Who's Your Best Mate On The Uk Soul Scene?
Wow, some blasts from the past there. How many of them still go anywhere ? I think the last time I saw Gerry he had killer rabbits living in his front room in Crewe. (What a nutter!)

Leicester Oddfellows
The downstairs room always opened later than the main room as they needed to kick out the clubbers and sweep up. It usually started around 1 am and closed at around 7. I dont remember it ever being a modern room solely. One of the lists I ve got of djs on the night (peeled off the wall so I could work out that nights movements) shows Adam, Brian,Robin,Alan Walls, Dave E, Keb and Brian in the doownstairs room. And Brian, Gary Rushbrook,DaveE, Keb, Adam, Tony Clayton,Chris King and Ali upstairs. We expected dj line ups like this everytime...how spoilt were we????????????

Unknown Club Mid 80s? Name The Faces
I think the last time I saw Nick properly was when he had to leave Higham after being beaten up by his Asian girlfriends family. What a great lad! Is that Phil Worell ...up the corner?

Events In Northants
As requested by Len Dopson on another thread I ve cut and pasted his message to start this new one:- With that in mind, also the shear confusion of so many events locally I am restarting my newsletter 'Northern News' starting with a listing of local events so we all know what's on just by looking at one piece of paper. In doing this we will see how many events are actually on. I hope soon a few will close and leave room for the established ones and maybe a couple of the new ones. I am sticking to my guns here ref 'SILKS' If it's not what people want then I shall close that to leave room for what's left. I just hope what is left are quality nights. The following are the areas I am putting in the listing. Can all the promoters who would like to be included please 'e' mail me a dates list like the example below to len@ldfabrications.co.uk Example - Sat 25th Aug - 'SILKS' - Wellingborough No other info needed as people will see the flyers. These are the areas I'm including - Wellingborough. Kettering. Rushden,. Rothwell. Bedford. Market Harborough. Peterborough. St Ives. Leicester. Cambridge. *Tell me if I have left any area out that should be included* Can someone please cut, paste and post this somewhere on soul-source where more people will see it as I'm cr*p with computers

a Great' But You Cant Stand Them
I would rather listen to really bad soul music than any C and W or Rock opera. I shared a house in the middle of nowhere with a girl who loved Meatloaf and Chris De Burgh. It s was torture! Pity the poor folks on list who have to endure radio or piped music all day every day in their workplace. Esther Phillips voice is horrible imho

"my Collar Gets A Little Bit Tighter, My Eyes Get A Little Bit Brighter"
Each to their own but for me CJ is one of the best male vocalists you can get, but then I like great big vocals over blowsy orchestration. The first time I heard hand it over I thought I d died and gone to heaven. I love em all and it was great to see him do Girls Girls Girls live at Northampton, it was absolute class. x

Modern Soul
It s probably just me honey but I dont think modern soul is a useful description for 20 or 30 year old records. So I prefer 70 s soul, 80 s soul etc. Most decades show a significant shift in instrumentation and styles so as a form of classification that would be my preference. Modern soul to me is the new stuff coming out from wonderful soul artists like Rahsaan Patterson, Maysa Leak and Phil Perry. Shall I get my tin hat?
