You Love Me (Kimtone). Unless someones got it on tape, I never heard him play it. Early Stafford it was almost unknown and only a few copies had turned up, don't think it really got that much play until after he had given up djing. But I do think he was the first or one of the first to play Williams & Watson c/u aka Lamont Cranston Band
  5. Hi Guys Dennis has just updated his web site, so nice info in there. www.denniscoffeysite.com Dave
  6. Bettye LaVette, photo credit: Carol Friedman HIGHLIGHTED LINKS Anti- Records Bettye LaVette OPTIONSEmail a Friend Printer Friendly Version Latest News Releases SOURCE: Anti- Records Feb 24, 2010 17:56 ET BETTYE LAVETTE Bridges the Atlantic With New CD 'INTERPRETATIONS: THE BRITISH ROCK SONGBOOK' Out May 25 on Anti- LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - February 24, 2010) - BETTYE LAVETTE brings the British Invasion home to its American R&B roots on her latest CD, "INTERPRETATIONS: THE BRITISH ROCK SONGBOOK," due May 25 on Anti-. While BETTYE's Grammy-nominated 2007 disc "The Scene Of The Crime" went to the source to find triumph over her own anguish, "INTERPRETATIONS" looks to the past this time for inspiration and uncovers common ancestry in seemingly divergent musical paths. Produced by BETTYE, Rob Mathes and Michael Stevens, the album is a 13-song journey through compositions by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd among others, before concluding right where the very idea for "INTERPRETATIONS" started: BETTYE's visceral show-stopping rendition of The Who's "Love Reign O'er Me" from the 2008 Kennedy Center Honors, which appears here as a bonus track. That performance -- which first brought BETTYE together with Stevens (the event's producer) and Mathes (its musical director) -- served notice that BETTYE is no mere singer. As an extraordinary interpreter of song, she doesn't merely mold a piece of music to suit her tastes; she is a conjurer of deep, emotional truths: "Bettye LaVette punched a hole right through her version of Pete Townshend's 'Love Reign O'er Me,' letting all the song's emotion pour out in a way that its creators never conceived," observed the New York Daily News. Townshend himself came up to Bettye after her performance, took her hands into his and said, "You made me weep." Throughout "INTERPRETATIONS," her performances are a revelation not just of raw emotion, but of the inexorable ties between British rock 'n' roll and the American blues and R&B, which when combined, catalyzed popular music. That Lennon, McCartney, and so many others who crossed the Atlantic in their wake, were deeply influenced by American music is no great secret. What BETTYE demonstrates here so convincingly is the degree to which rock 'n' roll and American soul remain bound by bloodlines. The Beatles' pre-psychedelic "Rubber Soul" classic "The Word" takes on an almost religious fervor, while Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed" is transformed from a majestic pop song into a stark, almost desperate expression of devotion. Profound alienation becomes intense longing on Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here," and the wistful naivet of The Moody Blues' "Nights in White Satin" matures into a deep and unshakeable lament. BETTYE inhabits these songs, revitalizes them and exposes the humanity that makes these 13 tracks not just pop songs, but enduring works of art. Such mastery hardly comes as a surprise to at least one legend featured here. Elton John (whose "Talking Old Soldiers" appeared on "The Scene Of The Crime") offers this endorsement of BETTYE's impassioned take on "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me": "Bettye LaVette has always been a wonderful singer -- I have been a huge fan for many years. To my delight and surprise she recorded an amazing version of 'Talking Old Soldiers' -- a song that nobody else has covered -- and made it her own. "Now she has recorded 'Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me' and has done exactly the same -- but this time with a much more familiar song. I am truly touched by her picking these songs and can only hope that this album brings more attention to this incredible artist." The full track listing for "INTERPRETATIONS: THE BRITISH ROCK SONGBOOK" is as follows: The Word (John Lennon/Paul McCartney)No Time To Live (James Capaldi/Stephen Winwood)Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood (Bennie Benjamin/Gloria Caldwell/Sol Marcus)All My Love (John Baldwin/Robert Plant)Isn't It A Pity (George Harrison)Wish You Were Here (David Gilmour/Roger Waters)It Don't Come Easy (Richard Starkey)Maybe I'm Amazed (Paul McCartney)Salt Of The Earth (Michael Jagger/Keith Richards)Nights In White Satin (David Hayward)Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad (Eric Clapton/Bobby Whitlock)Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me (Elton John/Bernard Taupin)Love Reign O'er Me (Peter Townshend) [bONUS TRACK]
  7. By the end of Wigan Richard was already selling some of his 60's things and Gary did have a fair few of them. Richard sold him Bobby Wisdom - Hand writings on the wall and The Lovers - without a doubt, but once he had them for some reason he didn't like them so sold them to me for £150, wish I could buy them for that now. Dave Greet now has the Bobby Wisdom.
