Yeah, that's the one... Issued in the states on Tamla 274 and on TML11052 in the UK...

Hi all, Am urgently looking for a nice clean copy of this album from a UK seller. It's readily available on the net from the USA, but I'd prefer to avoid the high postage rates. I'm not bothered whether it's on US Tamla, or its UK Tamla Motown equivalent so if you have a spare to move on I'd be grateful for a PM stating price and condition. Thanks in advance... Chip

Hi all, If anyone has one of these to move on I'm looking for a copy Ex/M only please. Can easily find one in the States, but the postage rates more or less double the cost of the record, so am ideally looking for a UK seller - please pm if you can help. Many thanks, Chip...

Much prefer R&B myself simply as I've simply never been interested in the whole precious northen soul "scene" of obsessions with Wigan Casino and other all night venues from the 70's & 80's. It's a mod thing for me and the best events that I've attended cater for all, for example Go Go Children in Bristol. However, I did have a laugh at an event last year where some chap thought it would be good to turn up in a t shirt that bore the somewhat pathetic legend that he'd rather drink his own piss than dance to R&B, but was spotted later throwing some shapes to Dorothy Williams Watchdog - I.R.O.N.Y.

Hello mate, The short answer to your question is, no. However, the point I'm trying to make is not really about NS at all, but UK music as whole within the context of the type of acts who were showcased last night at The Brits. As explained, I really don't think it's a big deal to have some young dancers supporting Pharrell Williams and his pop record - that they are apparently actively involved in NS is great to know, but for me it added bugger all to quite a dull event. This may be because I've come to this music via a slightly different route over time. I am not now, nor ever have been really interested in the whole Wigan, Stoke, 100 Club etc Northern Soul all nighter culture. Please don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not knocking it at all and understand how important these places and events have been to the scene's development and history since the term NS was coined, but R&B and soul music is just one of a number of types of music that I enjoy. For me it was the whole punk thing of the mid-seventies that ignited my imagination, and it was only when that eventually gravitated to the mod culture in the late seventies that R&B and soul music started to grab my attention and interest. At this point I luckily inherited a fantastic record collection from my two much older sisters who were mods during the sixties, but the pure excitement and adrenalin of that whole punk thing is something that I have never replicated since, and is why it pains me to watch such calculated rubbish being thrown at young people at last nights event...

Looks as if I'm in a small minority here, but I can't stand either Pharrell Williams or the poxy song - it's one of those irritating tunes that just, well, grates, really. Before anyone starts getting all precious about it, I realise that many do like it and that's fair enough, but the only two bits that I enjoyed was the Bowie part and Nile Rogers. As for the dancers, yeah, it was alright, but is it really that big a deal? Not for me, I'm afraid. As an indication of the general UK music scene it was as appalling as ever with dilute rubbish served up from Lorde (really?), Disclosure (who?) and One Direction (says it all really) - I'm afraid I can't remember anyone else, although I'm sure there was another young lady and a boy band with all the threat and venom of a cuddley toy in there somewhere. If this really is the best that UK music has to offer it's a poor job. But then again, anyone who is a music fan will know that this isn't the case at all, but The Brits sadly continues to be a self congratulatory back slapping piss-up for the twats who provide Radio One with their staple diet of utter b*llocks. Anyone for the latest creation from DJ Wank Stain Ft MC Knobsock? Nah, didn't think so... There's simply no danger in any of this, nothing to outrage parents or piss-off Fleet Street Journos into a moral crusade. Radio One doesn't seem to ban (it is, however, banned in our house, 6music only) anything anymore and everything's just too bloody cosy, so much so that my teenage daughter who was rabidly looking forward to this, promptly fell asleep inside an hour while attempting to watch, and eventually I succumbed to plugging in the earphones and watching a 1977 gig from The Ramones on Youtube... The yoof of today, when the fuck are they going to wake up and rebel, for christ's sake...

Morning campers, Looking for a clean copy of this having just missed out on a copy that cropped up on a sales list just before Christmas for £25. If you're looking to move one on, please drop me a line. Cheers, Chip

It was widely available as an album track in the UK, but as it doesn't really do it for me, I've had some joy winding up a couple of mates who get all precious about it when I tell 'em I actually prefer the Almond version!

Just been a massive spin on the mod scene for the past few years, Pete, and only issued on 45 in Sweden, apparently...

Great to see Bet You Win by Tyrone Davis in there, killer B side, too! -
Add messrs' Lennon & McCartney to the list of those indebted - without Watch Your Step there would be no I Feel Fine... To think that this incredible slab of R&B was recorded in '61 ffs. There was simply nothing like this in the UK at the time...

Poll: Bbc Culture Show - Northern Soul - Your Take ?
Chippy Minton replied to Mike's topic in All About the SOUL
Sorry, while I fully respect your opinion you've missed my point completely, or perhaps I didn't make it clearly enough in the first place! I'm merely saying that the whole 70's Northern Soul thing held no interest for me at all, and doesn't now either, to be honest. I had friends at that time who regularly travelled to Wigan, Yate etc, but it simply wasn't for me. I did, however, love the whole energy and rebellion associated with the punk thing and while that initially encompassed many of the '76 - '78 bands, it eventually focused in on The Jam, especially. This in turn lead to an interest in the mod movement, which pretty soon became much more important to me and pointed directly to the soul and R&B music associated with that original era, which in turn has also lead me into collecting and enjoying rare records from the late fifties to late sixties. I can assure you that I'm most certainly not holding Weller up as any kind of soul guru at all, and I can fully believe that your mother probably does know more about it that he does as I have two older sisters who are both now in their mid/late sixties and were original mods, who always reckoned he was a bit of a twat really! I'm merely pointing out that for me (and plenty of others from this time, I should add) this band proved to be a catalyst for my interest in soul and R&B via the whole mod ethos which has stayed with me to this day. -
Poll: Bbc Culture Show - Northern Soul - Your Take ?
Chippy Minton replied to Mike's topic in All About the SOUL
I think it needs assessing for what it was - a decent 25 minute introduction to the topic. It was never going to please everyone and was probably never intended to, but it certainly meant well. Everyone has their own take on the music and what actually attracted them to it in the first place. For me, without Punk I would never have been drawn in, as even though I'm certainly old enough to have taken part, I absolutely loathed the whole Wigan Casino thing at the time and would never have entertained going anywhere near it, although mant friends did. It was an obsession with Weller and co that first ignited an interest in the mod thing, which then moved onto the soul and R&B sounds of the late fifties / mid-sixties. This programme was always going to have the Casino at it's core, although I'm glad that the Wheel also got in there, too. Good luck to those that still feel the need to dress in mid seveties baggies and the like, it's part of the whole persona of the era and although it's certainly not for me, as long as they're enjoying themselves surely that's all that matters... -
