Philly International - The Rare & The Good
Steve Plumb replied to Richard's topic in Look At Your Box
Hee hee - everytime young Mr Guarnori disses Elliot Hoffman on TSOP in public, i always jump in and defend him This must be the third or fourth time in as many years! I actually like the tune....................it's totally non-Philly which is why i think it puts folks off BUT i believe (IMHO) it has a certain charm I think the fact Ian Levine stated it was a Modern Soul monster was the issue.....which it clearly is NOT! Hope you're well Mr G Cheers Steve -
Phew....................thankfully (as has been confirmed by pedro) this thread isn't actually talking about The Orwell cos our music policy is one of circa 1968 to 1985 so that gets us off the hook! We fall into that 'third scene' club i.e. not Northern & not the genre pedro is talking about (Modern Soul circa 1996-2007) But many thanks to Jordi Ripolles for the reply. And if anyone has heard Jordi at The Orwell or any of the other quality venues he plays at, you'll know that he is one of MANY quality DJ's currently doing the business at the many thriving 'third scene' venues! Don't wanna hi-jack this thread but another debate on 'third scene' venues (UK wide not just the North West) might be an idea? Cheers Steve Plumb

Washington DC AE7 1134 Miami AE7 1135 Philadelphia AE7 1136 Baltimore AE7 1137 ???? AE7 1138 St Louis AE7 1139 Houston AE7 1140 Chicago AE7 1141 Cincinnati AE7 1142 Cleveland AE7 1143 Dallas AE7 1144 San Francisco AE7 1145 Los Angeles AE7 1146 Detroit ???? NYC Don't know if this exists in this series? Normal NYC Issue is ZS8 3627 i presume the demo is the same - anyone? Didn't put the ZSS/ZSP #'s down as these are mono/stereo and are different on each side i.e. St Louis is ZSS 163644/ZSP 163643 So Detroit & NYC #'s needed PLUS any other edits we've missed? Cheers Steve -

Yeah Steve, it was a private joke.........i once put it into the 'wants' section as a Stang label filler and young Tone remembered. In fact on Friday as me and Sam were 'doing the deal' Tony leant over and said 'aah that's the George Wilson label filler you were looking for' (hee hee) Nice one Tony And yes Steve, both sides are great aren't they .............now, that other Stang label filler by the Young Girls is next Cheers Steve -

Let's clean up the ghetto - Special edits Philadelphia Chicago Baltimore Cincinnati Cleveland Dallas Houston Miami St Louis Washington DC San Francisco LA Detroit NYC For all the anoraks out there, i'm just getting the record numbers of these babies together and will post them up later unless someone beats me to it. Don't have Detroit, Philly, Miami so any help on their numbers would be nice? Any more city edits not on the above list? Cheers Steve -

2 crackers We've bin spinning 'The Trammps - Stop & Think' of late too (both versions) And talking of Anthony White, we're also spinning 'Stop and think it over' (LP only) Sean's right, there is a revival at the mo' and it ain't just on the rarer stuff either. Sam's bin throwing total classics into his sets and on Friday at The Orwell, threw in 'Satisfaction Guaranteed' & 'Let's clean up the Ghetto' (Chicago edit i think?) At the Hilton he played 'Ain't no stopping us now' and 'The love i lost' I think with the success of the recent Tom Moulton & Vince Montana things, folks are digging back to the classic Philly sounds again, which is all good in my book! Cheers Steve -

What a coincidence Mr Rounce! After Sam's little Philly duet on Friday, me and Barry Maleady were talking about playing this 'LP only' cut for a change...........then someone comes along with a Jamaican copy I could have done with this for me write up in the last Shades of Soul too!!!! btw Great to finally meet you at The Orwell Cheers Steve -

Yep, it was Neil Forbes...................I was lucky enough to pick up mulitple copies of 7 or 8 different US 45 edits of 'Let's clean up the ghetto', so when i saw he was doing a Philly Int Special, i sent him a pack of each edit! Since then he has picked up a further 3...........................I'll list all the ones i have and i'll contact him for the extra ones he's picked up and we'll all become LCUTG anoraks Cheers Steve -

Yep, i had two mint copies - i updated the site last week and they went in the first couple of hours!!!!! It's on the 'Let's clean up the ghetto' LP too if anyone who wants it didn't know that? It's a longer mix too! Cheers Steve -

Was just gonna offer me services but see you're sorted B side is a fookin killer dancer too! Biggie for the future methinks Cheers Steve -
Thanks for that Nev Down to the last couple now and these are all Ex but have a slight warp which doesn't affect play. Still a bargain at £40 though! In fact i paid £150 for it meself about 4-5 years ago!!!!!! Same with the Marva W Taylor - I paid £200 for that about 7-8 years ago - got an original Ex copy on site at £40!!! The 45's listed as 'Hidden Gems' always sell well too..........that's cos they are what they say on the tin btw I had intended selling more Deep Soul, Sweet Soul & Funk 45's on the site BUT no one wants the ones that are already up there, so I tend to go with the quality 70's Modern & Crossover with smatterings of Northern (bit like The Orwell really ) Cheers Steve

www.soulmusic.co.uk Just a quick note to let you know that another batch of 45's have just been added to the site! They can be found in all SIX sales sections of the site including 'New Stuff', 'Rarities' & 'Front Page Focus' As usual, last month's updates saw an absolute blitz of 'SOLD' signs going up on many of the newly listed 45's! There's a whole bunch of brilliant stuff up there BUT numbers are limited on many of the 45's so you need to get in straight away or risk missing out!!!! Don't forget to check the older stuff as many of the prices have been tweaked and there are definitely some hidden gems in there at killer prices!!!! Go on, have a look............you know you want to :-) Cheers Steve Plumb 24th January 2007

Cannae believe ya missed this Seany baby Top quality CD of his outtakes from his Malaco days. Released after his death. He apparently recorded a few extra tracks on every LP session at Malaco, which came out as a compilation after he died. It's a cracking version of 'Midnight mood' and one that got plays at the time at Yarmouth, Orwell etc I'll cd-r it for ya mate and bring it to Yarmouth if you want.......although knowing you, you'll be on the case for the original................about now Cheers Steve

Charlie boy - think i've a spare US 12" - want me to add it to the pile ? PLMK by PM Steve

Great thread Some great quotes - love Simon's initial post and love Sean's 'i bought 60's in the 60's....' post - again, showing the quality of Soul Source and all who sail in her Not going to repeat meself, as i've mentioned this on various forums and gone into (real) print about the 'third scene' BUT surely most of the records mentioned here are candidates for that scene? Thus they must have a chance of being played in 2007! I think maybe a 'late 80's/90's' oldies scene will come along as a '4th scene' in years to come but most of the late 70's/early 80's stuff listed here can be heard (albeit infrequently for a few of them) at '3rd scene' venues? Just been pulling 70's & 80's LP tracks out for a CD swap (from another thread) and at least half a dozen tunes have gone into my 'must play this at The Orwell this year' pile!!!! Just an observation.....although i'll just go get me hard hat for any sarky replies that follow Cheers Steve
