  1. Steve The trouble is that ...the friends arent there any more. You are really unlikely to see many people you know unless they come out for a revival night! I went up the road for a local do on saturday, out in my home town and knew a handful of people. I dont know these people because (I assume) they are recent returnees, people that went to the local do in the 70 s and have found that they can come out for a bit of a dance. There is no problem with that really but they are happy to listen to any old pile of .... The scene of our youths was built on the music, there was respect for the people sourcing and playing new music and it made things exciting. Coming home after hearing a record for the first time, spending the weekend with brilliant people etc etc was what made the travelling and grotty venues so special. On saturday Guy Hennigan and Bob from Newark turned up at this local soul do....now I think that everyone should know who Guy is and his place in the history of all things soul but then I was a TOTW groupie. I would guess that most of the people in the venue would have had no idea who he is...and that makes me sad. Bless the Dj who kept " taking us back to Stafford", it was lovely to see Rich, Bob and Guy all muttering under their breaths ( "wigan actually...1978")because they really care that each record has it s history. And you know that they care that if ,for example, that record was played by Adey at the 100 club first he should get the kudos for it....that to me describes the split in the scene more than anything else. I had a bit of a rant last year at a local dj who accused me of caring about soul music too much " cos its just of a bit of a laugh really". It makes me want to stay home and listen to decent music in excellent company, which is mostly what we do! I promise you that after three nights out listening to bad dj s playing terrible records you would get back on the plane,Or travel to the other side of the country, passing thirty soul nights on the way to get to a line up that can offer something worth listening too.
  2. Thanks Derek.... it s good to share. x
  3. Oh Tony.....you made me speechless! He/ she could of bought everything M G made on redigitalised reissue cd s for perfect quality sound and listened to them constantly while repeating the mantra Marvin Gaye is wonderful. You are a bad man catriona (listening to St Etienne The Trip for Marvin's Symphony .......lovely!!!!!!!!!)
  4. I havent got my work vs rest of the life ratio worked out very well but if I did I would spend all my time in the North West...you lucky people have a regular chance to listen to the Orwell crew and a whole heap of the best dj s in the country. If I can add Adam and Steve Guarnori...that d be perfect!
  5. On now and sounding just wonderful. What a treat to hear a jock who understands that you can play something different on the radio! Jacko is the guvnor. x
  6. Adam played If you really love me at the end of Andy ( kid mohair) and Gina s wedding soul night and it went down a karaoke treat! Its just the ultimate in feel good music.......now who said shredder? Tut tut....I feel a soap box moment coming on
  7. Really looking forward to listening to Steve on the radio again. His taste and knowledge are amazing. ( And he has the face for it !!!!!!!) x
  8. Absolutely brilliant. Who are they and did they win?

  10. Pete Shirley was out with Mick and Mary at Desborough last month. I think he s still in Nottingham. T x
  11. I consider myself lucky enough to have seen Levert supporting the O'Jays at Hammersmith Odeon, in the mid 80s. From where I was sitting I could see Eddie standing side stage, obviously proud of his boy and really digging the great music he, his brother and cousin were making. He had every right to be proud, too The album that Eddie and Gerald made together is about as good as modern soul music got in the late 90s...
  12. Mick and Mary still live in Rothwell where he has a record business. They get out and about to local do s. Lovely lovely people.
  13. Just seen most of them on a sales page Steve, I ll have a quick look and pm you Catriona x
  14. I do know what you mean but I think it was the full package that I fell in love with. I can remember standing up stairs at Oddfellows watching my brother Chas, Stevie Holland, Mudd and all the local lot from Harborough dancing to Seven Souls and thinking I love this. Now I go out and wonder why I m there!!!!!!!!!!!!! More to do with being bored with the same old music than anything else BUT I do miss the great people that I used to travel with. We can all listen to our favourite tunes at home but it doesnt have that vibe does it of hearing it loud at 3 in the morning surrounded by your mates?
  15. I thought you were an across the board man Sean, cant you manage a seven minute spin? Hardly worth being dusted off...for three minutes. x

  18. Me too. I blame that Robin Salter,(even tho its probably not his fault). I played it at a disco thing in a local club recently and they didnt know it x
  19. Sorry about that love. Are these your car keys in my fruit bowl ? xxxx
  20. Can I make you an unreasonable offer ? We ll give you a tenner for the lot xxxxx
  21. Well said that man. I live with teenagers so have had an excellent musical education over the last two years . We somehow manage to blend the Dead Kennedys, Gwar, Stranglers etc with soul and jazz and a little bit of house in the house Tune of the day Audio Bullies Face in a cloud Everyone likes it here. x
  22. Mixmag magazine have an article on Trainspotters delight- The record hunters holy grail in this month. Nice bit about Robin Salter and Terry Callier s Dont want to see myself in there and of course Frank Wilson as well as Rare Pleasure and Willie Hutch. The bit that made me lol was this :- R Dean Taylor There s a Ghost In My house. There are music fans and there are record collectors, and then there are Northern soul collectors, the Al -Queda of vinyl hounds, hardliners who think nothing of sending their children up chimneys in order to finance a particularly rare Ric Tic 45. For about six weeks in the early 70 s this was the most collectable record in britain. Ian Levine , who went on to produce Take That had the only copy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  23. Nah me neither...would nt catch me sitting on the stairs Love that clip of Pete...so many people were convinced that their interview would be used and we didnt know till it went out.
