Thanks for reminding us of that one Melv , thought that had disappeared into history. I found it behind another record in a sleeve, could have crawled up my own backside with embaressment when I did! In my defence I would say the Echoes ad did say something along the lines of if you've picked it up by accident then get in touch, though there was another more direct statement too as I thought it had been nicked. Like Mrs M says, those were hectic days...

Dug out the anniversary tape where Rob put it on the compilation, 4th anniversary so that would be late 1993. He had played it first time out before and I bought it from him that night. I kept it covered up untill Joan told me what it was one night at Congleton niter and suggested ( or was it insisted? ) I take the cover off to play that night. img085.pdf img086.pdf

Whats The Best Weekender You Have Attended And Why?
Mark W replied to Mrtag's topic in All About the SOUL
Indeed Andy, a crazy start to crazy weekends in Yarmouth... Seeing Ray Pollard walk out on stage saying "Hey, you guys blow me away, I can't wait to tell my wife about this." He looked genuinely gobsmacked, probably wasn't expecting a huge roomfull of youths going mental to be his reception..what an atmosphere and felt like something epic was happening just seeing him, voice was incredible, sounded just the same as the records when singing live. Scotland V England football match, I tried joining in the kickabout, realised I wasn't up to it, went back to the caravaan, took a pew and put the feet up. Next minute a bloke walks out of one of the bedrooms, don't know who got the bigger fright when we clocked each other, "Err, sorry mate" as I realised I was sitting in the living room of the wrong caravaan..made an exit.. ours was a few along! -
So what is the alternate take, an acetate?

That would be the Inspirations who recorded " Gotta find a new love" and "I can feel it" re-issued on Benn X? Had a cut of that unissued track in the early 90's and always thought it was master tape only. Found out on an SS thread a while back that there are a couple of versions around on original Mercury acetates. Butch used to play "Gotta find a new love", so presume he has one of the Mercury acetates. The version on the cut I have of "Gotta find a new love" is different to the Benn X reissue. Any more info on these Inspirations? Where were these tracks recorded?

Your right there AD. Posted mine in sales for £200 but got no takers a few months ago. Eventually accepted offer of £150. Cracking tune, only sold it cause I thought it would be easy to get back sometime due to Craig Moerers lot.

I was looking at software available to clean up recordings, remove hisses, background noises and the like and it got me thinking about how readily available advanced recording is these days. In the 80's and early 90's we used to give away anniversary tapes at our local soul night. We got the regular DJs to tape 6 or 7 tracks each then took those tapes to a recording studio who compiled them on to a 60 minute tape and made a hundred copies for us. The resulting sound quality was reasonable, but variable, quality and crap compared to what can be done now. So, if thats what could be done in a studio with tapes in the 80s/90s it makes me wonder how a lot of the boots were made which had pretty good sound quality. Were these boots lifted direct from the original vinyl? I assume nobody dug up the master tape of, for example, "Philly dog around the world" or "I don't like to lose." I've had the boot of PDATW and remember it to have pretty good sound. Same goes for that 4 track 7" white label which had Cecil Washington, Elusions and 2 others on it. Anything clever happening with these boots or just lifted from a good quality original vinyl?

Brilliant track, mine is the same label design as the youtube link. Didn't think it was well enough known or rare enough for a repro to be done.

Jimmy Jay "You better hold on" Associated studio acetate £350 SOLD (no more soundclips being sent as it aint mine anymore) Unissued acetate, probably a one off. This acetate was an old Colin Law spin in the late 80's and later played for a while by Rob Marriot. Rob also put it on 1 of those tapes he used to hand out copies of with his top tunes on. Has a few marks and some very minor background noise in parts. PM me for a soundclip if interested. Cheers, Mark.

Remember reading an article late 80's, probably Shades of Soul, by Martin Koppell where he told of seeing a box of hundreds of copies in Detroit but couldn't get even 1 from the owner. Next time he visited they were all gone and the owner claimed to have sold them to the UK, each at a high price. Obviously the owner did not sell them all to the UK. Would be interesting if anyone had that article and could post the full details....

Did this come out on the same issue number with only "Pray for me" on both sides? I seem to recall this from somewhere. If not, and "Baby I want you" is on every press then someone just got a hell of a bargain..... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Moments-PRAY-ME-Hog-1000B-MINT-Rare-Northern-Soul-PROMO-45-Wheelsville-/330662684174?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item4cfd08260e
