  1. Listening again, could be a Memphis recording also, I would say it comes from that triangle that is Muscle Shoals, Jackson, Ms and Memphis. Just my luck someone is now gonna say it's a west coast recording
  2. Theres a thought. Does also remind me of some Malaco recordings from back in the day. The disc came from Tennesse, which wouldn't make it to much of a stretch to be from that studio. I know Denise LaSalle lives there, but don't think it's her.
  3. Can any one help identify this cool 70's southern floater, was thinking maybe someone like Dorothy Moore, but hopefully someone will know. Thanks Dave
  4. Hi All It's been over a year since we did the last, but barn converstion and a bunch of trips to the states, stopped us getting back any sooner. But anyway, gonna record the show tomorrow, big thanks to GFM for the loan of a studio. If anyone has any requests, nows the time. Otherwise, bunch of un-released stuff, nice 70's/80's soul & funk, cool deep and a couple of killer 60's thrown in as well. Plus we will be playing a few tracks from our latest project 'Todays Soulful Sounds Of Detroit' which will be out on a vinyl Lp in the next few months. this is a 8 track LP with all new material from the city recorded in the last few years. Sunday morning 10.00 - 12.00, Soul People Show Sky Digital Channel 0129 or from the site www.solarradio.com Cheers Dave & Malayka
  5. Hi Mark Your right there was last year and it was you that started the thread But no harm giving another boost Cheers Dave
  6. Hi Mark It may have been, but Hadley said that they had had promise of support from people in the UK, got no feedback and no visable sales. I said I would help see if I could help get a little exsposure for them. Dave
  7. Hi Mate Hope all is well, see you up at Lifeline next month, also are you coming up to Boomarang ? The Acappella version on the LP are fantastic Dave

  9. Just received two interesting new CD's from Producer Hadley Murrell, Meet... The Servicemen and Crown Princes of funk, Freddi/Henchi and The Soulsetters. Hadley worked in the 60's Phoenix as a radio dj and concert promoter, here he met The Servicemen & Freddie/Henchi and worked with both groups to produce some great soul music. Hadley first met The Servicemen in 1966 when they were based at Luke Airforce Base. The group played him a copy of their 45 on Chartmaker - Connie/Sweet magic. He was very impressed with these and their live vocal style. Along with James Mitchell, he took them to Audio Recorders and cut a bunch of songs including, 'Are you angry' and 'I need a helping hand'. Haldley believed that these songs were as good as anything coming out of Detroit or Memphis at the time, so set off up and down the west coast trying to do a deal, but non came. Believing in the tracks so much, he then returned to Phoenix and deciced to put the tracks out on his own Wind Hit label, pressing up about 200 copies. Although he managed to get some local radio action, very little else happen to the tracks. A year later he went back into the studio and cut some more tracks with the band, including 'My turn' and I'll stop loving you'. He was then able to cut a deal with L.A. label Pathway for I need a helping hand and My turn, but again little success came, so nothing was done with the other tracks in the can. Not long after this the group transferred off the airbase aand with in a year they all lost touch with each other. To this day Hadley has not been able to find any of the groups members and so another northern soul ledgend is born. 'Are you angry', I need a helping hand' along with their earlier Chartmaker sides go on to become classics on the european rare soul scene. This new CD includes all eight tracks Hadley recorded with the group, plus killer acappella versions of 'Are you angry', 'I need a helping hand', My turn' and 'Come back to me'. The whole thing comes with great gatefold hard cardboard sleeve, cool informative notes, along with several great photos of the band. Mastering on all the tracks is of the highest quality. Hadley first met The Soul Setters at The Abel Hall in Phoenix where he was the dj. This relationship was to become the longest lasting of all the music projects he worked on, with him becoming their producer, manager and worked on the developement. In 1966 he took the group to Audio Recorders to cut their debut release as The Soul Setters, 'Cecil, the unwanted french fry' along with a rowdy version of James Brown's 'Out of sight', this came out on the L.A. label Onacreast. That same year Fred Gowdy join the group as lead singer, after jumping up on stage at a local gig and singing a song with the group. He