  1. Three from Philly Faustus - Baby Please - Gamble Frank Beverly - She kissed Me - Fairmount Ducky & Glowlighters - Over & Over - Uptown Des Parker
  2. I had the "Lay This Burden Down" a couple of Years ago and was stunned at how good and clear, the Instrumental was, complete with "Count Ins" certainly a cut above the Soul Galore "instrumentals" - so what's the story on it, was it legal, is it a remake, or is it from the vaults - I really don't think anybody could possibly tinker around with a vinyl copy to end up with this! Des Parker
  3. I've picked up 2 of these "Pink" copies within the last 12 Months in Pittsburgh, where Tommy Neal was a massive record back in the day! Des Parker
  4. Have a promo without sleev for sale at the moment for £200 (inc P & P) Des Parker
  5. Rod, I made the point about the "Joanne Courcey" and you're right about discs being repeated in the past, but they were fresh and new at the time, whereas JC has been hammered for what seems like forever. I'm not having a pop at JC or the folks that own it, it IS (in my opinion) a very good Northern Soul record. What I am saying is the philosophy of spending your redundancy/inheritance/proceeds of armed robbery/whatever on 25 played out expensive toons, that you have to play coz there is no depth to your knowledge or collection is in my books on a par with the Bootleg playing D.J. I'm all in favour of creativity, imagination, and passion, and use the "Joanne Courcey incident" as one example, as there were other tunes, even on that night that were played more than once. I don't lose any sleep over this, but would certainly like to go to more venues where a little more imagination was employed. Des Parker
  6. Phil Unfortunately the acetate I sold you/Ken came from a completely unrelated source Des
  7. Just read back through Simon, I fully agree that Rod's was the most pertinant point on the thread!! Des Parker
  8. My comments about the "Soul Police" were a little tongue in cheek, Trevski, and I'm certainly not questioning anyones passion, I just feel that this passion is sometimes a little misplaced. Here's a little illustration of what makes me bemused by what I often see on this slightly illogical scene. Flanny's rightly getting praise on the Burnley thread for having the b******s to play the "Rufus Lumley" I turned a couple of these up about 3/4 Years ago, one I bought for $5 in Pennsylvania and one that I bought in Minneapolis (in a "local records" section) for $10. I sold Johnny Beggs one, who I feel was the first person to play this out, and one I chucked in the sales box for £30 (think of a number & add a nought job). Anyhow, as I'm out and about, I'll say to some of the great and good "you should have a look in there, there's some nice stuff cheap" anyhow I often get the following replies - I DON'T BUY CHEAP RECORDS - I ONLY BUY RARE RECORDS The Irony of this tale is that since Friday, I've been asked for this disc, by members of the elite corps who are quite happy to buy the tune now someone else has had the bottle to play it, and also now it's value has gone up tenfold!!!!!!!!! Trying to keep the topic on track, I couldn't care less about the issue of D.J.'s playing "boots" what I find more worrying is hearing the likes of Joanne Courcey Four times in a night (like I did recently) for F*** sakes find something New and exciting to play. Des Parker
  9. Here's an odd situation - I was given ownership rights to a load of stuff by a producer's Son in the U.S. after doing some work with his Father, who for some error of judgement spoke highly of me, am I allowed to play vinyl carvers of the released stuff - I wouldn't do it, for fear of arrest by the Soul Stasi who obviously feel they "own" the scene, but am I above the "law" on this occasion. Des Parker
  10. Wading through this thread, there are some very emotive points made. Of course it's not the lowest point for "Northern Soul" unless you view the past through Rose coloured Glasses. I haven't heard Ian Levines new C.D. and probably never will do, unless someone unbiased gives it an absolutely blinding review, but let's not forget that this is not his first foray into music, and it probably won't be the last - can you honestly say that it is worst than SOME of the "Casino Classics", "Destiny Cover Versions" or some of the truly shocking "Soul Galore Instrumentals". Des Parker
  11. I'm sure there are "soul connoisseurs" who will poo poo this record, and state that it shouldn't be played, and therefore we mustn't be allowed to listen to it, but it's pure "60's" dance music, which has always been an integral part of the "Northern Soul" scene. I used to hammer this tune Years ago, used to get people saying "what was that Ska record you played?" couldn't quite see that link myself! - hey, it's a bit of fun. Des Parker
  12. T.S.U. Toronados - A Thousand Wonders - Ovide £700 Des Parker
  13. For Sale : - Betty Wilson - I'm Yours - Dayco £1200 (£1500 in "the book") P.M. me if interested (I'm not interested in trades thanks) Des Parker
  14. Best Two D.J.'s on the scene ever (in my own opinion) Butch & Richard Searling....... can't remember them dancing, didn't care if they did or didn't! D.J.'s that Dance making better D.J.'s, it's F***ing irrelevant, and always has been. D.J.'s - Concentrate on getting some dynamite new tunes, not on your dance moves......that's your job. Des Parker
  15. Mark I'll try and remember what I played (it was quite late for me, as I'm a boring Bastard that doesn't drink or partake in any other stimulants) but will do my best for you, though I know I didn't play "Ducky" as it's heart attack material at that time of the night. Des
  16. I love "Ducky" - it's messy, frantic, urgent, atmospheric - all the things I like in a Northern record, though I like Tommy Dodson for the same reason, rarity DOESN'T come into the equation for me, I've got F*** all to prove, but I can understand why it would not be everybody's cup of Cappuccino. Des Parker
  17. Different "Uptown" label, Ducky & Glowlighters "Uptown" label is out of Philadelphia. Des Parker
  18. Also a Gary Rushbrooke spin from early Stafford, if I remember rightly. Des Parker
  19. I bought one off Tim Brown about 3 Years ago for £300, so I suppose that's about the right value, unless someone can cheer me up & tell me it's worth loads more. Des
  20. Label looks "hand drawn" on the original, anyone know any history to the recording, is it linked to any other labels. Des Parker
  21. I assume, like most people, I try and be diplomatic, but there are occasions where you begin to question the mental health of a few that come up to the decks for a "chat". Many Years ago I was D.J.ing in Gloucester when someone came up with a list of about 6 English Tamla Motown numbers e.g. TMG507, etc etc, no titles or artists, just these numbers, and then asked if i could announce over the mic if anyone had these numbers. I asked him if he wanted these records to which he replied "No, I already have them, I just want to see if anyone else has them" Even then I managed to politely refuse such an act of sheer insanity! Des Parker
  22. Without fear of getting verbally attacked for asking such a presumptious question, I really am just curious and honestly don't know the answer, was the previous C.D. legally done, and does it have good sleeve notes etc, etc, cause if it fits these criteria, I wouldn't mind getting one, always loved this album & not just the obvious tracks - one you can put on the player and listen to from start to finish. I did have a Canadian copy of this Years ago, who ended up with that? Des Parker
  23. I believe John Weston owns the "Wand" copy of "Earl Harrison" that appeared in John Manship's Book.
  24. I can understand us mere mortals craving after the "Cabell" tune, but I can't understand the logic of "top" D.J.'s buying the "Parliaments" for hideous amounts of Money, especially if they're playing at the same or similar venues to "Butch" you'd think common sense would dictate not to touch it with a bargepole whilst Butch is hammering it and use your hard earned X amount of thousands of Pounds to buy something that was unique to you, or am I being a little naive? Des
  25. Wilson Pickett - Let Me Be Your Boy - Correctone, Cub & Verve Des Parker
