spooners crowd
-
Big Dee Irwin ,numerous tunes ,from paper moon and swinging on a star .
-
i did go there quite a few times over the years and recall going in there blocked in the early years as it was across the road from The Last Chance Saloon ,so it got visited in the small hours ,when i popped out from the Scene ...
-
its hard to believe that the music scene became so polarised in the late 60s but thats what happened ,all to do with style and fashion i guess ,big shirt collars and flared trousers and velvet jackets ,afghan coats . people were all into Sergent Peppers and wilder stuff than what was seen as boring soul and R&B . to admit you had R&B and soul records would mean being treated like a leper at that time ,so you had to keep quiet about it .
-
ok thats fine with me
-
yep in my lonely room , i had a job getting hold of that when it was issued on UK ORIOLE
-
enough of these obscurities lets confer on some top classics with a perfect sound and perfect production .. nothing can beat, stuff that gets everyone on the floor ,pumping away
-
depends on when in the 60s and where .certainly all black singers say times were hard in the late 60s and early 70s because they were out of fashion when the flower power era came along and r&B and soul was a dirty word .prices crashed thru the floor as nobody wanted them . my mates used to ridicule me for keeping my soul collection as they were all into the flower power pop stuff .there were boxes of dj copies on sale at Portobello road market stalls for a pittance . soul records issued at that time sold few hence thats why you see the things like the timi yuro 'it'll never be over for me' at very high price as it was issued in 69 . but hey she was blue eyed soul !

Do You Feel Sorry For Northern Soul Collectors Starting Out
Sceneman replied to Wiganer1's topic in All About the SOUL
in the late 60s when flowerpower came along you couldnt give away soul records as they were SO out of fashion with the old hippy boys ,surprising how times change over the years . these unfound gems are obscure because they were too mediocre with the classics in many cases of the times ,competition was too fierce. now new hunters are listening to cheapo obscure 45s kidding themselves they found a lost gem when in fact its just mediocre cheapo 45 s -

A lot of this pricy stuff wouldn't have been able to compete with all the other good 45s that were issued at the same time back when ,it was just mediocre ,it wouldn't have got into the Billboard 100 of the time .but wind the clock forward 50 years and it has achieved some weird cache and kudos by virtue of the fact they didn't sell many at the time and there's not many copies around. -
Do You Feel Sorry For Northern Soul Collectors Starting Out

one that slipped thru the net and should have been a monster was shirley and the shirells 'look what you dont to my heart ' from 1969 . that came out in the depths of the UK soul slump and when you look on popsike you find nothing ! that was one i missed at the time due i guess to little or no promotion ,and a B side too. so perceptions change over the years .why was it chucked on the B side ? we consider it a monster now with all the exceptional attributes that a NS single should have but then it was missed by a mile . mind boggling i know but then the stations were playing freda payne and 'band of gold 'instead . -
this seems to be an undocumented topic forgotten by time. broadcasting illegally from high rise towers around London suburbs when they used the power in the lift motor rooms which were entered with cloned keys .broadcasting the classics on certain times in the evenings . some like kiss went on to become legal . an old pal of mine was busted on numerous occasions with transmitting equipment which was confiscated time and again as they ran down the stairs at a south London tower block . any info to share and anecdotes on this topic ? were they broadcasting elsewhere around the country ?

prices wane and soar over the years if i told you that you could buy mint classic demos in the late 60s for 10pence or 5 old pennies would you believe it ? soul prices had slumped at that time and soul boys were dumping their collections . the problem buying good soul when they came out was there were 100s of records hitting the shops every week some, only on special order ,so you wouldn't have enough spare cash at that time to buy even a good selection of classics by the famous names. (allowing for very low wages then ) hence many good obscure titles were overlooked as they were overshadowed by the famous names and top classics and went unnoticed and sold few. record shops couldn't stock them all so you just wouldn't know what was hot or what was kerap unless someone recommended a particular title .now with the benefit of all the online resources you can get a handle on them all in short time . -
just curious but how come there is no famous names and classics amongst them ? do they have to be obscure to be favorite ??

found this on popsike quote Artist : LEN BARRY Title : 'IT'S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR' Format LP Label & Catalogue No. UK DECCA TEST PRESS (LAT 8656) Country and year of issue UK 1966 Cover Condition N/A Disc Condition EXCELLENT According to 'Record Collector', only 3 copies of this LP are known about! (I've pasted the article below). This LP belonged to someone who worked for Decca, in the 60's and was never released. No cover, or artwork was sanctioned either. It seems that it's release was due on or about the date that Len Barry was about to sign with RCA, so all production stopped. I find it incredible that no copies were pressed at all in the U.S., but there you go. As for the music, well it's a top bit of blue eyed northern soul, which you'd expect from Len Barry. A couple of the tracks were issued as 45's and the remainder have been booted over the years. I've listed the tracks below. You see some really mediocre stuff on ebay where the seller says "You won't see this one again, for a long time", but in this case the phrase is warranted! price 647

that 123 single is ethereal and seems to come from somewhere on high ,its stretching it a bit for motown to claim it was a copoff of the Supremes 45 and they have credits on the title now . the confusion set in many years ago at a party when the record was played some herbert claimed it wasnt soul and turned off the music and we nearly came to blows
-
i see he was sued by motown as they thought 123 a bit too similar to 'ask any girl' by the supremes so what do you reckon ? he wrote 123 so thats good enough i reckon ,and with his voice its a classic IMO . so i can sleep easy tonight . Len is in the right camp
-
i have always been confused by old Len ,is he a blue eyed boy or just a pop records singer ?? where does he stand ? no doubt he was lucky with 123 but what if J Radcliffe had done it instead ? or by some other black singer it could have all been so different . he is on the northern compilations so that should settle it right ?
-
i doubt that theyre many around still as you couldnt get the parts to keep em running .i had 1 in late 60s that had a slot for a 45 ,like a CD player but it broke down and couldnt be repaired and was ditched .
