  1. I think it was Johnny Holmes that worked in that Studio, He'd been making a film next door. "What a great post" Rod
  2. Richard, Sandra Richardson-Stay here with me ; what a great tune, but with Jack Ashford producing it , it had quality written all over it. I think your bang on with your ideas about new stuff, my lad Dj's on the scene in the north west and where Always on the lookout for new records. I get Cd's Sent me from friends from different parts of the country from anniversary venue dates, and I've been impressed; how many great tunes might get played in that area and not the north west. So we always seem to find new stuff for us to find and play out. I always look on the threads with play list or recommendations, seems to do the trick. Keep it fresh .Rod Clegg
  3. Thanks Les, had to be 60s track with a title like that. Rod
  4. I'll have to look out for Heartbreaker by Show Stoppers Kev H, What a great track! But what's the A side? Rod
  5. I have a record by Little Tracy Kerr - We've got a good thing going on the Stang Records Label, I think this must have been here first release as her father George Kerr had the inscription GOOD LUCK TRACY FROM DAD. in the run out. Interesting record written by the THE CORPORATION - JOBETE, And Produced by George Kerr & Sylvia. Not a great record by my taste! She must have been very young going by the vocals. Rod Clegg
  6. Gene-R, I think that could be the label? Only kids at the time, but still didn't put the label on as the Swan record looked the part and had the right track on it. I binned the cheap looking label, and by the look of the picture on popsike" I did the right thing' but all the same they played a huge part in that early Northern Soul Scene. Good Times. Rod
  7. Rick, thanks for your thoughts on the mystery of Hey Sah-lo-ney, you may be not far off the Mark. The Swan label did look a proper one, but the label they gave you to stick on was red, basic, and a bit plain with not to much Info on it .Time" could have been reason for that ,so they could get the orders out kwik. I bought a black swan copy years later off Tim Brown at the Ritz. Also I'll tell you my short memory is crap, but seem to remember that the lists behind the counter back in the 70s did have some sort of A-E Price type code and would have been no more than about 10 sheets. Hey Rick" Working for Global records in the 70s must have been like a kid working in a sweet shop! Did Richard Searling work there at sometime? Thanks again mate. Rod Clegg.
  8. It's the Intro for me that make it stand out, from the first cord you know what it's going to be and you would head for the dancefloor (Yesteryears I'm talking about,) other records that have that kick-start our Let the good times roll + tracks like Breakout. But going back to your explanation for Hey sah-lo-ney, that would takeout the bootleg theory and give it a bit more Cred! Not that we where to bothered in the early 70 s thanks for that mate. Rod
  9. Paul, Mark Waters and his Brother Steve I know well,In fact I was with Mark on New Years night at a social club called the Fleetwood Hesketh,The two brothers went to Wigan week in week out in 70s. He asked me a while back to look through his records to see if any where worth anything. After doing some research, I had to tell him" sorry Mark nearly all Pressings and Boots. But what Menories and a bit of history of the Casino he had,he told me he wouldn't have sold them as they where part of his life that he treasured. Rod.
  10. Paul, I must Know you as myself, Derek Hodge, Colin Taylor, used to take our records to play at St Marie's at that time. Monday night at the Dixie was a big night then for anyone in the teens, A good mate of mine was the main DJ His name was Happy! You can guess he took his name from the William Bells tune. Rod Clegg
  11. Paul, 1973 date about right! Don't know about the Reggae stuff but used to take me forever to go through the cards. Cardboard cards Where used, no vinyl 45s on show till you took card to counter for them to retrieve record so that you could check condition, seemed to work though with cheap records to be had such as Dells-wear it on the face, Tony Clark- Landslide, Billy Stewart-Summertime,loads of Tamla,Soul,Motown, but like I said they did a list for the in-demand Imports tunes at the time, records like Stay,Running for my life,Going to the Happening, Breakout,You get your kicks,AND SO ON AND ON AND ON..----DWR don't know what the girls name was" but she was a looker and new about Soul Music. Rod
  12. In the early 70s I ordered a copy of HEY SAH-LO-NEY from the Record Supermarket in Eastbank st , Southport, the shop sold ex duke box, motown, and American Imports. The Imports varied in prices from 30p 60p 75p up would, but from a list behind the counter you could order on demand records. I went back a week later to pick it up, and was handed a copy of FREDDIE CANNON-TALLAHASSEE On SWAN label with another label to stick over it. What I can't get my head round is why a legit looking record with different title and artist, with a cheap looking stick on label? I never did put that label on,I think it was a pillar box red with not to much on label. In a early JM bootleg booklet he describes it as one of those little Mysteries surrounding bootlegs. Any thoughts. Rod Clegg happy new year everyone.