  8. Gary never had The Q But he did play Lee Bates - Why don't you write Bobby Valentin - Use It Before You Lose It Ascots - Anytime Soul Blenders - Tightrope
  9. If it is mainly to sell your own collection, then I would put the whole inventry on Gemm instead. That would get you your best results. They can take payments for you and send you consolidated payments into your bank account a few times a month, you are just left with order fullfillment. If it's to run a long term record selling business, then a site is good. But as already has been said, you need to put alot of time into it, if you want people to return time and time again. That means constant new stock, so the site looks fresh. Sounds files for nearly everything, you can never asume that people know a record, even when it seems well know to you. Easy payment method, if buying becomes a hassle for the buyer, then again they will soon stop coming to you. This is not pointed at you, but if it's an ego thing, don't bother a poor site can do you as much harm as a dealer, as good. Often regularly putting items on here can give a good level of sales. I also am happy to give any help you want, and point you in the direction of people that can help you build it and not cost an arm and leg. In the end the sites only as good as the stock on it. Unless you intend creating a site that also provides knowledge, but I would suggest that would take even more time and hard work. Hope that helps. Dave
  10. The first time I went in there i couldn't believe my eyes, thought all my Xmases had come early, until I started going through it. Was clear it had been well picked over. But I did find 3 Kings Of Soul issues, but they were somewhat warped, but still played fine, still have one. There were also some great LP's and 12" there, these seemed to be less picked over. Found lost of original still sealed LP's and copies of Frankie Nevies and Tony Middleton on 12". Last time I was there the place looked like nearly a 1/3rd of the stock had been sold, when compared with my first visit. Over the years got to know Marie and her husband verywell, the stock in the basement came from a distribution company that they owned and the combined stock of several other shops they used to have around the city. At one time there was some good stuff upstairs as well, but unfortunatly they had some guy working for them that went through the stock over a number of years and walked a lot of it out the back door. He was there a few years before they realised what he was doing and sacked him. Dave
  11. Where as most people were playing Jimmy McFarland, Richard had the Marvin Gaye version. At the time he was the only person to have a dub of it. Came from an engineer at Motown, who I believe Rob Marriot's older brother found or maybe Rod Shard. Thats were most of the other un-released Motown tracks that got played late Wigan/Early Stafford came from. I think that was the story, but someone on here may well be able to give more information. Dave
  12. I know it's long closed, but I forgot about this. Sir Joe - If you give up your love/Nobody beats my love - Ru-Jac. In fact possible the rarest record on this great 60's Baltimore label. I'll post the full story to the record with sound clips later. Dave
  13. I see the guy has now added some comments to cover his ass. He knows full well what he's doing. On 22-Feb-10 at 13:18:58 GMT, seller added the following information: I would like to make it clear that I am not claiming that this is a Motown Disc. I just don't know. This is just one possibility. As I have already suggested it could have been labeled by a private collector/DJ , It has also been suggested that it may have been cut by a DJ who didn't have a copy. On 22-Feb-10 at 15:06:43 GMT, seller added the following information: I have been told now that being drilled does not necessarily mean that it was an export and that this could well have been cut in the UK for a DJ. I am no expert so any info is welcome. I've always thought it was an interesting record and would hate to let it go for a couple of quid, then find out it is something special. If you buy this item it is because you find it interesting or think it might be wotrh something, do some research, I am not intending to mislead in any way. So I have sent this question to him. I know we all make mistakes, but this is what makes a mockery of the UK soul scene overseas. "It's no good saying buyer beware, if you sell this at this price you are mugging the buyer. This is a UK cut acetate, with a home made, photo copied and tipex label. If any record company had been involved, this would have a printed label, not photo copied."
  14. Simply a quality record and we've got it at £15 on our site. Like some else said even if their are 1000 copies around the world for sale, one day, little by little they will go and people will still like the record and those that haven't got it will want to buy it. www.topdogrecords.co.uk Dave
  15. Just a few less paced things that prove the point, quality is what counts, not tempo. Sam Dees - Lonley for you baby Soul Brothers Inc - Pyramid Johnny Gilliam - Room full of tears Bill Wright - Man in love
  16. Chicago at it's best, good on Cliff for playing the life out of it, price should never matter when putting together a DJ set, sadly so often it does. Dave
  17. Think this copy went to a DJ with a name beginning with 'B' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  18. The label he has used must be a Four Tops or Lawrence Payton release as it is credited to Lawrence Payton - Producer. But I can't find out which record was ABC 4143
  19. https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HOLLY-ST-JAMES-THATS-NOT-LOVE-NORTHERN-SOUL-Acetate_W0QQitemZ320491002941QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Records?hash=item4a9ec09c3d Must be the seller and a couple of mates bidding it up, no one in their right mind would pay that for a poor knocked up acetate. UK Ebay, don't you just love it.
  20. Just 3 hours to go on some, including the great unknown ' Buddy Rogers & The Three Jays' don't miss out!!!!!
  21. Interesting that he says 10,000 recordings. I'm sure they never put out 10,000 recordings so i wonder what un-release tracks are there, hhhuuummm
