Bbc Documentary - The Joy Of Disco Bbc4 Friday 02/03/12 21.00
Neiljon31 replied to Mick Sway's topic in All About the SOUL
For what its worth I thought the Joy of Disco was very good and went a little further ,esp in the first 20 mins or so, into its subject than a lot of other things. Anything on mainstream telly will have to give village people a nod, saturday night fever etc a nod to get past the boardroom otherwise its an extreme niche documentary. But the Stonewall interviews, Nicky Siano and Mancuso interviews were tremendous. As has been mentioned twice already, Love Saves The Day by Tim Lawrence is an absolutely belting book and I think the best music book (full stop). The story of disco is as much the story of New York and dragging redundant attitudes into the modern era. What gets me though is 'disco' did not stop when a bunch of ignorants blew up boxes of records in Chicago- it was no longer Bianca Jagger going to a club on a horse- and from that came Paradise Garage, The Warehouse, Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, Detroit techo ,8 ball records, King Street records, Glenn Underground, Strictly Rhythmn......( you can keep going here)--. It was never a nostalgic or regressive thing and still is not today, as we all know its dance music, club music- call it what you will- Although its not a great film at the end of 'The Last Days of Disco' there is a great speech along the lines of 'disco will never die etc' its made in a dead straight way but its tremendous....... just my thoughts -
Great stuff- Lord Marriott on top form as ever. great fella The Gallahads-tremendous stuff, takes me back to Shotts, Mansfield Swan etc when Rob was bosting all over the place- top bloke-- all the best man. Neil

check out the vocals of John Turrell on the very recently released smoove and turrell 'eccentric audio' LP, or on recent Kraak & Smaak LP. Both on vinyl both excellent, alice russell tremendous recent release with mr scruff yes to Kylie Audist, check out 'in a week in a day' on tru thoughts Hidden Jazz Quartet I don't think Plan B etc come into it for me- there are loads and loads of great new sounds without tip toe'ing into this type of contrived pop music which frankly is not aimed at me and I dare say Plan B etc do not want me to like it- its for young folk to dig and draw from what they will with all its influences, contrivance and references and more power to them ! I thought his little speech about mods in 2 button suits etc was a bit embarassing but thats speaking as myself-if I was 13 or so and heard that I would have been digging it I'm sure. No need to compare anything with anything really, especially something 40 odd years apart.

John I have Billy Always selt titled LP from 1982, TAS12114. Doubt I can add anything 45's wise.

The 'large shape' 9ltr ones are great for 45's as has been mentioned on here before..check out local Maplins for them, bargain prices if they stock them. Also... Deconomix storage, its not cheap but worth it, I pushed the boat out on it when I moved a few years ago and worth the investment I think. I like these photo's being posted as I'm a right nosey get !

How was Candi Staton ? -
Absolutley top shout on the Independents Dave, Anyone mentioned Albert Jones ?
-
Oh Dave,....... bang on. I remember crossover before it was crossover I remember crossover when crossover was soul music, before crossover was northern I remember crossover before record labels sold the crossover I remember crossover before the superclubs I remember crossover........... thanks to Blaze, I'm sure they will be ok with my sample
-
I agree with Ian..... enough in what you mention to suggest you do not skip them. Time etc to list is always a factor for what could be little return. Lots of the techno / more ravey stuff might be landfill, but you could always bundle them up into mixed 100's and sell at £25 a shot or something. I bought such lot last year from someone, gave about 85 that were no good to me to a mate to go through and I kept 15 or so which I was ok with for £30 I paid. Curtis Hairston-I Want You All Tonight... is a great record , remember it being one of Derek Pearson's shades of soul tapes in about 1984 or so. Go on keep listing them on here

If you get lucky you might catch a record show at the holiday inn off Columbus Circle neck of the woods. search on line for dates, I went to one maybe 18 months ago which was a little bizarre playin vinyl on a fisher price big bird player but picked up some good 70's albums
-
Me too, I saw that. I only saw the last 45 minutes of the film and cursed myself for not watching it all. Love those street scenes from early 70's... its a world away. I know its a story and a bit soapy but bordeline documentary after all these years. Happened to catch Columbo after which made for a very lazy Sunday afternoon.
