  5. Some guy from Bristol showed me Shazam in 2001 or so at a do where Ady was playing (In the Soul Desert that was Bristol) Unfortunately noone that night played a cover up but I rushed home, got out me live tapes of the 100 Club from way back, fast fowarded through (remember that - before 'instant click' CD's..............founds Butch's Temptones cover up... ....and....NOTHING - DAMN
  6. The first tune that got me investigating Soul music was "Back In My Arms Again" - which The Jam did live and the b side of The Modern World. That got me 'investigating' Soul Music - Sam and Dave, The Supremes, Temps etc etc The thing that got me into Northern was after swopping tapes with a guy who is on here I think - Martin T. He would send me cassettes of The James Taylor Quartet and 'sneak' a soul tune on the end and they sounded like nothing else I'd ever heard! So, with a deep breath, and after hearing it in The Western Star Domino club in Bristol, I forked out a massive £5 for "Cigarette Ashes" off a certain John Manship around 1985, then went crazy with a £7 purchase of "Smokey Joes La La" by Googie Rene. Still got them both and play them out occasionally Good thread this
  7. Cos I can't find a copy and just hoping someone can find one for me or point me in the right direction. All offers gratefully received - I'll even pay for a copy
  8. I'll go for one the best double siders - Young Brothers - What's Your Game / Baby then I can flip it over Yes!!! WHAT a record.......... Last heard this in Gloucester somewhere, just before it flooded I think Didn't think this 45 existed anywhere where someone would actually play it.. Goose pimples now thinking about it Anyone want to trade their copy
  9. Well this is going well, - debate wise So - do you keep the floor going 'early doors' and show everyone that dancing is expected And / or Do you 'break' new sounds and keep the listeners with urges for new tunes going? For me its the latter - the 100 Club - was and is THE place to hear stuff I've never heard before - No 'sheep' mentality - no playing of stuff thats current - each to their own - would arrive home with memories of 'what the hell was that tune' and 'when is the next nighter' - same with GO GO Children night in Bristol (this isn't my soul night, it is in my home town though) - they play sounds for a tenner, B sides, rare UK Northern obscurities - all played with TRUE PASSION Any warm up set should challenge, make you feel comfortable AND make you rush to the decks to find out what the hell was being played. I remember at a Saracens Cheltenham Soul night about 3 / 4 years ago and Meg played an entire set off LP - and what a superb set of stuff she played too. At one of our nights recently I played The Sweet Three on Decca - nheard it on a tape about 8 years ago followed by Bonnie Herman and one of my mates who I respect, and whom knows a lot about Soul and plays great stuff when he DJ's rushed up to ask what this was. Surely - for us hungry folks with a desire to hear stuff that blows your head off, THAT'S what its about.
  10. This song is called "A long Way To Be Happy" - and was apparantly meant to be her first solo single for Philles but it was shelved before turning up on a Phil Spector compilation lp. Anyone know please the name of the LP and details as I need to hunt a copy down
  11. Slow, Deep, Group Harmony, Beat Ballads, Oddities, Latin etc? Do you play for 'yourself' - or In Other Words (the fascinators ) what you want to hear, or do you experiment with tunes at the back of your box? Do most peeps start with slower paced tunes and slowly build up the tempo? And (finally), what do you play??
  12. As I've got a terrific version on a tape that Mick Smith used to play out circa 1992/3 ish in early sets in the basement. I've listened to the Patti Page version but its not this one - anyone know please?
  13. Boogaloo Mar 8 09, 05:56 PM post='1020873'] Promotings like an addiction and I have to admit I'm an addict. I love getting people together and giving them a great night out with some awesome music thrown in. Mind you it's not for everyone because it can be stressful and I've seen lots of people lose hair, money, sleep, friends, sanity, their perspective on life and the will to live. My tip, for what it's worth, is if you love it do it but don't forget it's not the only thing in your life. Ah - we like events too and started our little nights in Brizzle cos noone else would put on Soul Music and we got a little fed up of travelling. Bristol is a very multicultural place with huge diversity but no 60's Soul Nights despite being surrounded by 'traditional' soul towns and cities. So we started our nights, and thought that we should get a night where we invite our friends along and get people together - hence Getting Together ! Anyone else wonder why Brizzle hasnt had a thriving NS scene out of Yate or were all the Yaters travellers from further North (and South)
  14. Thanks to everyone who pm'd me and posted on here Through this and the sharp end of vinyl and by searching on here for the artists I've found that ALL of my copies are 2nd issues or boots Ah well, they cost me a total of £8 and they do look nice! Thanks again

I do want to sell them but naturally need to price them correctly and don't want to mislead
  16. Hearing Mick Smith play "You Brought About A Change In Me" as you are queuing down the stairs........ the way Mel Britt sounds when the tune is bouncing around the walls..... The way the hairs stand up on the back of my neck and the fact that I can't stop grinning when I go...... and that some tunes sound so damn good I could cry with the pure emotion of it all...
  17. Got to be Chuck Jackson - by a Vicki Baines no less ( err..... Country (Girl) mile...

  20. 'Pete S' Aug 15 08 post='841446'] Got to be honest, I don't remember doing this podcast, (the one above) or was it the one that I put up for a limited time only...24 hours...I got it back from Karen (soulgirl)...anyway it appears that the entire podcast is mostly unreleased (at the time) material so it might be an interesting listen. 21. So many to choose from but I always come back to "Just A Little Misunderstanding" - cos of the powerful vocal and "What Happened To Yesterday" - one of the first covered up 45's I heard in the basement along Oxford Street - when I hear it I'm back there, wondering what it is and how great this scene is..
  22. To London from Bristol was enough for me during the late 80's - seemed further then (than now ) due to the small and older unreliable cars we had then - Mini's and Triumph Heralds! Things have also got easier over the years due to nicer cars with proper heaters in them The other way to ensure that you get to your do fresh and in a good mood is to organise your night just a few hundred yards from where you live Only trouble you then get is the walk home with all your 45's - ouch
  23. I'm in babysitting rather than being at Weston and been listening to "Why When Love Is Gone" by The Originals off their "Green Grow The Lilacs" LP - you know - the slow version of the Isleys track. This was on a Cellar Full Of Motown CD sometime - its a fab version, and the LP was found in a Bristol shop Good God wonders will never cease
  24. Just Pm'd you Regards Ian Williams
