  1. Same producers credited on both the Stoppers and Roddie Joy...there's your connection right there. Best, Mark
  2. Is it OK to play it off the Chameleon album if you can't afford the 45? Best, Mark
  3. Ooh boy, where do I start here? I'm beginning to suspect that I lost a box of 'C' 45's when I moved out of my house of 45 years and into an apartment. This box had all the Chairmen of the Board and Gene Chandler singles (and no, I didn't, nor have I ever, have "Mr. Big Shot" or "I Can Take Care of Myself") in it, but more importantly, had two Casualeers 45s (including a Roulette copy of "Dance, Dance, Dance"...I'd hate to tell you all how much I paid for it, 'cause you'd kill me!), Celestrals "Chain Reaction" (black RCA) and Charts "Desiree", all of which would look good in the box of an aspiring DJ like myself. A lot of other stuff I can't find...many of my Amy/Mala/Bell soul 45s, including a promo of Chris Morgan, Sunlovers "You'll Never Make the Grade" (somewhat beat, but I actually had a trade offer for it...if I could only find the damn record), Williams and Watson "Too Late", Kim Weston "I'm Still Loving You" on British Tamla Motown, a promo of "Ain't There Something Money Can't Buy" by Young-Holt Unlimited, and maybe a couple of others. I'm in the process (very lengthy) of putting all my 45s in absolute alpha order...I'm hoping some of these just got put in the wrong box and I can get them sorted properly. Best, Mark
  4. Any of you lot going to this event? I will be there...in fact, I'm in PA. right now! Best, Mark
  5. Great article! We hear so much about Detroit and Chicago acts...I'm glad we get to hear about an L.A. act for a change! Best, Mark
  6. Are you sorted on this? I have a VG+/M- copy if you still need one. Best, Mark
  7. Mello Souls, with Elbie Parker a close second. Best, Mark
  8. Gail Wynters a/k/a Bunny Shivel. Best, Mark
  9. It shouldn't come as a surprise that Pet Clark did a version of Call Me....after all, it was written by her manager, Tony Hatch. Best, Mark
  10. Just to update you...I'm now certain it's in my brother's basement, where the majority of my 45's are. I now recall that I almost brought it home with me while trolling for singles for my DJ box. I just have to get out to his place (I live on the east side of Cleveland, he lives on the west side, and it's hard to do that during the week). I'll try and take care of it this weekend. Obviously, if you get another offer, go with that, but I'll still go and fish out the record if you still need it. Best, Mark
  11. If you still need one, I have a spare I'm willing to trade. Best, Mark
  12. Deadbeats a/k/a Dynamic Deadbeats Band, out of Virginia. They traveled to Philly to cut their single as the Deadbeats, which got issued on the Strata label. Best, Mark
  13. Tim Rose, normally known as a folk singer, who cut "I've Got a Loneliness". Best, Mark
  14. Don't know if he's in this pic, but supposedly one of the guys in the British Walkers was the late Roy Buchanan, who went on to be an extraordinary blues guitarist and singer. Best, Mark
  15. I have one, don't know if it's here at my apartment or in my brother's basement, but let me look around. Best, Mark
  16. Some folks that haven't gotten mentioned yet... Turley Richards Lance Rentzel (he made a record, but his main claim to fame was as a star receiver with the L.A. Rams football team. His promising career was shot to hell with one bad moment...he exposed himself to a little girl while at a traffic stop. Her dad was a powerful L.A. lawyer who brought the wrath of God down on him. His football career ended just like that) Tommy Good Debbie Dean The Memphis Nomads (they sure as hell sound white!) The Gentrys The Other Ones Charlie McCoy (cut that song "My Baby's Back Again", but is best-known as one of Nashville's top session men. He made a number of albums showcasing his harmonica playing in the '70's) Narvel Felts The Selective Service, from right here in Cleveland! Kenny Chandler Barnaby Bye Jerry and the Uniques ("Yes He Will") The Uniques from Louisiana, that did "Not Too Long Ago". Lead singer Joe Stampley went on to bigger success as a country artist. Bill Bush Dan Penn Best, Mark
  17. Unfortunately, no room to dance, as the brunch tables take up all the room. When they have regular DJ gigs there, there's plenty of room to dance, but they haven't had a regular gig in a while. Best, Mark
  18. Yep...I have to assemble a box of about 100 45's or so each time. It takes a little time...I swap out a lot of stuff each time and put different things in, plus I have everything in the box in alpha order by artist. Best, Mark

  20. l don't have the album here with me, but if I recall correctly, the Little Mr. Lee track was "Will My Baby Come Back?"...that IS on a 45, on Sure Shot, with the great "Party Time" on the flip. Best, Mark
  21. Still have to type up the one from this past Sunday, but I will get around to it and have it posted! Best, Mark
  22. While I DJ their Sunday brunch (one of many different DJ's they've had there...as I told one of the customers, if you come back next week, someone else will be there with different music), it's not so much a brunch place as it is a concert hall. It's been voted as the best concert club in the city by Scene Magazine here in Cleveland (BTW, Scene did an excellent cover story on the Way Out label around the time the Way Out CD was released)...they usually have two concerts going at once, one in the tavern (where the brunch is held) and one in the larger ballroom. I've seen Bettye LaVette twice there, Little Charles Walker with his current act, Lee Fields, the Hesitations, Eli 'Paperboy' Reed, Clarence 'Blowfly' Reid (when I got his autograph afterward, I mentioned I was after a copy of I'm Your Yes Man...he took my phone number, but I have no idea whether he ever called me, as I changed carriers shortly thereafter and was obliged to change the number), and many other acts that aren't soul. Best, Mark
  23. OK...so today at my occasional DJ gig at the Beachland, I got another 'odd' request...evidently, people aren't quite listening to what I'm spinning, because a guy asked me if I had any Robert Gordon or Link Wray. I told him that while I do like rockabilly, those artists don't fit in with what I'm playing. This brings about a question...have there been any rockabilly tracks that have been spun at Mod events? I know Gordon's music is a little too 'recent', but there probably is a track by Wray or some other '50's guy that may work? I want to accommodate folks who come to me with 'weird' requests such as this, but I also want to stay within the 'Northern/Mod' framework that I'm comfortable in. Thanks in advance. Best, Mark
  24. I buy things I like--simple as that. I was happy as hell to finally land a Tymes on Winchester and a Lou Courtney "If the Shoe Fits", both not major rarities, I know, but both great records that seemed to elude me. Other than that...well, hell, if I see something interesting fairly cheap, I'll grab it, no matter what. I've no problem playing garage, Latin, girl groups, when I spin. Whatever works!! Best, Mark
  25. Yep...I already had a Strangeloves, but it's a messy copy. Got an upgrade, so I can spin it at my gig this Sunday morning. Embers was a nice pickup. If it had been their Atlantic single, I would've needed CPR! Oddly enough, the big deal for me was that Tymes record...I've wanted one for a while, and now I got it!! Best, Mark
