Hi Malc I know I always fight Popcorns corner, but glad you have him in there. When ever you talk to guys around the city, they always refer to Richard as one of the founding members of the Funk Brothers. He was at Motown from it's earliest days, but left in the early sixties after a disagreement with Berry. He later returned to in the seventies for a short stint. I met the lead singer a couple of years ago. He is now the pricipal of a high school in Gary, Indiana. He told me that they also did an LP, but he didn't have a copy and I've ever been able to find it.

Hi Rob Normally I would say that James is fully able to responed to this himself, but having spoken to him, he has many things on his mind at the moment. I undersatnd James's thinking on this one he is a very good financial trader and the best way for James to get himself on a even keel again is to be in a position to trade, so a slug of cash in is trading account helping him to get his head down and trade himself back makes sense. Also they are just peices of wax that can be bought again, his health and security is his main focus at the moment. Dave

Always loved The 8th Ave Band - The Whole thing - Columbia. It does seem to have been a bit of a funk standard and I know I have seen a few different version over the years. But at the moment can only think of two, E Rodney Jones, Big Barney. What other version were there and good/bad ????

'When did get like this' It has always had an element of this, big rooms have always been about common denominator. Wigan, Yate, Cleethorpes, Stafford. At all of these venues you could look at the DJ line up and would know much of what was going to be played if you went regularly. There was never a time when DJ's went on and played one new thing after another. Even Richard in his hayday would play 80 % of his set the same as the week before at Wigan. Also many new things were played in smaller clubs first and then pick up on by other DJ's, so it was and so it always will be. As for the ego thing often it's reversed, well known DJ's will pick up on a thing and play it and then it's the ego of another DJ that is hurt. 'It's not fair, why is everyone talking about this or that record he palyed, I played it 2-10 years ago'. Stop worring about what other DJ's do and make sure that you do the very best you can, that is play good music and entertain the paying public. Lastly 'Punters need to set them free..... Never gonna happen, the majority will always feel more comfortable with what they know, it's human nature. Like Arthur I have been sacked, not asked back to many venues for playing what ever!! and I strongly believe in new things being played. The more records that are played, then the more memories we will have. But it has to be done in balance.

Three Voices, was an attempt to stop all the infighting between promoters and clashing of venues. It brought together Bradford, Parr Hall and Stafford under one banner. It ran for about the last 8 months of Stafford, then when it closed it fell apart fairly quickly. It just seemed like a good idea at the time. It would have been Four Voices, but one other promoter choose not to join in.

Would like to throw this one into the ring. A stunner, but over looked as it close to a stepper, but has all the ingredients. Touches of the 60's, although recorded 73, cool strings and brass, soulful backing singers and nice vocals, it's got the lot. Another one of those it's cheap so overlooked. No you miss understand. Stafford thing is a deffo, it's gonna be a packer despite somes efforts otherwise. Funny thing is, they will be there and shake me by the hand and say what a great night and how they always went. No, i've just about given up trying to promote anything new.....

Nice idea, everyone says good 'wouldn't it be great if....' but as I can testify when you do people don't support it. At the end of the day, to much politics, other promoters doing their best to strangle anything new in case their event is affected. This camp won't support that camp, these dj's won't work with those etc etc. Sorry to be so negative, but it's the sorry state of how things have become. The amount of shite that behind the scenes has come our way with the Stafford thing from other promoters is un-believable. How can you put that on, when you know we always do this or that at that time in the month, it's so un-fair etc, etc. I'm close to giving up. Dave
