  1. anything played out before 1977/8.......apparently........
  2. In answer to the post.......I found it interesting thanks. Any potted history of NS, written in 1000 words and presumably with a prescribed emphasis on one particular club, and then compounded by the broadcaster's copy writers, is bound to have limitations in the amount of detail it can deliver.....and to be worded so as to rekindle memories of reports that Joe Public will recall from the past. Reading it in that context and as a pre-curser for the forthcoming telly program, seems honest enough to me as a generic account.
  3. Not seen any for four weeks or so............winter league next month........get them thermals out
  4. Yes......but when they go out of fashion......hey presto.....back to the skinny-rib polo neck sweater
  5. ....yes realised on reading back today....sorry about that.....inadvertent mental merging of threads due to senility I'm afraid.....hence the urge to defend the elder statesmen of "their" scene. ....If the culprits weren't old wheelers, please feel free to rip the p*ss out of them!! ....don't wear the uniform personally and save my dancing for the appropriate setting and would also have been embarrassed by the display you witnessed
  6. Nothing cooler than watching old wheelers dancing, (nowt wrong with Ike & Tina either come to think about it), the fact that they've been doing it since before some of us had been born makes it totally legitimate from my point of view. Same with Wigan and the anecdotes totally legit and likely to be encompassed in the program as joe public will be able to relate to it more readily. The price of being part of an elitist, underground scene, with a beige fashion sense, largely unremarkable dance style and preoccupation with rarity over quality, is that it is likely to be overshadowed by the more flamboyant and more accessible variation from the previous era. Not wishing to cause offence....point is that the cliched version will make better telly for the majority of the BBC audience.
  7. keep coming back to hear my download of this........keep listening to other stuff......but keep coming back to this.
  8. I have only ever clapped when I see a dancer fall on their arse after a failed attempt to spin
  9. ...............................Fin
  10. ignorance takes many shapes and forms
  11. Not well up on intellectual property law.......but there' a difference between a copy made without the owners consent and a deliberate imitation designed to be "passed off" as an original, the latter being a counterfeit , the former is not a counterfeit.........so there is a significant difference "legally" speaking actually. Can understand people paying full whack for original sounds being p*issed off with people dj'ing with pressings.......but as a kid with no money, I could only afford pressings and treasure the ones I've still got for sentimental reasons......and will play them at home with a clear conscience.
  12. yeah.....that's how I read the question raised in this thread....."greatest" meaning biggest and best in my personal view, too many great vocals on individual tracks so too difficult to narrow it down otherwise.
  13. Otis Redding........Gladys Knight......stick!
  14. Jackie.../Marvin.../Edwin....? Aretha.../Ella..../Millie......? Who can say...?
  15. My only (wildlife) bird story comes from a trip to Liverpool to get my passport renewed the day before we flew off on our hols. Got to Liverpool good and early, parked the car and was walking into the city centre when I heard screaming!! The racket was coming from a bakers' shop.........there was a pigeon inside the shop window, flapping about all over the freshly laid out cream-cakes and stuff. I popped my head round the shop door to see three female assistants in absolute terror, so I said........"how much are your pigeons?" Put paid to that myth about scousers being dead friendly.......never heard women swear that good before!
  16. RIP Bobby
  17. If your point is that the land lord is entitled to allow his regular customers to attend an event staged on his premises, I would agree that of course he and his regulars should be encouraged to do so. The problem is that some visitors can totally ruin an event, not 'cos they aren't into soul music or 'cos they are drinking and having a good time, the problem under discussion is that "drunks" causing bother, taking the piss out of dancers and the music, spoil it for the people who have come for a soul night ......and that's why the poster of the thread is asking why they are allowed in. Never been refused entry to a pub for being a soul boy and never likely to really am I, pretty unlikely scenario really innit? Take it you've got a downer on "local" events and venues too? Certainly comes over that way. Ah well, each to his own.
  18. not seen andre williams on a play list for a long time, nice one
  19. I know........why don't we all adopt a retro dress style so that we are instantly recognizable........"wrong clothes mate...Y'er in" ......trouser width measured at entrance to club?
  20. Remember a couple of the clubs that I really liked in the 90's both turned into "grab a granny" nights after the local non-soul folk twigged on to the late bar and "disco". Both were close to the centre of the town in each case and got to the point where we stopped going, no longer a soul night when dance floor full of d*ck heads and having to go toe to toe in front of the missus (when I always get a b*ll*cking whatever the circumstances). Not seen it much since then to be honest as the places I go are away from town centres and that's the key I think. Plus there's enough of the lads in attendance to put a stop to any bother if it did kick off.
  21. Major achievement especially with the rise of general social media sites.....only started coming on for events as you have the market cornered on that but the other benefits in news, trades, and most of all information about the music itself via the site staff and members is remarkable really. Don't know what I'd do without it now
  22. I'd 'ave been up on my feet mate...........and tell the promoter his resident should get a later slot
