How Do You Define R&b ? Split From Other Thread
Sceneman replied to Sceneman's topic in All About the SOUL
considering all the wrinkly rockers all cut their teeth on hard pumping R&B ,that appears to have gone off the radar ,newbie bands wouldnt have a clue would they about R&B of the late 50s to early 60s. such as that which spawned the super star wrinkly rockers , and who will replace them when theyve hung up their guitars and drums? -

In the early 1950s, the term rhythm and blues was frequently applied to blues records.[3]Starting in the mid-1950s, after this style of music contributed to the development of rock and roll, the term "R&B" became used to refer to music styles that developed from and incorporated electric blues, as well as gospel and soul music. By the 1970s, rhythm and blues was used as a blanket term for soul and funk. In the 1980s, a newer style of R&B developed, becoming known as "Contemporary R&B". -

back in the 60s Pye International fliers used to catagorise R&B as Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry and so on , but over the years its changed its definition .go in a record shop now and R&B racks have a totally different genre of singer and type of music which caters to a larger audience . so you cant really put a definitive genre to the name IMO ... -
how do you define R&B ? tricky ,but i would put Big Boss Man at the top of the list as sung by Eric Burdon in his early days to get the house shaking . next i would mention Respectable as sung by the Yardbirds to get the floor rocking and then Shop Around by Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames sung live .. you could venture over into Elmore James , dust my broom and Cyril davies CountryLine Special for a kicker

paul anderson beat them to it with the book ,it will never be beaten for total recall of information of the period . there is still the film though his book has been delayed again .......

The Singers That Could Have Been Big But Just Missed
Sceneman replied to Sceneman's topic in All About the SOUL
and spooner oldham could have been a lot bigger than he was ,lotsa talent -
ok we have a pretty good list now , but what about the movements that went with the name of the dance ? and how did they disseminate those moves to the club dancers in the days of very little communications ... and who was the originator ? prolly lost to time by now. you could write an encyclopedia on this topic.

one more vote for Linda Jones ...... -
call the names of those with superior quality but due to bad luck or the wrong label or producer or manager failed to make the big time ,and missed out on fame and fortune. not just the obscure labels without top quality in their DNA ,but those who merit special attention and could have been very big ... you need to think about this so as to not clutter it with only one hit wonders on obscure labels . they should be blue blood stars who missed the limelight ..

a pal o mine who has been selling records for ages is grumbling a lot lately as he doesnt do as well now as he used to. he mostly sells at records fairs on the continent ,as thats where the main market is so he says . he does little business in the UK now. he has several large warehouses and lockups full of vinyl and his house has records in every room, so he is not short of stock . a rummage through his mixed piles makes your eyes pop out such is the diversity of his stock ,which he will never sell till his dying day . so he muddles away on fairs and ebay but quite honestly he isnt rich .

cant trust em ,try finding some 45s listed at not too bad prices ,virtually impossible as they sold so few at the time.

When And Where Did Us Imports 1St Appear In The Uk For Sale?
Sceneman replied to Sceneman's topic in All About the SOUL
it wasnt easy to go flying back and forth at that time ,this was in the era of turbo prop airliners that flew slowly and limited luggage allowance.and to afford a ticket you would need to be very wealthy -
When And Where Did Us Imports 1St Appear In The Uk For Sale?
Sceneman replied to Sceneman's topic in All About the SOUL
Transat imports was in a basement in Lisle street and the owner wasnt Guy Stevens , he was an ex record company gent whos name i dont know ,who had a bad drink problem .every saturday he would have fresh suplies of all the good stuff ,which wasnt cheap . this is near leicester square so is prolly the place referred to elsewhere . Guy Stevens used to sell records at the Scene club during the week and i still have some R&R he sold me .he certainly had 1000s of records on his stall at the club . i am not sure where else guy stevens was selling 45s .How he was getting such huge supplies at that time so easily is a mystery ,as it wasn't cheap or easy to fly back and forth across the atlantic then, and he was getting all the best stuff on a regular basis every week.he really had his finger on the pulse ! also there was a barrow near leicester sqare owned by a bloke called Lee around that time that had import albums on his stall. but i still feel that there must have been a big dealer somewhere up north that had plentfull stocks for all the early bands like the Beatles and Animals ,as they were all well familiar with all the names and tunes they copied . they had to get their info from somewhere .i have never heard any of the big names say where they got their records from . -
ok this is a tricky one as someone always knows somewhere where they were ,but actual US soul imports actually on sale in a shop. whereabouts in the UK got the 1st up servings and how ? London ? Liverpool ? Newcastle ? the UK bands needed examples to listen to and must have had a golden source . the UK record companies were very anti imports so must have tried to block any imports by any means at their disposal. my 1st spotting of actual imports of 45s was Transat Imports in Lisle street in Soho ,in around 1964. also Guy Stevens was importing large amounts of imports but mostly Sun and general rock and roll stuff, but he kept the most desirable soul to himself for later issue on Sue.

but were the actual DJs in a studio in Luxembourg? or was there some kind of link up from the UK. very strange times when you look back on them..
-
a very strange time existed back in the 60s when the BBC had a stranglehold on all transmissions in the UK ,so there was started a radio station in Luxemburg specifically to broadcast to the UK and elsewhere in europe as it just wasnt possible to start a independent radio station in the UK. the reception was diabolical but if you had the radio tuned right it was better than nothing ,as that was what existed at that time.zilch ,nada and general twaddle on the airwaves . as i recall a mixture of the early names and tunes were broadcast to the UK.gene chandler, chubby checker, early Tamla and Stateside issues etc this must have been around early 60s . after this period the floating radio stations took over courtesy of a few names who as far as i know have never been given any award for their pioneering business, any info or anecdotes to share ?

Re Records Shops Or Flea Markets Worth Visiting In Houston
Sceneman replied to Whereismy Record's topic in All About the SOUL
i was staying wi my cousins in Houston and they drove me round to all the records shops , and they were astonished and gob smacked that such places existed still ,and theyre in their 50s and were brought up in Houston . as we walked round the shop they were wide eyed in amazement at the old vinyl records on the racks ,so long was it that they had seen and used them . -
