  10. I have recently started dj'ing at our local Soul Night. I used what was left of my record collection (from 77 to 80ish). However I needed to update these records with some newer sounds, prices of some of records I want(ed) are out of my price range not to mention the wife's! But I have bought a number of sounds on re-issued labels such as Grapevine, Kent etc but there is a load on what seem to be replica import labels as well. Are these import re-issues frowned upon? I just want to play classic tunes to keep the dance floor full!

  12. Looks like mine! First time I went (1978) I tore it in half, showed the front cover and got in, 'loaned' the back page to a mate who didn't get in until about 3.30am! Put both pieces in my pocket and thought no more about it until on the coach home next morning and found two soggy bits! They dried naturally on way back to North East and I repaired it with sellotape and used it again and again! Still have it today along with another blue one which I got in 1979 as I thought you had to renew each year, but I never used the "new" card so its almost mint!!
  13. I had shoulder length hair in 77 when I was in the 5th year at school and as wedge hair styles were associated with the northern scene then, I got mine cut that way along with a few mates I had the same style for about ten years!!!
  14. There were loads of people having a kip during the night, some like me not on any illegal substance and some who had over indulged possibly and the the "tourists" but who is to say that we didn't love the place or love the music, and still dig it today?
  15. Nobody said there was coach loads of people kipping at 4am, I said I did it not trying to be to clever just never had the coin to be tempted to try it. When I was going to Wigan I was in what's called 6th form college nowadays and any spare cash went on just getting there plus my fags and a bottle of pop!
  16. Why do people not believe that some of us never took gear? I never had any spare cash for the stuff, was never inclined to start stealing to get some so did without, no I couldn't dance all night and yes used to have a nana nap around 4am but still got the buzz from being part of the scene
  17. I'm one of the fancy dress brigade, in so much as I have a couple of bowling shirts (I danced in bowling shirts at Wigan in 78/79 and liked them then)and loved the placed, didn't like some of the music (love hustle, you baby, Joe 90 et al) but the place was and still is magical and If you attended you will have that greatness imposed on you for life whether you wear bowling shirts or not. (was never a fan of baggy pants even back in the day but wore them coz everyone else did, but was much happier in zoots!!)
  18. never hear Carol & Gerri or The Demures played much these days, which is a real shame. Although Agentsmith did play The Demures at last years Tower weekender as a request for me!!
  19. Already doing that! also have been to Blackpool Tower in November and May and last years Scarborough weekender (my first northern event for 30 years) plus local soul nights, so I've heard loads of new stuff coupled with some stuff on compilation cd's, what I was asking really was for other forum members to list their suggestions of what could now be classed as Classic Oldies in the way we maybe look upon e.g. The Jades or The Superlatives etc from the heyday
  20. Having only returned to the scene(admittedly only the revivalist bit)I've found loads of new stuff which could now be classed as 'oldies' such as Benny Troy's I Wanna give you tomorrow. What other new oldies classic's are there?
  21. Don't think I've played the b-side since the day i bought it in 1979ish, put it on after reading this forum topic and yes a great song but IMHO not as good as the A Side!
  22. Asked Richard Searling and Kev Roberts for both of these at Blackpool on Sunday night, neither had Game Players and Kev said he would play Jackie Moore but in the end didn't!!
  23. How about : - Both Ends Against The Middle - Jackie Moore and Game Players - Dooley Silverspoon
  24. I have been on this forum for only a few months now and it seems that it's cool to slag Wigan off as a dump (yes it was) a place that played 'pop' music and the uber cool would'nt be seen dead in the place, however like a number of responses to this topic I feel that you had to be there to 'get it' Yes there was some dodgy sounds played but come on the place was open for eight years and in that time more soul than 'pop' was played. I only ever attended the oldies nighters due to that fact that at 16/17 we were dependent on some older guys running the bus from County Durham and they liked the oldies. I remember when my mate attended for the first time and instead of going straight into the ballroom at dance floor level we took him up onto the balcony and his first 'sight of the grand old lady' was looking down onto an already full floor grooving to Williams & Watson - To Late the look of wonder on his face was fanastic, and whenever I hear that tune I always remember that moment! So in answer to the topic Citizen P;Other great sounds that I remember from Wigan;Just Brothers - Sliced Tomatoes (a torch sound but played at the oldies all nighters so I'm claiming it for Wigan!), Little Anthony - Better Use your Head, The Demures - Raining Teardrops, Willie Mitchell - The Champion, Joe Hicks - Don't it make you feel funky, Mike Post - Afternoon of the Rhino, The Jades - I where it's at and Dooley Silverspoon - Game players.
  25. With the recent topics relating to pop records and Peggy March etc, I want to ask the question 'What is Soul'? I don't mean Northern especially but soul as a music genre. Let's remember that the massive rare soul sounds we love were released in order for the artist to 'break' the pop charts and make some wonga for said artist(s) I originally felt that soul music had to be sung by Black Americans but when you hear Micheal Macdonald, Dean Parrish etc that view becomes flawed!
