  1. I'm not suggesting the Pharrell record was a premeditated attempt at commercialising Northern Soul. I realise that's not the case. I'm just pointing out that Northern Soul has developed and survived thanks in no small part to the fact that it is (was) very difficult to market. A million selling pop record is about as far from what I understand Northern Soul to be as it's possible to get. Despite my numerous replies here though, I'm actually not that bothered by it. It'll be forgotten soon enough, same as the Daft Punk Zeitgeist/summer of disco bullshit that everyone was getting all excited about recently and went nowhere.
  2. I'm with you. I only came on here to try to work out the connection between this crap and Velvet Hammer. Is it really just that lassie's youtube thing? Really?
  3. Or becoming one of the cool folk.
  4. That's hardly the commercialisation of the scene I'm referring to!
  5. Wasn't there a big hoo-ha about This England back in the day? Surely being "underground" is actually a good thing? One of the things that really attracted me to Northern Soul when I was young was the chance to escape from the squares, and a big part of its continued popularity is (was?) the fact that there was no commercial value to it and so it was never taken out of the hands of the guys who had the passion to dedicate themselves to it, unlike every other "cult" that comes along. It's a crucial part of what makes Northern Soul what it is. Or am I missing something? Having said that, I don't really care if Pharrell has dancers in tacky Wigan Casino fancy dress because, as stated above, it's unlikely anyone even noticed. It's really not worth arguing about. But if this is where the "scene" has got to - 18 year olds with a crush on an overhyped pop performer - then it's all over. That's it. I'm not a moaning old bastard btw. Well, not on this occasion. I agree 100% that young people are a good thing. But not young people who learn about music from commercial TV.
  6. Still looking for a Mercury copy..
  7. Sent you a message btw..
  8. I'm looking for the Mercury 12" with the full mix. The Hot Classics one is just a bootleg.
  9. Thanks Steve. That would be fantastic!
  10. Anyone got one for a *decent* price?
  11. Thanks for the replies, and for the private messages that I've got. Quite a few people are offering me things like the Commodores, T Connection and stuff like that. I'm not really looking for those things (wouldn't be asking on soul source if that's what I was after!). Maybe I should expand on "disco" - think Bileo, King Tutt, Four Below Zero, Willie J, Ramsay & Co, ScarboroughLew Kirton etc etc
  12. Any vinyl format. If it's got strings and hi hats I want it. Hit me with your spares while I have money burning a hole in my paypal account.

  16. Needed in a hurry.. gotta be 12". Thanks
  17. I'm almost certain that tape originally came from you, Pete.
  18. Hahaha.. thanks Nick.
  19. Not sure if the 12" exists myself, but I've seen it reviewed on some site or other, though with no picture as evidence!
  20. Northern again Though that's the Joey Negro remix which is a bit different to my original version..
  21. Jock, you and Kerso are welcome any time mate. Compliments or not. Though the compliments are good too I don't know - Juanita Williams might've been a good choice for a name?
  22. When I say "random" I mean I didn't find the clever name I was frantically searching for, and "The Way You Been Acting Lately" was amongst the records I was looking through. It was a plain enough name to not sound stupid, so I chose that name. So yes, there is a northern connection. (I went through the same process looking for a name for my label; with the clock ticking I found the Rare Gems album and used that name in a hurry. I don't even like that album!). You'll find a northern connection to a lot of things I do.. Secret Sounds album, tracks called Keep The Faith, Magic Touch and Tenner rap for example. Not sure how many people got the tenner rap reference though Re Fajardo - check the reviews page for the answer to that question; https://www.milliondollardisco.com/reviews.html I really want that on 12" btw if anyone's seen such a thing.
  23. I'm really chuffed at the positive feedback on here.. thanks. Will get a tracklist together for the mix as soon as I can.