Join members of the original band The Fabulous Jokers, Bobby 'Soul' Fraijo, Tony Neibles, Jimmy Fraijo, Rudy Valenzuela and Paul Henricks and Chuy Castro, who had recently joined the band, Freddy's arrival gave the group a new dynamic. They then built a great reputation for their crazy stage show and dance routines and toured under the name Freddy Love and The Soul Setters. The group expanded once again to include local famed dancer Marvin Graves (Henchi) as another singer. Set with this line up the group developed their skills. As the 60's moved on the group relocated to L.A. Throughout the rest of the 60's and early 70's the group continued to record with Hadley and tour. The group started to slowly wind down by the mid 70's, doing their final recordings with Hadley in 75. This CD spans their recordings including many of their funk classic recorded with Hadley Murrell. Just like the other CD in come in a nice hardcover gatefold, lots of great sleeve notes and a whole bunch of group photo's. Again the sound quality and mastering is fantastic. Both CD's can be found at major internet stores, such as Amazon
  10. Cheers Mate, he'll be very happy to hear that. Cheers Dave
  11. Awesome sales pitch, you've managed to tie up the sections of the forum
  12. Been playing this in europe for a few years as The Memphians - Mississippi Sunrise C/U, hand about ten of these sold all of them barr one, so clearly someone likes it. Comes on a tiny Detroit label (MTNA), Bland Allison - I can't get back to you again pt1-2 and is infact Rudy Robinson and his band, the label was owned by Jim Holland of the Holidays. It's part 2, bit of an oddity as pt1 a group ballad sounds nothing like this instrumental. bland allison - can't get back to you again 2 - mt
  13. Better find a tank of water for it then
  14. Thats cuz Bob's got taste
  15. Doris Wilson - Big Flame on Authentic A friend has one of these and wondered how much Thanks Dave
  16. Happy New Year James Your youngish and I'm sure I've seen you dance at least once, get yourself down.
  17. Having so many problems with packages taking forever to get anywhere, even had a signed for package go missing, it's a nightmare at the moment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  18. Agree Seb, Tooooon!!!!!!!!!!
  19. sir joe - nobody beats my love - ru-jac
  20. There are a few things on Sport with Willie Mitchell productions, always thought of the label as a Detroit one, anyone know the connection.
  21. Spoke to Joe only a few weeks ago and he tells me he has no more. He says he has looked everywhere and asked everyone in the family, with no joy. So don't know where else to look for it, don't think it every made it out to local dj's
  22. First found it at Joe Quarterman's house, found three copies, sold one to Dave Greet, Butch and kept one, Butch and I first played it at Bamberg. A few months later Ady found one at the Bristol record fair, looking through a box just ahead of Malayka (think the box was Spacehoppers). Later Joe found me a couple more with relatives, these went to Andy and Ion. That's seems to be all that have turned up. Joe told me, the record was withdrawn from release and all the copies distroyed, after he had an argument with the late owner of the label. He grab a few copies as he walked out of the offices of Ru-Jac, but it's fair to say he must have patched things up, as he produced things later for the label. I spoke to Winfield Parker about it, who now ownes all the master tapes and he told me the record didn't exist and he didn't have a tape for it. Interestingly it has no catalog number on the record label and doesn't appear in most discogs for the label.
  23. It was a real joy to see a room full of people, happy to hear such a diverse selection of music being played. Chris, Mace and I were just blown away by the response. This will live long in my memory, along with every minute of The Bamberg weekender and a very special goodbye to Brad (Mr Detroit) Hales as he left the sunday session. Others would be.... First hours of the new year (12 months ago) in Berlin, and two nights later at Hip City, great open minded crowd, up for it. Butch's set at Boomerang and Bamberg's small room Every Lifeline I went to this year Movin' on Barcelona, awesome My one visit to Va Va Voom, even with the poor sound system, the fight, still a great night. and lastly a slightly strangly, Kings Hall, not always my cup of tea, but to walk into a room that packed, with that much love and passion for the music, did remind me of back in the day, but I try not to live in the past. Kev is one of the best at what he does. Not a bad year all in all
