Where And When Did Northern Soul Dancing Start?
Hooker1951 replied to Davebanks's topic in All About the SOUL
It's a hybrid of what came before with maybe not all the time feeling the music that was done before with Rock n Roll and And RNB people felt those same emotions and danced accordingly to it, there's a hell of a lot of NS dancers great at gymnastics but not so good at feeling the music and there's a hell of a lot of NS dancers not good at Gymnastics what can feel the music, what you feel on the dancefloor you can express with your movement not a preplanned Olympic event I for one can spot someone going through a routine and somebody feelin it, you cant analyse a feeling you just go with it if it feels right I've been dancing all my life, if I couldn't feel it I wouldn't do it simple as that it's freestyle dancing to your own emotions to the music you love if you wanted to generalise but it's much more than that to the person feelin it and moving to it but to think that'its completely original is being in denial of what came before and anybody who knows about music knows that lots of things came before and made that evolution into the term NS dancing, I'm saying all this before some Boffin of Ballyhoo decides that it was them or some prima Donna they worship invented it , NS dancing came from the evolution of RNB Rock n Roll dancing plus all the many dance styles of the early sixties simple as or as complicated as that ML -
Where And When Did Northern Soul Dancing Start?
Hooker1951 replied to Davebanks's topic in All About the SOUL
In thousands of clubs and ballrooms all over America and the U.K. In the 1950's and 60's doing backflips spins, shuffling to up tempo RNB and Rock n Roll, My first memory is being 7years old in Butlins Phwelli Ballroom 1958 staying up late because the last hour was Rock n Roll and being amazed watching the dancing,Take a look at the Flamingoes in 1958 Tommy Hunt included dancing to Jump baby Jump, or any old Jackie Wilson tapes if the music and the tempo is right you can do very similar moves to NS, and that is exactly what the dancers did then kind Regards ML -
Where And When Did Northern Soul Dancing Start?

I was going to clubs in the Wigan area ect in 1965 onwards, Room at the Top being one of them and what is termed as NS dancing was going on then believe me I used to dance, before that as a kid I used to watch the lads and the odd girls do a hybrid NS dance to Rock n Roll it's been going on in some sort or another since 1953 not 1973, in the UK the teddy boys did their interpretation of it in the early 1950,s kind regards ML -
The Casino resembled in 1975 the biggest youth club in the world enjoying theirselves , nothing wrong with that if you were in that age group, very few people over the age of 22 the majority were aged between 15 to 19 it was part of their youthful exuberance and their love of good music plus the help of a few chemicals that made many into the NS characters with a real taste of real NS later on until today, I called in the summer oof 75 and although only 23 felt like I was very grown up , not uncomfortable, just to grown up 10 years later that didn't matter because all thos kids were grown up, Everybody has to start somewhere and the Casino was that for them ! The Wheel however always seemed grown up, I worked over in GERMANY in the mid 70's and their was a great underground scene going on there incorporating Soul and what became later in the 1980's popcorn which felt right for me at the time a lot deeper less superficial and more grown up but the Casino at the time just like a lot of clubs around the country in a lot of different formulas was a rite of passage for the youth of the day as regards Soul Music it's called diversity as long as all roads lead th Rome ML

They've already been knocking here I've booked a bed and breakfast for the night ML

Either ask Mick Jagger or Keith Richard do they want to tell the story about Dave Godin or its just could have, would have, should have, or we will have Dave Godin inventing penicillin next, let's give it a rest ML

