Other than Easy Street and Sad September, the LP's pretty much mor, made up of standards like 'yesterday' etc.
-
From the mgm LP, ' How Do You Say I Don't Love You Anymore?' Don't think it ever came out on 45.

It's not The Spotniks is it?

Not so much justifying... I think I've said before that I'll buy what I want when I want...posted more in the interest of debate regarding some imagined chasm between buying 'classics' and 'unknowns'. Oops...there I go again...justifying

sepia copy at 800 on arctic souls recent list [at least 300 too much imo although it is quite a hard record to find]. Googa mooga copy [about 40 in pic sleeve] at a ridiculous one hundred and fifty quid on manships.
-
Oh well...as i'm the bloke that bought the record here's my reasoning for said purchase. Obviously i like the record and remember just missing it when 30 quid or less many moons ago. When prices on Idkay went daft [for a fairly common record] Idkht seemed to go up in price on it's coat tails, settling in at 150, which i personally think is too expensive. Cheapest i've seen it in recent years is 100 notes, so 75 seemed a fair price and i snapped it up. As regards Brett's statements about developing a chasm between the "Progressive" and the "Ultra Revivalist" movements although i'm an armchair soulie when i do [rarely] go out I prefer to hear stuff that i haven't heard before but as a collector i have bought and continue to buy classics as well as semi knowns and newies. Recent living room spins have included the endeavors, contacts, isonics and tomorrow's men [thanks Christian] as well as Marie knight and Dean Parrish [my musicor revivalist phase] and i would like copies of the cashmeres and gil blanding but am not willing to pay the 1500 and 150 quid you can buy them for any day of the week on the net so i wouldn't say i personally do a lot of clutching with bloody and swollen hands. Having said all that, if the wife ever finds out how much i do spend on records [rather than them all being trades which is what i tell her ] then i'll almost certainly end up with a bloody and swollen nose!

That's pretty poor...always a mistake letting the local gang sing backing vocals on your record...no matter how much they threaten to kick your head in [although the lead singer sounds like they've already battered him!] Several 45's have tortured my lugholes with poor production/engineering. One that immediately springs to mind is The Captions on Millage, the band give 100% on a rockin stormer only to have mr. misery behind the mixing desk totally neuter it with his underwater recording technique, he then proceeds to foul up again by smothering the beautiful slowie on the flip with an aural pillow. The absolute worst of its' kind has got to be The Del Chords on the less than accurately named 'Mr. Genius' imprint. 'Your Mommy Lied To Your Daddy' is a record from the twilight zone of lo-fi nightmares. This is a real shame as it's a decent song let down by a turgid sonic coating which is so bad you think your hearing's packed in. Bizarrely the engineer get's credited in great big letters on the label, maybe it was the band's way of pointing the finger of blame!? Oh...and whoever engineered Nomad Woman on Golden Hit should've been sacked...or was that a pressing flaw?

I don't know whether the LP was a boot or not but according to an old 'shades' review 'the whole set up was a money scam by two doctors.' There's a great James Conwell LP on the same label which is dated as a 1977 release [orig cuts tho'], easier to find than Frank Dell I think [ie: I've seen it a couple of times so not exactly scientific fact.] The jimmy conwell was reished on cd a few years back [fiver in berwick st.] so maybe frank dell was too. The valise 45 went over the top on ebay, I'd say £200 max for red label , 50 - 75 less if your luck's running good [ and i'm not just saying that cos i'm after a copy myself!] Half that [at most] for the LP would be fair i reckon, then again we live in a world where some people believe billy hambric on drum will sell for 300 notes, so who knows?

An excellent website for those of us interested in ja covers of soul tunes is www.skaville.de which lists exactly that along with ja interpretations of jazz, latin and r&b records. A few from my collection not mentioned earlier inc: Prince Buster - Johnny Dollar [Garnett Mimms 'Quiet Place'] Silvertones - He will break your heart [Jerry Butler] Sensations - Lonely Lover [Temps] Ken Boothe - Keep Me Hanging On [supremes] Fairly predictable cover choices I suppose but when you look at the depth and variety of tunes done by ja artists from 1960 onwards, you really get an insight into what serious collectors the early soundmen were, getting jobs in the u.s just to source lesser known sides etc. Skaville.de also lists ja records done in a soul style and this got me to thinking that rocksteady pack b sides might be a largely untapped resource for records with northern dancefloor/collector appeal. There's the well known Glenn Miller tune on Dr. Bird of course and I seem to remember Pete having a ja c/u in his mag [sonya Kaye - Black Cat c/u?] In my opinion The Diplomats - Strong Man [Caltone] and The Gaylettes - That Lonely Feeling [Merritone/Island] could appeal to some but does anyone know of anymore? It's got to be a better source of potential killers than Bobby Rydell soundalikes and Disco Tex outtakes ain't it!
-
I'm not entirely convinced that playing 'Please Mister Postman' to a predominantly hardcore techno crowd would be the best opening move you could make. If you do that I'd suggest having 'Frantic Escape' cued up as your follow on tune. Seriously, you've set yourself a pretty difficult task and your best bet is probably a set of relentless pounders. Good luck with it btw.

What's The Best Unissued Track Ever Discovered?
Exustrek replied to Pete S's topic in All About the SOUL
Loads of good stuff on this thread but i'm surprised no ones mentioned Candle In My Window, wasn't that unissued? Both sides good as well. I liked Ronnie Walker's more sober sounding version of Trouble that came out a while back too and whilst it's not necessarily the best unissued Motown track, I love the instrumental break in I've Got To Get Away by Tommy Good. -
Given that I haven't got a clue what people mean when they go on about ' Real Soul' then no I'm probably not a true fan of whatever genre that might be. If what you're talking about is miserable slowies sung by people who sound like they're gargling broken glass then generally I don't like them, so my bones must be filled with unreal soul and that's good enough for me.
