Love Motown, soundtrack to my youth too and my favourite "commercial" stuff.........but the magnitude and diversity of "the rest" wins in my book

Don't know why R&B is looked down on by some, has always had it's place at "soul clubs" to my knowledge......if the track had the right sound & tempo Took my little portable cassette recorder to Bill Honey's in 1976 to tape some of his records from the stuff he used to play at the Wheel and this was right in the middle of James Carr, Shirley Ellis, Soul Sisters, Little Hank etc....... (koko taylor - wang dang doodle) Bill DJ'd at Whitworth Street late 60's, not at the R&B venue in Brazenose Street. If the Wheel is (one of the clubs) where it all started and was R&B first, turning to soul as the latter genre emerged /was christened, its inevitable that there'd be a fusion between the two isn't it? I think that the R&B stuff that got played at NS clubs in the 70's was cherry picked to fit the scene, whereas the current R&B scene is more appreciative of the whole range of R&B 60's cuts. Call it what you like, I like a bit of R&B.....if I can dance to it like I want to

Like a bit of "the Reverand"....when I'm in the mood.....can't put up "take me to the river" cos the version I want is blocked, so here's "for the good times" instead....

I was unsuccesful in getting a freeby from the BBC and appreciate the input on here from folks who went. Hope its a huge success and I reckon most other ordinary punters do, regardless of how they are labelled by some of the superiority complex members on here. As a commercial enterprise, I don't blame the folks behind the project adopting whatever means they feel appropriate to promote it or who they feel should or shouldn't be invited to their promotional events. Looking forward to seeing the film and will take it for what it is regardless. (...As per...a nostalgic oldies fan)

Trees full of finches and hedges full of sparrows on the dog walk last few days and the collared doves and starlings pairing up in the garden...not long for spring to arrive, assuming the weather gets back to normal -
Wow..can't get over how tame this thread is....thought it would've reached "lock down" bitchfest status by now. Watched the show with my 15 year old daughter as she wanted me to see the Arctic Monkeys. She thought the dancers were "cool" but didn't really spot they were NS dancers 'til I brought them to her attention. She didn't know what I meant when I asked "where are Davey Jones, Micky Dolenz, Peter and Mike Nisbit" when AM came on either! Her view of what her mates might think of the NS dancers was "oh....they won't have noticed them" For the record, kids are supposed to be cheeky, so the youngster is excused for rebuking Scal, but Scal often got to hear the next big thing before everybody else 'cos Searling used to give him emidiscs to check out before he broke stuff in!

No mate not heard that radio chanel Plenty of recommendations in the replies on here to keep you going and the Barnsley lads could do worse than to get down to Sheffield City Hall this Saturday three rooms, big names and should be something for everyone
-
nearly had a thrombie trying to dance to that at Davy's on Friday, mind you it was well after midnight when Mopsey played it......and I'd "peaked" at about 9:30

Used to Love the Longfield Suite too and looking forward to the relaunch. City Limits in Sheffield shares the same ethos in so far as it has a great modern room and was relaunched recently (Dec/Jan? last) but on a new quarterly basis, with Sean Chapman slipping in some Latin stuff into his set in the main room. Nice venue and friendly crowd too........and I'm just a punter with no vested interest by the way
-
thanks for clarifying that Steve........another illusion shattered ......hope she has retained her Rochdale accent........eeh by gum
-
............the one's that no one else dances to
-
very nice in deed Mr Swifty.............that's another version that I knew nothing about..........learn something new on here everyday. (hope you don't end up on the wagon 'cos of the Fulham game by the way )
-
loved "my baby loves me" ever since I heard it when I bought "the motown story" as a youth Patti & the Lovelites is the version I want now though...........blinding that mate

Remember going to first Oldies Friday niter at Wigan, our train from Shaw to Manchester was delayed so by the time we got to Vic' station we had missed the last train to Wigan. Thought that was that but my mate Carl managed to talk one of the cabbies lined up outside the station to take us there in his black cab in exchange for Carl's watch, I'd have offered him my ten bob timex but it wouldn't have got us as far as Salford Other than that, missing the last bus home from Sale and having to walk home to Shaw was about the worst journey home from an event for me.

....used to see him on the floor at the revived Wheel when it was at Whitworth Street

Went to that one too....wasn't so enthusiastic about Tavares personally though, (or Evelyn Thomas/ Barbara Pennington either)....wanted to hear Northern and couldn't wait for them to get off!! Each to his own though

.....as I am the only one who's said they were 15/16 years old at Wigan, I take it the above is directed at me? .....I said that "we were just kids to the majority in attendance" so no, you weren't ancient, it was predominately your age group that I remember being there pre-1976. .....that said, the average age was definitely lower after 77/8 from my recollection. I went with my mates from Middleton initially, then later with my mates from Shaw and Oldham, namely Chaddy, Lemmy, Ronnie, Douglas, Mick Malone, Carl Robb, Carl Holden, Pete Wright and Bry Millard. Amongst the younger lads from our end who went regularly post '77 were Neil Horseman and Nidge Worsnip and his late brother Craig (RIP)....and the evergreen Ronnie (Hanley) who never stopped going from start to finish. Not blaggin' you mate. that would be pointless

I was 15 when I started going to Wigan in late 74 and I was 3 years younger than the lads I went with. At that time, there were many older guys there, mid twenties plus, and we were "just kids" to the majority in attendance. There were many there from the Torch and Va Va's but not many from the Wheel to my knowledge. The old Wheelers that I knew from round our way (i.e. Oldham / Rochdale area), had hung their boots up by then and used to tease us with stories of how "the good old days" of their era were the real deal (....sounds familiar?) but always had time to tell tales of their exploits and I managed to tape some records from one or two of their collections. By 76, a lot of the older folk stopped going and more people my age and younger started attending. My recollection of my early days there are that it could be pretty scary at times and there were plenty of crews ("gangsta", "cool" etc were not words in our vocabulary then) who would "roll" (i.e. mug/rob/rip-off) the unwary in the dark corners of the club or in the Gents. That said, it was the place to be and the good times far out-weighed the bad for me and my buddies. What you have to remember is that unless you had the cash to buy records blind, you had to go to wherever the DJ's who had the sounds were playing to hear stuff and there was only word of mouth and B&S or Black Music to find out about stuff, we couldn't glean knowledge and information by the click of a button or buy compilation CD's. There were only a few DJ's on the scene and they were looked up to like super stars in their day. The majority of club goers were either dancers or collectors and the latter obviously had a lot more knowledge about music, although there were also plenty of people who fell into both camps. I went far less between 78/81 when a lot of people my age dropped off but there was a new generation taking over by then who became pioneers in their own right but the club and the scene had evolved or morphed into a different scene really by then in terms of fashion and musical tastes really. Most of my mates left Northern clubs to go onto the funk / jazz funk scene, disillusioned with the way that Wigan went with Soussan, tailor-mades and the commercial exploitation of the scene and were largely unaware that the new generation who were now attending the casino were continuing to discover solid NS records and evolving the rare soul scene in a new era and despite those negative factors. I would add that this is just my personal recollection and I'm sure it will not fit everyone's take on things.