  13. I'm happy without you- Ann Byers. What a great tune, very Mary Wells come Motown type Rod
  14. Wiggyflat, In the long run- Curtis Blandon is a super record that you just don't hear. John May , would love to look through your record boxes, some great tunes mentioned Kev Farley, you put me on to that Raisin Sugar Cane great tune with bags of atmosphere and as for the O'JAYS, they didn't make a bad record. so many Jems out there, no need to play the same old same. Rod
  15. Hi Roburt, sorry I'm late mate.Well it goes like this my wife and I went on a Caribbean cruise for my 50th. I knew that I wouldn't have time to look in America as it was a night flight, looking at the ports that we would be stopping at: Nassau seemed best bet. When we got to Nassau and got of the ship, the wife and her sister did the usual sightseeing trip to the shops(every bloody shop). So I ran of to find anyone who might know where to find a record shop, a bobby! Just the man, I asked if a record shop existed in Nassau and he gave me directions down a side street. When I got there I was disappointed ;Cd,s Game shite but no Records, dam, just about to leave when lad behind the counter asked what I was looking for! I looked at this bit of a kid and tried to explain what a 45 or LP was. After a long silence he said that he had an Aunt that might still have some records in an old shed, he rang her while I'm standing there, and he relayed what music I was looking for. As not to complicate the task I said' Soul music, Motown, Stax, Atlantic,he nodded his head and said his Aunt would be on her lunch break in an hour and would show me what she had. I ran to catch up with the wife only to find she had only moved about six shops on. I told her that I was meeting up with this old dear ( ? ) in an hour and that I would be back in plenty of time to catch the boat we where booked on for a trip. I trotted of again to the shop and met up with the lad again, he told me his cousin would take me to meet up with his Aunt, not thinking anything wrong I said OK. In comes this youth with all the rapping shit on and I thought Oh no. Sure enough it was him and off I went thinking what are you doing. Along the way he asked me what I did for a job ( starting to get a little nervous about the situation I went from being a postie to being a copper ) we carried walking but this was at midday and it must have been in the 90s and I was feeling a bit worse for wear. After we walked for a mile or two up and down alleyways past an old cemetery I shouted STOP I'm not going any further and I'm running out of time; he said it's just around the corner and I said if that's the case bring them to me. He said look from the corner and I'll get my Aunt to come out so you can see her; OK you go and get her to come out with the records and we'll meet, sure enough she stood there with a holdall in her hands.I went over a bit gingerly to where she was and took a look inside her bag, about 300 plus singles, mostly soul on STAX,MOTOWN,DAKER,ATLANTIC,MERCURY,VOLT,GLADES,etc with a few Funk Classics.( yes Nassau gone funky was one)we agreed a price after a bit of a fuss and me telling her I wasn't much bothered as the state was poor, I had to laugh she wanted the holdall back,so I transferd the 45s to my lightweight haversack that now weighed 1/2 hundred weight, knackerd ,sweating, late, And feeling a bit stupid I made my way back to the harbour to meet up with the wife as they where getting on the boat for the trip. I won't tell you what she called me? But in answer to your question, there are NO record shops in NASSAU::; was it worth it YES... ROD
  16. Quinvy,Sorry mate it's my fault, wait till it gets to page five! You'll be putting a rope round your neck. MERRY XMAS . ROD
  17. Andy,I had a funny but frightening experience in NASSAU looking for records, I nearly missed the boat ! Give me shout if you want details .Rod Clegg
  18. Ian Dewhirst, Kev Farley, Byrney' Benji' Back Street Blue' Kev H, Jothn May and loads of others, thanks a million. I didn't have to like them all but a few have had me reaching for pen and paper' that was a great result for me to tap into your vast amount knowledge. Rod
  19. Kev H ,That's a gritty track from the moments, most of there's tend to be more mellow" Rod
  20. Andy, think it may have been at Steve Plumbs do at the Orwell, Wigan few years ago, would'nt have given it time of the day in the 70s. It's my kind of music nowadays, great Soul Music. Rod
  21. Where bloody hell I've been? Wounded Woman-Sandra Wright is SOooooo Good. Jeanette, always a floor filler, Prove it to me, don't hear it out to often. And what a fantastic tune:I won't cry-Tommy Smiley is, truly didn't know it! Well done Andy Dyson and Co.I fully agree with Chalky and Citizen P; same old play list is getting a bit Stale.
