  1. Interesting topic but it has been covered here in this very forum before. topic/320896-northern-soul-is-it-a-trademark/ A film/play/fashion shoot are obviously & ultimately deemed worthy or not by their audience, whether we like it or not or think it reflects fairly or not on the soul scene, to that end my opinion (not being old enough to have been at any of the iconic venues of the 70's) will differ from many friends a few years older, isn't that always the case? As for tat in all its guises -again it's judged by its consumers, the rest of us can laugh at it or blame the promotor if they allow it in their venue. I'd guess in answer to who's in charge? -no one of course, there may or may not be a consensus of opinion but in reality it doesn't matter since no one can lay any legal claim of ownership. Personally I love that, nothing says more that 'soul is for everyone' than not being able to copyright it.
  2. It'll be interesting I'm sure. My main gripe is the flat percentage of everything including postage as a fee, this just serves to drive prices ever upward and to the detriment of discogs -onto other selling platforms -social media in particular. I think I'm probably the same as most buyers/sellers I prefer to do these in the order of: 1. face to face in cash 2. via direct message to someone I know 3. via a trusted platform with electronic payment 4. via a direct message with someone I don't know (risky though it is) If 3 is no good due to high prices/high fees then all of the others are far more attractive in comparison. I'd also like to see changes to the way users can download data -i.e. the price paid shown on csv exports included.
  3. That’s what you get for skipping history class Jase!
  4. When this sort of social media 'look at me I'm doing Northern soul' dance routine was first seen on YouTube etc, it was felt by many, including me, to be 'ok in small doses' or 'Ok for the kids to be doing it'. Perhaps we all naively hoped they'd either move onto something else or be encouraged and encourage others into the scene proper, for some time that appeared to be the case. I wish it had stayed that way as surely that's where the 'as long as they're having fun' statement was fair? Unfortunately it's where the mainstream national media latched onto this 'new thing' and took those specific creators absolutely seriously, it has crossed the Rubicon. The irony is, that if the genuine respect of the rest of the real rare soul scene were rewarded in hard currency, these people now declaring themselves as spokespeople for the rest of us wouldn't have enough to buy a cup of tea.
Our 1st visit and it won't be the last. Gorgeous club, just friendly from the get go, it felt like those mod parties of my youth -the sort that you were very privileged to get invited to, intimate with beautiful touches, we loved it. Absolutely fantastic sound quality from what was very clear to me, a well thought out set up by people who genuinely care about what people hear - as one whose spent years getting their own venues sound absolutely spot on I take off my hat to who set this lot up -rich, bassy and with crystal clear acoustics, a work of art in audio. As for the DJs- every single one played their hearts out with absolutely banging tunes all night, the floor was busy throughout -and I do mean every single tune played! Show me another club that can boast that! We knew from old that Taz would play a blinder and he didn't disappoint, I think he even played something I can afford to buy! But guests & residents alike were on top form. Our first visit as we were in the area anyway, but it's a full & hard 3 and a half hours drive otherwise, so we're planning our next trip for the not too distant future! A dancers club, a record collectors club, even an audio equipment fanatics club -above all A SOUL CLUB, I'd say this really is a 'must do', without the remotest fear of argument.
  5. Thanks Jase. Your memory is much better than mine & I thank you for the detail. I went to the rock pile a few times & the Mayfair suite - although we definitely called it’ the ice rink’ to be fair, probably a throw back to school trips to go skating! To be fair, I’m not knocking either Eve or Levanna personally or the events /clientele they attract - as a promoter I know very well that it’s easy to snipe from an armchair than actually lay down cash & put events on. Mike Shawe I know from BR - he’s still running events on the modern side too I believe. Nice bloke. Perhaps the statement that seems to have gotten everyone talking was edited? i can’t think why otherwise such a seemingly definitive statement about ‘nothing being on in Bristol in the past etc’ was made, if you weren’t actually there at the time?
  6. Eve A is 'Levannas' mum & co hosts the Bristol NSC events. AFAIAA she was connected with Stafford 'Top of the world', at some point -just what I've heard anyway. The Edwin Starr story aside, it simply isn't credible to say Bristol was a NS black hole before the millennium - nothing about Yate, the ice rink all-nighters or even little events of which there were loads on a regular basis in the city throughout the 80's with a few even popping up since -including some which ran for years & were pretty well attended - stuff like go-go children allnighters etc. It's pretty ironic to have such a seeming poor memory really, as she had 3 Bristol NS DJs at her own gig last weekend, at least 1 of who has been on the local scene for decades. Oops.

  11. Indeed, I recognise a few real mods I know well within it.
  12. Another nail in the coffin perhaps , but, if it's any consolation - the real mod scene still survives in one form or another despite decades of being pastiched, insulted & misrepresented. The only concern to me is those who are easily persuaded that an image shown on TV (or even worse social media) is genuine and start popping up at proper events only to be disappointed (or even worse trying to change what we have into what they think it should be!)
