Hank Jacobs - Alijah Rockin' With Soul / Call Me
Dennyj replied to Psamsara's topic in Look At Your Box
I've always been intrigued that this was written by Bettye Swann - waiting for as vocal to turn up !! 8-) Denny -
Fond memeories of listening to Terry Lenaine's soul show in late 70's on Rad.Merseyside on Monday nights with regular guest NS spots by Nick (?) who we used to catch up with at the Carlton in Warrington later in the week, 30 bloody years ago ?? Denny

Has anybody (besides me) noticed a big slow down in time taken for records to arrive from overseas (particularly USA and UK) ?? It usually takes about 7 days on average, 10 days max for stuff to get to Perth but I've been waiting over 2 weeks for a lot of stuff. I queried it with a USA dealer who reckoned it's something to do with those printer cartridges that were intercepted the other week. Plausible ? bastards ! *-) Denny

THE PURPLE HEARTS - "Of hopes dreams and tombstones" - SUNSHINE. First of all the bad news: 1. Label damage where some idiot has tried to peel off a sticker (not guilty ! ). See scan. 2. The vinyl looks VG+ (or slightly worse dependng how picky you are), but it's all surface marks and there's still lots of shine on the vinyl. These were pressed on good quality heavy vinyl. Now the good news: 1. Plays VG++ or better. Have a listen - this is an unfiltered mp3 and i've included the run-in and run-out. 2. Price is now 150 quid and includes registered international airmail to anywhere. The Purple Hearts.mp3 THE BOBBETTES - "I've gotta face the world" / "Having fun" - RCA wlp M- condition. Northern Soul at Lowton - The End of an Era - Fri 10th Sept
Dennyj commented on Mike's article in Event News
Wow ! just recovering from our annual All-Dayer at the Perth Irish club yesterday, and logged in to SS for a browse - to see this sad news. I'm back in UK next week-end and was gonna have a quiet one before Hitsville the following week, but now I'll grab our Angela, Pove and whoever else and we'll be there. Mike your right about taking things/places for granted, there was a time when I booked my UK trips to coincide with Lowton nights - especially the Anniversaries cos our Angela's birthday is Feb 9th and the Anniv was often on or around that date. Now I can't even remember the last time I went there, probably 2 years ago. See you there, cheers, Denny -
like most of you I've known and loved all of the obvious northern things, but I only heard Sonny Til - "Tears and misery" for the first time about 3 years ago, and it still makes me shiver ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RosBg3P8XC4 cheers, Denny

Neal is this still available ? Get back to me off list, cheers, Denny dennyj@iafrica.com POINTER SISTERS SEND HIM BACK MINT DEMO.£100

Al Green: Soul Perfection...what's Your Favourite Track?
Dennyj replied to a topic in Look At Your Box
Very topical subject down here in Perth right now as the man is performing here (at the Perth Zoo ??) in 2 weeks time. Tough too pick a fave, "Keep on pushing" does it for dance floor action, but can anybody really get tired of "Let's stay together" for smooch factor ....let's face it the bloke has probably made more soul anthems than anybody ! cheers, Denny in Oz ps - is he touring UK at the mo? any reviews ? -

Manifesto readers may have read TB's column in the July Manifesto where he (as usual) has a pop at Soul Sam, John Manship, Ady Croasdell and anybody else who dares to write or express an opinion about the NS scene. The first part of his column is devoted to an attack on the accuracy of the Ginger Taylor book, he then goes on to have a go at Sam, writing amongst other things "...I'm genuinely astounded that a former teacher is not more concerned with getting facts right..." TB then told us he was "absolutely astounded" (he seems to get astounded a lot !) to see that Betty Harris appeared live at the National Northern Soul Weekender in Perth, Australia. Well he wasn't half as astounded as myself and the 200+ other Perth & Australia residents were to read this - because we were at our National Northern Soul Weekender back in November last year, and Betty wasn't ! Maybe if TB had payed a bit more attention to Roy Burton's article in the June Manifesto, he would have read that Betty Harris actually appeared at the Fly-by-Night club in Fremantle (close to Perth) in April this year. Now what was that about "getting facts right" ?? 8-)

I've got one for you ! Unplayed. Cost = 2 pints Kilkenny 8-) Denny

Be careful, there are two cuts of this. The one that is/was played at most NS clubs is the cut that is on Bulldog. I haven't heard the Ember release, but I suspect it's the other, more "jazzy" cut - maybe somebody can confirm ? This may explain why the Bulldog release is more sought after. The US release on GM is the "jazzy" cut. I know a few people who've been disappointed, thinking they've picked up a US original, only to find it doesn't sound right ! Cheers, Denny