Everybody has to start somewhere, Jimmy Hendrix picked a lot of his showmanship from Little Richard when he was in his backing band although he was a great guitarist Jimmy had problems with being punctual Richard ran a tight band like James Brown and had to sack him Otis Reading picked a lot of his abundant talent from being in Richards band, So you can say everybody to a certain extent models themselves on who they admire till they find their own identity if they do, some never do . Rolling Stones did with their kind of Rock, and it made them ultra famous , it wasn't for me but good on them, What the Rolling Stones did do is bring to the attention of if you weren't a one off ,a great number of blues artists, and a belly full of RNB stars, There was no internet or world communication like their is now so they helped Stars in the USA get credited for what they had originally invented great music , in 1963 64 I was one of the only kids in my school who had heard of Solomon Burke , Irma Thomas , Athur Alexander, Valentinoes, Ike Turner Revue, all because of my interest in the Rolling Stones I looked behind the curtain and liked what I saw, the Stones really admired those artists and helped them in Britain and in some cases resurrected their careers in the USA they put their own stamp on Chuck Berry,s Come On, and the Valentinos it's all ove Now. Getting back to the subject of Mick Jagger and Dave Godin L oL, Mick Jagger is still alive and kicking making girls pregnant and everything else what famous people do and along with the rest of the stones who are still alive as nobody ever thought of asking him and the rest of the stones their take on the relationship I'm sure they would be big enough to tell you especially Keith Richard who is straight forward kind of guy kR Mick Lyons

The music that I love and have grown up with always as a relevance to me it's part of soul and who IAm today, I am also well read in books and life's experiences as regards myself having anger management issues I can assure you I don't in fact I made a good living for over 45 years sorting people out did, you do come across I'm afraid as passive aggressive, anyone who thinks somebody who wished peace and tranquility on them had anger issues must have underlying problems, It seems to me that your pretty much obsessed with millions of pounds I haven't got that problem, Not only have I been seeing acts since 1963 I was involved in the Night club industry for over 40 years actually looking after the artists security wise so if you have seen more live acts than me good on you but I very very much doubt it , I've also lived with the brothers , Danced with the brothers and been told by the brothers that I am a brother in the USA and other foreign climes but this article is about Mick Jagger and Dave Goddin not me and you LoL Take it easy and have a great day things might be better tomorrow kind Regards ML

I know they played live in the Empress Ballroom in what was to become The Casino in November 1963 they were special guests playing second billing to the Beat Boys a local wigan band I was there and they caused quite a stir ML PS in all honesty from a logical point of view I wouldn't think Dave Godin would have had that much influence on on Mick jagger,s thoughts on RNB at the time all the group were bang into RnBwith the exception of Charlie watts who preferred Jazz Leave Dave Godin with the glory of naming Northern Soul Leave Mick jagger to being a Rolling stone ML

Totally understand, I'm basing my respect on where they came from what their achievements came to in the fore a mentioned years and in the early 60,s so to me they deserve that respect not al the egotism that came later which effected a lot more than just the Rolling Stones and many USA artists and bands as well you can only remember what you remember and at the time they struck a big chord with me which led me elsewhere and a lot of great music That's your prerogative , I've maid mine, I've never mentioned anybody who made a fortune was good, got nothing to do with it all I just told you what I saw , what I heard when it was happening and passed my opinion I was there was you ? I've DJ,d northern and RNB and promoted all over the country MC,d for all the major Dance DJ,s seen probably more top acts in all kinds of musical genres than probably any individual I know I can still do it now so I know maybe a little bit of what I'm talking about, The Rolling Stones were right for that time as regards RNB otherwise you might never have known about Alexander Arthur, Irma Franklin, Solomon Burke, ect ect , ect Bo Didley and Chuck Berry were already established Why the ? Mark after Peace and Tranquility if you don't understand what th means you've must have a real problem if you want to be a real Soulman open yourself up to the music and other people's opinions that's all Peace and Tranquility if you led the life I had you would no what it meant God Bless ML

If you had read what I said carefully, I said that in 1963, 64, they were a wild RNB band and they were good at what they did even if it was mirroring the original sounds from the USA What they did then was to find their own identity. It wasn't to my likening I give them credit even if it was for those first few years to making their own stamp and style on covers of RNB classics that brought to us the attention of the USA original artists, and they were at that time a fantastic live visual band they covered songs that were unheard to a great majority of British music and RNB lovers, And believe me Mick Jagger and Keith Richards if questioned would tell you that the original artists and tunes from the USA was better, I didn't particular like what they did later but Obviosly a lot of people did or else they wouldn't have been around the last 56 years, but if you didn't see them in 63,64 , live you can't really comment and as for telling Mick Jagger to fuck off I don't think he would give a flying fuck either with 200 £ million in the bank Peace and Tranquility ML
-
Give credit where it's due as regards the Rolling Stones I first watched them in 1963, then 1964, then 1965 in 63 they were a young wild Rn B outfit and they were pretty good at what they did as for 64 it was more of the same but looking for their own identity by 65 66, it was becoming their own brand far removed from those early years we all know original is nearly always the best but they did their best paying homage to Chuck Berry, Arthur Alexander ' ,Solomon Burke, Valentinoes ect , and in some cases put their own identity on those covers, you would have to have seen them when I did to pass a true judgement but believe me they weren't bad those days and I've seen as many top acts over the last 55 years as nearly anyone ps Give Dave Godin his dues Give Mick Jagger and the Rest of the Rolling Stones there,s kind Regards ML

