On one of the tapes at the 100 Club the DJ stops the music and asks if there is a Dr in the house and says its no joke can a Dr get to the top of the stairs...... Then plays "Baby I'm Yours" . think its unreleased? Very good! -

I have about 8 tapes from this era. See if you can identify who the DJ was on the below from 1990. "You Need Love" "I Don't Wanna Cry No More" Dave Charles (before I knew the real title!) "The Harlem Tremble" Frank Foster (with the dj saying this was the first time playing it out) "You'll Always Be In Style" Patti Austin etc etc Later on I switch the tape off and put it back on at the 100 Club (this is 1990.... ) and there is Yuan Williams (or Wang Williams) with the Mailbox cover up... Its great stuff - I'm loving listening to it again! Recording it all onto i tunes on my pc. It you want copies let me know, its no problem. Ian -

Ever Had Someone Refuse To Sell You 45's?
Ian Williams replied to Cheapsiderecords's topic in All About the SOUL
Ian Dewhirst That guy's been frustrating buyers for the last 30 years. I've been arguing with him for that long anyway. The conversation usually went something like this: Me: "I don't suppose there's any chance of looking through the stuff in the back room and behind the counter is there". Guy: "Well, how it works here, is you tell me what you want and I'll see if I've got it". Me: "Well, unfortunately I collect stuff that I don't already know, so I don't know what I want until I see it." Guy: "Well, I guess you're out of luck then". Me: "OK. That's a shame though 'cos I've got $10,000 burning a hole in my pocket......" Guy: "Well, what do you want then"? Me: "I don't know until I see it" Etc, etc, etc, etc......... Had the same conversation with him in '77, '87, '97 and '07. Last time I went in he offered me the lot for $250,000 and I said "it's a bit late now...." Ian D EXACTLY the same thing and conversation happened when me and Steve Harry went in around 8 years ago. We felt so intimated and unwelcome that we left after about 10 minutes! -
I heard this last night at the excellant night in Cardiff and it was played out by Mike Ashley. Anyone know it or the current price. If it's not too expensive - who wants to sell me a copy?
-
Twas the 100 Club in Nov 88 I think. Went the Friday night and realised it was the Saturday instead - doh So back the next night from Bristol and we took a seat and watched everything unfold. Despite hundreds of Kent LP's to my name ( ) and plenty of Soul Supply LP's too it took about 3 hours before I recognised ANYTHING! Then on came "Shoes" - off the same Kent LP no doubt - ha ha and we were off! That was the first one I knew. Then after taping those early nights via a Walkman I grew to love the cover ups via Butch's sets - and never looked back. Havent been for a couple of years now but gonna make up for that this year!

I was outbid on one two days ago - went for £37. If you have one for sale then please pm me. Regards Ian

Me too!! What an intro........ Is this the only Soul 45 by the way where the title of the song are the first words sung?

Hmmm... Dare I Post This Up But Does Anyone
Ian Williams replied to Ian Williams's topic in Look At Your Box
Ian Williams 19 January 2010 I'm just going through several hundred 45's that I have. Its quite fun playing all the b sides and discovering tunes you've never heard before - there's a few good ones. Me and a friend bought about a hundred or so 45's a while ago from a local record shop - some sold, we kept some and others refuse to sell no matter what the price... Some of the 45's I've got I have no idea how I got them - I can usually remember purchases but not some of these. So down to the title of the topic in question - what do you do with your very 'worthless' 45's that you don't like and can't sell? Give them away? Sell them for 50p each? Or does anyone (admit) to chucking them into landfill? I've got a Marge Joseph 80's 45 even Soul Sam would find hard to get people to dance to - what do I do with this one? Hmm... looks like its a draw then - some folks would want everything that someone else was going to get rid of - and spend all night playing the b sides and playing the beat ballads at 78rpm to turn a slowie to a stomper Whilst others have no qualms about binning some tunes or winding up their mates. I'm now thinking that I'll take the box of 80 or so and sell some and have a 'free' why don't you recycle section I wonder, like some car boot sales, if I'll come home muttering... "I couldn't GIVE them away...." -

Tavasco 'love Is Trying To Get A Hold Of Me' 7" Rampart
Ian Williams replied to a topic in Look At Your Box
This was always a 45 that was around and I thought I could buy at anytime I wanted... not now though. I also got a copy of The Constellations "I Don't Know About You" from Butch for £20... Then sold it for £20 to a mate - it was £250 at Prestatyn 5 years later... - should have bought it then cos it lovely but now a small fortune to retrieve! -
Loads of copies on the bay for less than a tenner!

Good Tunes That Are Still Cheap To Buy

Good Tunes That Are Still Cheap To Buy
Ian Williams replied to Ljblanken's topic in All About the SOUL
Yes! I've just got them there Masqeuraders for less than a tenner including the postage from the US. What a great little tune from a great little group... Trouble is it's hard to key the name into searches on the Evil Bay cos the spelling is hard and its easily mispelled - so hopefully my copy of "How Big Is Big" won't get found and I'll buy it for peanuts! -

Ian Williams replied to Ljblanken's topic in All About the SOUL
3 tunes there, totally agree with their quality! I remember hearing "Make Sure" around 1991 in a club in Gloucester and couldnt believe I'd never heard it before and that it was in my price range (a fiver I think) It still sounds good now - what price if it was rare - a tenner? The Chimes I heard in the pub at Prestatyn - where all the best mid tempo cheapies are played - the best sets, imo, are played here. -
Motown 45 Wanted - Supremes & Temptations
Ian Williams replied to Ian Williams's topic in Record Wants
Thanks, I'd seen this one via the Evil Bay. The cheapskate in me is trying to find a copy here in the UK so it doesn't cost anything much via postage. Surely its a £1 quidder in a charity shop type 45 - isn't it? We'll see... NOW GOT ONE Thanks at a fiver incl postage! -
Please.... Must be Ex or Mint condition please. I reckon value is around a fiver - hope so anyway. Thanks and look forward to hearing from you Regards Ian

J.d. Bryant On Shrine Estate Find In Usa
Ian Williams replied to Sheldonsoul's topic in Look At Your Box
I always think that a good measure of a records appeal is the 'goosepimple test'. When the first few bars of any record plays - if its special to you, you come over all peculiar and get goose pimples and a rush of emotion.. I certainly do with The Prophets, The Cairos and Les Chas... or however its spelt and especially with Shirley Edwards little beauty. Rare or not, and I respect the collectors view on what also makes them special, I'd travel almost anywhere to hear these masterpieces... So, anyone playing them out at the moment??