  13. I feel as much genuine sorrow for those conned by this nonsense. If you have to buttonhole it, categorise it and especially if you have to sanitise it & water it down then it ain't Northern soul.
  14. TBF I didn't say I had one. I have an original FWIW.
  15. Absolutely cracking alldayer, best we've been to in decades! Do yourself a favour -this is truly worth the trip -however far to whack in your diary.
  16. Really high quality event from start to finish. Highly recommended and a really excellent across the board (not just in name but in delivery too!) rare & northern soul. Hats off to Ruth for the hard work that's gone into this. A 2 hours drive each way for us -but we'll be back -for definite!
  17. None bad -to be fair I really didn't do many after the 80's anyway. One very memorable one that still scares the heck out of me was NYE Stoke. Felt fine until I got back to my mates (who was giving me a lift the 4 hours south) and realised when I got in my car I felt a bit odd (i.e. whoozy/pissed). It certainly wasn't the booze as after the pre drinks in 'spoons I'd stuck to red bull and only had a few of them & water until the last song and farewells. I managed to get to my home in one piece, felt a bit odd/slightly sick all day, so having a shift the next day (Railway) I tried to sleep it off. Lo & behold I got half way to work and realised I'd better ring in 'sick' as I still felt pissed (Rail limit was instant sack at 1/2 the DD limit)! This was at least 18 hours after the event and over 24 since my last alcoholic drink so there is no way I'd have been OTT. Spiked drink? I bloody well think so. No wonder the kids hang onto theirs for grim death nowadays,
  18. Yup, the Suncut one released in 2018 is a legit re-issue.
  19. intercity soul club was Yate. I bumped into a chap from Cambridgeshire up in Blackburn (selling patches funnily enough) recently who showed me photos of his personal very large patch collection from back in the day. He had several ICSC ones which I had never seen before.
  20. The first time I saw these sorts of 'dance offs' we were all much younger & it was all regarded as a bit of fun, nothing more. Unfortunately some people/promotors/ & yes -organisations making a few quid off the scene yet again, are making & taking it all far too seriously nowadays. Not being much of a dancer myself I really appreciate seeing someone who can dance well, fluidly and perhaps throw in the odd trick in the right place of a song -it shows a depth of knowledge in the tune which I can respect as much as technical prowess. In saying that I've seen people who no one would ever call a 'great dancer' on the floor immersed in a song with such emotion in their faces, close to tears sometimes - now they truly would win any competition hands down -no argument if I was judging it!
  21. Only a few from me, as there are 3 other residents plus we had 2 great guests in Dean Carr & Sara Baker to squeeze in! 1st set (early) Gospel Classics -more love that's what we need -Chess Eddie Bishop -call me- ABC promo Kennard Gardner -Do the skin -Dore Jackie Day -Before it's too late -Modern Johnny Wyatt -this thing called love- Bronco Four tracks -Charade- Note Swiss Movement -I wish our love would last forever -Golden The Fantastic Puzzles - Come back -New moon Promo 2nd set (late) Youngblood Smith -you can split -Verve promo Vince Apollo -I bear witness -Pentagon The Fabulous Apollos- Determination -Valtone James Barnett -Keep on Talking -Fame promo The Casanova two -we got to keep on -early bird The Quotations -I don't have to worry-DiVenus Carole Anderson -Taking my mind off love -Whip Pages -Heartaches & Pain -Sunstruck Bileo -You can win -MTU/Watts city

  22. Pretty lazy article really. Not very well researched -and it shows. If it was about the youth 'spin off' of NS then it didn't mention anyone outside of London, if it was London-centric but 'all ages' it missed out at least one major long running club and if was supposed to be country wide 'any ages' it missed dozens of easily found venues. It's laughable to pronounce anything connected with NS can not be retro -it's a scene largely built on releases 1965-1975 ffs. Like most other NS media stories -it had a tiny crumb of accuracy wrapped up in two tons of shite.
  23. Exactly what I thought too. I'm pleased he was given some sort of comeuppance, but as you say he could still be 'trading' had he been sensible, since he knew the records were dodgy from the outset. I'm actually disappointed that he was only fined about 1/3rd of what he took people for and would guess that's pretty much his profit margin, so all that would say to me if I were that way inclined is: even if I get caught I'll end up with a slap on the wrist, 4 months suspended is hardly a disincentive either for a scam that can clearly net millions if carried out sensibly.
  24. Now I remember: Walls club Gloucester alldayers allow overnight camping too. I think also Lawns Club Taunton allows it (but it'd be best to contact the organisers Drew & Trevor 1st as the car park there for the club is very small.