The Chants were a great soulful Rn B outfit in the 1960,s they were kept under because the fad at the time was beat music their style was more American , they were pretty famous in the North West obviously in Liverpool running parallel with the Beatles, Searchers , ect because at the time 90 % of what became beat groups were doing soul and RNB in their live performances by late 1963 the emphasis had changed to the new music craze which was beat the Chants fronted by Eddie and his brother stuck to their roots and got left behind by the more commercial beat sound till they reinvented their selves as the Real thing so at their hard work paid off fianacially in 1975 after 13 years of gigging touring, Eddie and his group even learned to play their own instruments so they could deliver the music on their terms before that the Chants were a vocalist group Rest in Peace Eddie Amoo A real Liverpool Soul Man ML

Never heard a DJ yet that sounds better than Roy Hamilton Jackie Wilson, Tony Middlelton or another 1000 artists and I don't think I ever will don't want to cause offence but a lot of Dj,s hide behind the mic because they can't put the music together so they break it up slow things down . When I started out the music never stopped this talking between tunes crept in I don't know why , and a lot of new people on the music scene just accepted it but the old ways were forgotten thank the last DJ introduce yourself non stop music for an hour before last introduce next DJ say goodbye and hope everybody appreciates what you've done for them let the music talk not your mouth only my humble opinion by the way keep on keeping on Mick L -

I always put my own stamp on every set I've ever played without the verbals it's not the jokes it's the way you tell them it only becomes lap. Top memory stick when it's pre planned I always played live for that particular audience that venue that night after I've played a spot the records are all over the place due to last second decisions to try to suit the crowd the music speaks volumes you can talk to the DJ when he,s finished his set, like you say everybody to their own I was brought up in the music world of starting the ride and it doesn't stop till you decide especially if people are loving it 1 hour of forgetting your worries and getting lost in music, your a live act or should be talking brings people back to earth too soon just my humble opinion .as regards verbals I used to mc at all the big raves that complimented the music you can't make soul music any better by talking that way the musics the star and not the DJ just my humble opinion LoL ML -
The clenched fist is a Go jo -Ryu karate Symbol and badge to wear on your Gi I know I trained in that particular martial art for a number of years and taught it to my employees it is in its purity a street style of combat not a sport very effective where it's popular on the west coast of America if a NS walked in a Do jo there he would think he d gone home Regards ML

I've never ever cued a record in while doing a DJ set I've always relied on running one in by fading one out you play more records and non stop music the problem with doing it this way is you've got to keep your nerve on the change over its not for the faint hearted but it always worked for me most of the time anyway L oL, Everybody as their own style hope you find a solution I'm sure you will get some good advice from the Jocks on here King Regards ML -
Hi John you could never agree on a set way to end a night it depends on the venue ,location ambience, what's happened earlier music wise, alchohol , drugs, the crowd , if your ready for those issues you should be able to play a great spot of course depending on what's in your record box, if you read through some of the replies in this thread it should prepare you , anyway good luck ML
-
How about just playing the best soul you have just like everybody should have been playing all night and weighing up the ambience of the crowd at th time in the morning taking into consideration the amount and strength of the narcotics that have been available and of course the alcohol consumption and of course the crowd are they die hard SOULIES or part time SOULIES, feed all this info into a good computer along with your record collection and wait for the formula the first 25 records on the list you've got your spot! I I can do this without a computer so far but you never know You've got to Laugh or you'd end up insane kind Regards ML

Don't take this Personally Mate but I don't thing being a NS DJ is going to be your thing kind Regards ML
