Do You Feel Sorry For Northern Soul Collectors Starting Out
ZootSuit replied to Wiganer1's topic in All About the SOUL
It's all relative, in 1967 FL Moore was selling The Poets She Blew a Good Thing on Symbol. (This is the first 'proper' Northern track I acquired) At time I'd never heard of FL Moore OR Northern as such, but Dingle, then quite a well known local DJ) had played it at a do in Bedford I were at. ASAP, off to Leighton Buzzard by bus I went, a 17 year old 2nd year apprentice at Vauxhall earning, before tax, 35 shillings a week, ( £1.75P a week to those of you not familiar with Pounds, Shillings and Pence). SO, Mr Moore wanted £1 5/- (£1.25P !!!), suffice to say, suffice I couldn't afford that sort of dosh, I did get a 'free' copy , the story is on another thread, yes I still have it, AND I'd snatch some ones arm off if I were offered a copy at that price today !!!!, (no, don't offer me yours ) (How the feck do you live on £1.75 a week !!!!!, well 10 ciggies were round about 12P, beer were 7 or 8p a pint (lager hadn't arrived in the UK), daily papers no more than tuppence (1P) for example and it were 5/- (25P) to see Drifters at the California Ballroom in Dunstable.) Pop singles were I think 3/- (15P) However, to answer the question, yes, for those starting out on a serious collecting path, its going to cost a lot of money, BUT in 46 years they'll look back and realise how cheap it actually was......in relative terms, ie the cost now as opposed to what they will cost then, assuming the scene still exists . -
Bloody hell YES....I'm 65 now and gagging to get to an allnighter, not been too one since that visit to Caino in '75, just soul nights now, and that after a 37 year break, MUST get rid of her indoors !!!!.

Yep, I've shared a floor with Booper, and learnt a few moves, at the nighter in Bradford around 72/73 that was in the cellar of a house !!!!. Linda Williams from Keighley? used to go there. Theres a picture, or there was a picture, of a very young Frank in the gallery pages with one of the Wheel DJ's, Les Cockle I think, its not there at the moment though. Dave Godin, we only ever saw and spoke to him at the Birds Nest in West Hampstead, NOW he was a VERY strange dude. Yep, there is a snap of Booper with Les Cockel, look at the wWheel pictures in the gallery's.

Well, I don't know about 'older' blokes a Wigan, but I went to Casino once, were July 1975, I were 26 years old and to me the place was full of young kids, (yes we all started somewhere, me I were 18 at my first nighter, Kelmarsh in Northampton ). Anyway, its been mentioned in another thread but lots of hopping, skipping and jumping going on, never went again and by time I could have done it were over. Oh yeah, Soulcarp were with me and we bumped into and had a verbal with Swish who happened to be there, I reckon we were the oldest dudes there that particular night.

You know, to be fair to the ''floor walkers'' I can remember doing exactly the same thing on at least one occasion. Were up at Soulcarps drum, his parents place in Pontifract and we decided to go to the Heartbeat in Leeds, arrived, got geared up and buzzing, (NOTE I'd just learnt to shuffle like my feet were on castors) and heard Agent Double 0 Soul (Instrumental) for the first time !!!!. I distinctly remember zooming up and down the whole length of the floor repeatedly, HOWEVER I were shuffling AND moving my feet, NOT WALKING !!!, Don't think I ever did it again 'cause we started going to Cats and the dancers there were shit hot !!!!!!!!, used very little floor space and still looked brilliant, especially the head spinners......AND they KNEW HOW TO CLAP !!!!!.

Buy more than 1 record !!!!!, most US dealers, in my experience, will charge between 50 cents and a dollar for each extra disc. ie Buy 2 discs and pay either $12.50 or $13 dollars P&P

Between 1968 and 1974 us Luton Soulies.......Smelly George, Chiefy, Soulcarp (who worked in Luton at the time)John Harris, Dougie Howlett, Rocco, Noreen and Efna, Neil Cowlie, and a few others used to travel up North EVERY week to either the Torch, Blackpool Mecca,Catacombs(Wolverhampton, in fact we used to go over to the Torch after the Cats, usually arriving some time after midnight),Casino etc etc, OK, we had transport but I don't think I ever got home till 22.00 on a Sunday night, having to hold my strides up as I'd usuially lost a fair bit of weight weight (gear and dancing used to have that effect). Can remember walking from Harbourgh to the M1 on a few occasions !!!

Steve Manus and me self were verbaling about the dance style you mention, and came up with ''Dance Floor Walking'' to describe it, (and yes they do seem to attach them selves to you) and the amount of floor used is...... ALL OF IT. Clapping NS style is unique to our scene and goes all the way back to the Wheel, personally don't know what the applause is for at the end of certain tunes, never did it back in the day, but then I've I've just returned to NS do's after a 37 year break and the first thing I noticed was the lack of those short, sharp LOUD claps in the right spots, especially when you're the only bugger that does it.

Beautiful Night....nothing without EVERYONE giving it clap, clap, clap, clap, on the break AND..black driving gloves as well, anyone. 300 hundred peeps all clapping in sync, not the applause type clap but that REAL SHARP CLAP.......F**KING AWESOME, especially the first time you saw/heard it happen, whatever the tune!!!!!!! Bring it back on.

Were it not a Wheel sound, seem to recall in B&S when Godin started his ''tell me your fave sound'' and everything started coming out the woodwork that it got a mention, and this were before, I think, the Torch or Wigan kicked off. Hey Kim REALLY NOT FCUKING NICE, especially when its probably someone you call a friend . I only have the Johnny Moore outing on a Date issue, looked the other two up up on UT, both bloody good tunes which I've not heard before. Listen M8, I actually caught, red handed 40 years ago, some barsteward trying to lift All Turned On by Mr Wilson on Ric Tic (WHEN it was a major tune) made out he was having laugh, BUT I knew, and still know the the man, and he weren't doing it for a laugh . See both yourself and Lisa Saturday, know how you're feeling, its what I felt like when JM came and pillaged my collection and paid me a pittance for about 200 discs that inc In my lonely room (Velvelettes on VIP), More love (Gospel Classics/UK chess), Make me yours (ZZ Hill/UK Action). You know what I think 'cause weve talked about it, really hope you suss who it was out 'cause it's going to bug you till you do.
