I think we did take him for granted. Edwin seemed such a workaholic it became a bit 'fashionable' to groan and say 'not Edwin again' when he performed at a scooter rally. To be fair -we all still dutifully rocked up and went to see him -and always had a great time. Very much unlike so many old original acts who could be pitifully dire, Edwin always made an effort -no matter how small the crowd. In some ways, the smaller the crowd the more intimate it became. My favourite memory goes back to a local festival in 2002 and a 'phone call from a mate 'Edwin Starrs playing down the park tonight' -after checking we found out it was indeed true and trooped down there with around 30 or 40 local soulies/scooterists. By crikey, I can feel my neck tingling now -a warm summers evening and a couple of lame support acts despatched with, we'd managed to get into the front rows at this point and when the man himself came on we were shouting out all sorts of stuff and he came to the front of the stage with a wide smile and announced 'soulies and scooterboys here!' Local press reported there were 20,000 people there that night -I think that's about 10 x what was in the park, but for us in that front row or so it was Edwin and us, no one else. What a great night. He'd still be gigging now if he hadn't gone far too soon. -

You do hear RLSD and similar at some south west events but only very, very occasionally. I don't think I've heard it played out this year yet. It does tend to be those events that tread a fine line (whether by design or in error) margining into handbaggers territory to be fair. As Russ says, it was very popular indeed in the South in the 80's a real scooter boy compilation anthem in fact. I don't have it and wouldn't play it, there's plenty of overplayed but still genuine soul to keep those type of audiences happy without having to merge into pop. -

Definitely a 'scooterist soul' record. Nothing wrong with that -and it's favourite of mine along with the normal culprits like 'love really hurts etc. We had some new faces at west wilts Saturday night, and requests came in, which all of the residents had lurking in our 2nd or 3rd boxes at home, but which we never get any call for and so we didn't have. predictably: the snake, footsie, red light. I actually offered to play Greg Perry/Jeff Perry, but that wasn't good enough. Apparently we were all only playing 'underplayed & mega rare' stuff no-one knows! Apart from the 60+ people on the dance floor for 5 hours that is! Frankly 99% I hear the phrase 'underplayed' as some sort of critique it's always from someone that never goes anywhere -it ain't underplayed mate -it's underheard -by you! -
Maybe it's just my interpretation, but whenever I see that I read: non OV handbaggers 'do'. I'm sure some must be great nights with varied music but of those we've heard of they've not been my cuppa for sure.

It's an odd thing grading and since I've only really collected seriously since 2020 it's also been a steep learning curve. Those dealers who I can rely on to supply decent properly graded records in a timely fashion, packed properly and at a fair price get my repeat, repeat & repeat again business -they know who they are! I'd probably say JM and silver fox are at the very top of my 'sigh of relief' score board when I see they have what I want. They won't be the cheapest, but they'll tick every other box. NB: I'm ignoring the complaint within this thread as I have nothing to add or comment on it apart from to say the thread asked about JM grading and these are my views.

My little brother went and wasn't all that impressed, he didn't think they played much 'proper northern', although as he's more into Jazz funk I'll take that as 'mainstream northern'. He also thought it was amusing that drinks were evident on the floor when in our little club anyone daring to do that would be very quickly re-educated!* I wish her luck & she clearly did well by finding a venue in Bristol since everyone else seems to struggle. Bristol needs a regular night and if they get an OV one anytime soon, we'll be there, guaranteed. We had high hopes for Shrine of souls but that was never repeated so the last really regular events (other than go-go all-nighters) must've been the icerink & rock pile back in the day. * I have to be fair here though -with all the spiking arse*oles out there in younger peoples clubs I can't really blame people for keeping hold of a drink at all costs. -

Obviously I'm very biased, but we were chuffed to bits to have 82 in at West Wilts Soul Club. I'd be very pleased to hear anyone else thoughts of WWSC -we aren't too precious to take criticism and lord knows we had microphone issues (now under examination!) but hopefully everyone who came felt it was well worth the door fee and journey. It's a small club and 70 ish is a normal night usually, although we have a 120 capacity with the ratio of dancers/sitters we were lucky to have it would have been a very crammed floor with too many more! I think most people were comfortable with being asked just to respect each others space, we had the air con on (although it didn't feel like it! Some tweaks to do next time to reflect the build up of dancers heat I think) and hand sanitisers dotted about also. I was especially chuffed to see such a large travelling contingent from all over, it's taken us nearly 4 years of really hard work to get such a large number of 'week in week out' dancers (as opposed to the once or twice a year casual attendees) and it seems to be paying off. I had some nice feedback so far, so hopefully we'll see all the new faces again when we have our 2nd event this year on November 27th. I'm not sure what any new government rules will entail fromSeptember, although we will, as ever, be seeing what's going on at the myriad of events we'll be going to before then and adopting what we feel is 'best practice'. Thanks again to the dancers, chatters and of course our resident DJs, and regulars and most of all our own 'Mrs Woods' Katie who polices the door & floor with ruthless efficiency!
