Other dives in soho were the Roaring 20s ,upstairs club very busy ,mostly black patrons, soul club,we couldn’t get in for some reason and the Zambezi club ,never went in them and the freight train mod coffee bar in wardour street north, owned by Chas mCdevit who had a recording studio in the basement Major lance was seen there when he was in town but I didn’t go in there despite working across the road , le macabre ,basement coffee bar ,with coffins as seats ,dark an spooky with a juke box ,playing ,dance on by Kathy Kirby amongst other things,we used to start our night there…now is a apartment flat
  7. I didn’t like the layout of the club and it was garish lighting ,some nights midweek it wasn’t busy, the records played I thought weren’t all that good compared with scene who had all the latest vynil from USA. on Thursdays guy Steven’s sold 45s ,but mostly rockabilly on sun labels..I did buy a few on sun

  12. Lots of top names appeared at the scene in the week but you never knew they would be on till you found out too late ,little Richard and bo diddley and even the Beatles just played there but there was no publicity in the music press . likewise with record releases very little promotion was done and they would be deleted in a few weeks and you never knew till it was too late, and 100sof records were being released every week monkey time came and went and you never Knew till years later, and major lance was always seen around soho.shame
  13. Thinking of my trips to the Flamingo when I could afford it ,as the Many US acts that appeared there were expensive to see em .you name it and they appeared there. But a teens wage was only a few pounds then and had to pay for running a Vespa ,and clothes and records and travel and booze ,there just wasn’t enough t cash to pay for everything inc club fees, and The various clubs meant too much outlay .ricky tik club and crawdaddy club and el partido club ,and eel pie island all needed fees to see the various bands ,like the stones ,animals, who ,yardbirds ,so they had to be rationed.unfortunately. at least the scene was very good value ,for a Guinea to get in , you got good records from guy Steven’s ,then the animals live ,georgie fame ,zoot money ,Graham bond and other bands so it was good value. And the last chance on Sunday morning for 2 hours of soul the marquee was also on the list but was rationed due to lack of funds

  17. A basement coffee bar in a wharehose in whitcombe street which no longer exists ,a jukebox and lots of blocked babbling mods in the small hours,it had steep wooden stairs which many fell down ,I don’t think it was open during the day …the area has been redeveloped a lot

  22. Yes I used to pop in there when doing my rounds from the flamingo, cheap club at 50 pence entrance fee,, but music was not really much cop,the scene club had the best sounds virtue of guy stevens ,it wasn’t a favourite club ,but frequented by hard up teens of the time, most high on speed ,not many dancing
