  1. Realise this may be of limited interst on here but I just got told that Kemdi who recorded the brilliant Still A Dancer on Coco Soul a year or two ago has sadly died at the tender age of 26, apparantly she had struggled with MS and wrote still a dancer from this experience. A great record made all the more poignant by her passing. As I say maybe not of interest to everyone but seems very sad and worthy of mentioning.
  2. I also remember Brian Tilsey doing a "back flip" and half hearted "spin" in a disco in an episode in the mid 70's - it was Granada's "doffing of the cap" to NS in it's prime. link
  3. ...think that Roy Cropper has a few Shrine 45's on the wall of the cafe in amongst his trainspotter stuff.....
  4. lot of 12"s been reissued recently which (without getting into originals or not debate) are excellent, I picked up a few for about a quid each in Fopp, including First Choice-Let No Man Put Asunder, an all time great club record
  5. another good read is Love Saves The Day by Tim Lawrence, its a history of U.S. dance 1970-79. I know its not northern but its great if you Have any interest in the dj's of the time, producers, clubs etc the emergence of house from disco etc...which brings us onto Dereks Salsoul reference....
  6. dom polski club at Bedford, 2 or 3 modern nighters there run by Mick Godfrey. Rock City modern nights were sometimes pretty quiet but were always good, had regulars from Derby coming over, Notts folk and Kevin and Gordon who came nearly every fortnight from Glasgow. Also 'soul frank' from Southampton who got everywhere by train as he worked for BR, always used to wear his BR STAFF t -shirt. Adam did the earlier ones with Arthur and Sam, Robin and Graeme Ellis also did them regularly. At the nighters it was modern downstairs with 60's etc upstairs, Tom Jackson from Scotland played at one or both nighters. Think Dave Raistrick ran the soul nights, Jonathon was manager at Rock City at the time.
  7. How long before some enterprising soul (sic) puts out "Now thats what I call shite, the Worst of Northern Soul", actually its probably out there under a different name. No-one mentioned Peanut Duck yet?
  8. Couple of all time faves in the lists above, Philip Mitchell-World Needs More People, is this also on US Shout 7" ? and Four Tracks-Charade, what value on the Note 7" of this now as far as I'm aware its never been pressed / booted, (though it could have been).
  9. Barry from Hotwaxx put a great piece up on his "on hubert street" site about the joy of buying vinyl a little while ago, it was brilliant. Maybe he can post a link to it or paste it in to here or whatever computer literate people can do. I don't have many CD's myself except of newer things, bought the Deep Soul Treasures volumes and then find myself looking for the vinyl.
  10. there was a 12" of "keep on doin....." on Crazybeat a month or two ago for £12. It was on Kon-Kord though, not sure if its any different, guess its a second issue (?). Remember a couple of other thing being on Kon Kord that came out of Voices from the Shadows at the time.
  11. Get "Try to leave me..." on a contempo 7" with the ok "Baby you sure know how to get to me on the other side", not as nice a label etc I know but its a ballad and I think we can have different rules!!.Just played it and it got me reaching for Lady Margo-Stop By, another classic femme ballad. Also check out Sandy Barber version of Don't you worry baby on Olde World LP, the theme from Wonder Woman is also on the lp no pictures though unfortunately.
  12. 8 tracks on a mini lp, did not include Love is on the way. I'm sure a track or two used to be played at Thorne etc but i've just tracked it and i honestly could'nt tell you which one!
  13. and yeah, jpc. One room, great shout.
  14. Rich , Jocko....I wish I could have put it aswell as you 2 just did. Jocko, I pm'd you.
  15. turn the 7 over for Welcome to my Door, its brilliant, jazzy kind of thing, better than Do What You Can Do, i think so anyway. Got another 7 called Don't Stop thats pretty good too. Did'nt know there was an album, anyone like it ?
  16. joey negro mix on "sugar"........,great shout, one of the best of last year. New York, New Jersey, Baltimore especially knocking out class soulful tunes. On top of that there are some quality european releases too. Also check out some of the stuff on Schema, going into jazzy territory but some quality. Personally I enjoy collecting and listening to this stuff as much as anything else.
  17. Bert Robinson only put out 2 lp's and they are fantastic, got some great ballads on there, first one has a track on it called something like Never Gonna let you go (nothing to do with Rick Astley) and its sublime as i recall. Also check out John Whitehead album I Need Money Bad. Think these were all coming out on Capitol at that time, Beau Williams was another, Willie Collins, HUSH productions i think. Stanley Williams quality, got Coming Back Home on the other side aswell. Just played Jennifer Holliday- Heartstrings, that sounds good, was on first (?) ever cassette derek pearson did with SOS.
  18. Good to see playlist from Berwick, that was a goodweekender as were the next ones Alex Lowes did. Its maybe hard to imagine not having weekenders but I think i'm right in saying that was the frst one to pull in what might be a 'real' soul crowd as opposed to caister pyramids etc. Always remember Billy D playin david porter-i only have eyes for you at a weekender and it completely knocked me out, must have been a scottish sound as they were the only ones dancing to it. Jocko, Byrney i will pm you when i go back to work on monday, assuming i can sus out how to do it. If you write your scotland history Jock i actually used to keep a bit of a diary for a while, i must still have it somewhere, think i'm a bit scared of reading it though. You must have copies of the a4 newsletter that i think Jim used to do!! Martin offered me and another a lift back from the 100 club once with him and 2 others, when we got to the car it only had one front seat, 2 of us were sat doubled up on the floor to Notts, glad of the lift though!
  19. the swan only ran a few times as far as i recall but it was musically bang on, Rob had the foresight at that time to put on andy whitmore (as a modern dj) he was playing sounds that are currently being frothed over to almost empty floors, not one to compromise to his credit. Check out some old copies of shades of soul for reviews. I remember a mate getting a copy of admiral ice off roger banks at a great price when record sales were in the back room, also picked up loveman ronnie stokes there, (i mean bought one not picked up a bloke called ronnie stokes!), Surprised it took so long for Allanton to get a mention too, that was a fantastic niter with a great crowd, a long way but better than anything else on offer at the time. Great period for new discoveries 60's 70's 80's the lot. Billy Davidson guested ast Allanton and other venues at the time and was and still is a great dj. Catch him now playing top quality new release stuff, always on top of things pushing the envelope.
  20. I'm glad we are on the verge of an eighties revival, everyone else is it seems. Think I will watch prices rise then get out me old lists out and kick myself for not buying everything.
  21. check out This Love Is Mine, I Get Lonely Sometimes, on the lp, great album.
  22. jocko, oddly enough I think Andy Whitmore helped me get a copy many years ago and you're dead right Andy was way ahead of the game with his taste and the sets he played which sadly were not frequent enough.
  23. delfonics--hurt so bad
  24. Just been on holiday and while away read Tim Lawrence's history of New York disco in the seventies--Love Saves The Day. Its a great read and prompted me to listen to a few tracks listed in the back of the book, some I aint heard for ages. I just stuckon Moment of Truth-Helplessly, what a great record it is, I had forgotten. I know its an oldie etc etc but i was amazed how good it sounded thoroughly recommend the book
  25. I got a demo in the 'Whoops' section, same back and front
