How Do We Get Young Djs Spots St Events?
Northernjordan replied to Put herald's topic in All About the SOUL
I think my set sits in the middle ground, theres some out right classics that everyones heard before and some under played gems in there. It's completely different reading a playlist sat at a computer, to actually hearing out loud! I wouldn't suggest that I could compete with the top DJs, I know I cant. But, what I do do is for a bit of fun and it noramlly works. I played a set in a local contempary bar recently mainly 70's stuff to a young audience. That went down really well... But, I'm just learning, having a bit of fun and out to enjoy the music. -
How Do We Get Young Djs Spots St Events?

I'm 20 and do occasionally DJ, but I do so for fun every now and again. I do wonder sometimes if I could get more sets out and about at various venues, but to be honest I've never really pushed myself to promoters and have just done sets when invited to do so. I like to think I can play a decent set with good variety to suit venues. Heres an example set list from when I played at the BB, it was very well recieved. The Vibrations - I Took An Overdose The Stagemasters - Baby I'm Here Just To Love You Wade Flemmons - Jeanette The Phrophets - I Got The Fever Buddy McKnight - Everytime Pt1 The Dealers - You Got It Lenis Guess - Just Ask Me Los Canarious - Get On Your Knees Darrow Fletcher - What Good Am I Without You The Isley Brothers - Why When The Love Is Gone Joe Simon - Just Like Yesterday Dee Dee Sharp - What Kind Of Lady Invictus - New Babe The Players - Get Right Bobby Patterson & The Mustangs - Sock Some Lovin At Me Five Stairsteps & Cubie - Little Young Lover The Fascinations - The Girls Are Out To Get You Thersa Lindsey - Gotta Find A Way The Parliaments - Dont Be Sore At Me The Invincibles - That Love Of Mine Bob Brady & The Con Chords - Everybody's Goin' To The Lovin The Showstoppers - What Can A Man Do The Radiants - Hold On The Exits - Youve Got To Have Money Jo Armistead - Feel An Urge Coming On The Dell's - Wear It On Our Faces Since then my collection has grown and I've picked up some good tunes: Skull Snaps - My Hang Up Is You Master Four - Love From The Far Far East Compliments - Beware, Beware Fred Paris - I'll Be Hanging On Falcons - I'm A Fool I Must Love You The Furys - Dream etc etc obviously theres too many tracks to list... I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but some young uns get a bit too hung up on the DJing and their "status" on the scene. Some young guys have amazing collections and are truly forward thinking, others arent. I've said it before I just can't see the point in the latter. I do the odd set for fun, but scooters are my main passion and they get prioritised. -
I've only ever bought one soul pack, it was from the states about a year back. 20 singles, and about 70% were top class! IT was about £20 posted and no one else made a bid! Off the top of my head there was; Etta James - Breaking Point Parliamnets - I can Feel The Ice Melting Parliaments - Dont be Sore At Me Jackie Wilson - New Bread Jackie Wilsin - Who Who Song Theresa Lindsey - Gotta Find Away Montcalaires - Unwanted Love WD Quite a few other ones but I cant recall them without having my records in front on me...

Why has the term "Young Guns" bcome the term to call the young baggy trousers brigade? We are a scooter club for under 25s and the mainstay of the club are normal lads and lasses, who are probably more caving of this time warp mentality than most on here... We hate it

Can anyone help me pleas, it's my girlfriends 18th and she really does love this song! She would be over the moon with a copy for her birthday, however money is tight from my point of view so can anyone part with a copy for a good price? I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me here Thanks Jordan

Just to clarify, I am not Jordan WILSON of the WYS. I am Jordan LEWIS of the Young Guns SC. I dont know if people confuse my identity...? I only get to a smattering of soul events and occasionally spin some tunes, however, I am rallying mosts weekends of the year and dancing my heart out at rallies. https://youngguns.team-talk.net/

Thats what I'm trying to say, the former deserve some praise, the latter dont IMO...

I think you've got the wrong end of the stick a little there, I'm not suggesting that records should be given as a matter of course to any young Tom, Dick or Harry. However, if theres someone you know personally and you are impressed by their enthusiasm for collecting you might want to share the fun a little with them? A lot of you older guys have collections stretching into the thousands and I'm sure you've all got a few duplicates kicking about... No harm in passing some of them on surely? Even I've done that... I'm not suggesting an original FW more like a Four Tops...

I'm 20 and pretty much have the same opinion as you, why does simply being young on an aging scene give you such levels of praise? I just find it all gets a bit boring and wears thin... Yes, some encouragment is great, a few free 45s to help you get into collecting or some tips on where to find good sounds is all thats needed. However, young people being fairly uncommon on the scene seem to have a rediculous ammount of praise lauded upon them. They have their egos messaged and fed, and they end up feeling they are some how better than most and they know far more than they do... When in reality, they offer nothing new, different or progressive playing the same tunes. They end up looking like some parody 70s NS follower, which just isnt right in the 21st centuary. On the other hand, there are young people who do get it right and have a good approach. (I wouldn't say I fit into either of those camps, as I'm far more involved with the scooter scene).

Do You Feel Sorry For Northern Soul Collectors Starting Out
Northernjordan replied to Wiganer1's topic in All About the SOUL
I suppose, theres definitely less costs when you are young especially regarding running a home... However, most of you will have a collectiosn, and its bit like money make money. You have a lot of tunes that you can sell/swap according to your current tastes. To be fair though, unless you are very wealthy collecting records is a tough game! However, its great fun and very rewarding when you finally get the tunes you want! -

Yeah, I was only really meaning in monetary terms. I agree it's definitely easy now, but, you can still make mistakes when you start out. Theres stuff on Ebay that are definitely on the vague side, with almost identical lables! -

With inflation and what not, I think people will be surprised at how comparable prices actually are from now and then. Obviously the demand of a record has an influence in the price, and that can go up and down. But thats the same with any collectable commodity... One example are Lambrettas, I seem to remember the price of a new TV200 or 175 in the 60scant remember exactly was around 116 pound, and some one put that into an inflation calculator... And it came back with a value very similar to the current market value of the scooters. Pretty much no 18 year olds would have been able to afford one out right in the 60s, just like no 18 year old can really afford one now. So, these originals at 75 quid a pop, yes they arent cheap but when they were say 2-3 quid in the 80s I bet your incomes wouldn't have allowed to buy a whole collections worth in a month? Just like my income as a young collector allows me to buy 2-4 cheapies a month... The difference is now for you guys, your middle agaed, generally with a better income and a collection already built up. -
I regularly ride 300 or so miles each way for scooter rallies on an old Lambretta... This year I'm planning in riding to Switzerland and back!

Cheers guys, better get my thinking cap on... and go through my box!

I would like a bash to be fair, I think it could be a great way to hear some new tunes. However, being young I wonder if my CD would be high enough quality... Would probably base it on my own collection and that would mean lots of cheapies... Would this be OK? Jordan

They look like some swings to me? On the pictures, I'm not a fan of 70s northern soul attire at the best of time, but dear lord the kids in the earlier pictures cant be hard core northern soul followers can they?!?

The Older I Get The More New Stuff I Want To Hear

Is the flip Joey? (can't see the link) bloody fantastic track! Love it! -
Been on several at scooter rallies, and think they are great. You can go from some 90's house dance to belting out Jilted John or something random... Always hilarious!

Well there seems to have been a few post on this thread stating that boots and re-issues are needed to keep young people interested, just replying to those people
