It is with great pleasure we announce a special night at CULCHETH on SATURDAY 4th NOVEMBER when GRUMPY SOUL ‘takes over’ the venue to bring you a night of QUALITY RARE SOUL taking you back to those FANTASTIC GRUMPY nights, which were a magnet for those looking for something a little different from the norm. GRUMPY SOUL started in 2011and ran off and on approximately 6years in Runcorn / Deeside If you ever attended Grumpy Soul in all its guises you'll know to expect a wicked selection of Rare Soul basically expect the unexpected!! The original residents CARL FORTNUM, PHIL THRELFALL and JOAN LIVESEY will be together again, along with GRUMPY guest and CULCHETH resident KEV MURPHY plus guests, to be confirmed. On the announcement of this Special Night, Joan says, “We're really chuffed to be asked to do something at this great venue and will do our best to re-create some of the atmosphere from those heady nights in Runcorn and down Deeside way. Grumpy never set out to be anything other than a good soul night, eighties stylee. Our flyers always said "sounds from late Wigan, Stafford, Shotts, Parr Hall, Tony's and beyond ..." because that's the period we all cut our teeth on. The philosophy was always oriented around our firm belief that if a record is good enough it should be played and people should be dancing to it. We were always so grateful that people travelled consistently from far and wide with the expectation that they'd hear quality records from the get-go, whether they cost £10 or £10,000 (in the insane world we now inhabit), the odd acetate and stuff that tends not to get played to death everywhere you go. It'll be exactly the same deal this time out. We're absolutely delighted that Carl Fortnum - one of our long-standing residents - can make it and that Kev Murphy, who guested for us when we were in Runcorn, is also on board. (Sadly, our other resident Dave Welding can't make it this time; that would've been the icing on the cake ...) Joan and Phil will make up the numbers and play a few records too, as per. Be so good to see some of the Grumpy regulars we haven't bumped into for four years or more (crikey) and hopefully one or two who never got to come along first time around. Needless to say, we're well up for it. So, join us on SATURDAY 4th NOVEMBER and make this a night to remember...

Thanks to everyone who came down to CULCHETH for the CASINO ANNIVERSARY special! Got great comments on the night with new faces and ‘old’ faces, all coming together to enjoy some great music, as we not only celebrated the Casino but 50 years of ‘Modern’ from the early 70’s right up to today. The DJ’s did a great job from start to finish, so special thanks to Jimmy Knowles, Paul Shirley, Ian Wills, Kev Murphy, Steve Plumb, Charlie Smith, Bill Wildman and Special Guests Tim Asibende in the Main Room and Chris Box in the Modern Room. Hopefully, we achieved the aim last night of playing some of the records that were played at Wigan but didn’t reach the dizzy heights of some of the now classics from back then but are now more part of today’s rare soul scene. Here’s a few I played early doors as a sneaky warm up sesh Patti Drew Stop and Listen Eddie Carlton Misery The Gentlemen Four You Can’t Keep a Good Man Down Delouise Berry No Other Girl George (Juke) Bird I Know I’m in Love With You Sandy Wynns I’ll Give That To You The Mods Dry My Eyes The Jades Hotter Than Fire (for Bob H) Sonny Herman What About Me Marty Lewis Can’t Do Without You Helene Smith Thrills and Chills And a quick plug for the Modern Room Retrospective with… Short People Why You Put It To Me Baby Dutch Robinson Can’t Get Along Without You Thanks for your comments, really glad you enjoyed it Great stuff, thank you

Great post Steve

So who should we ask to be the Special guest DJ at a night celebrating the ‘Sounds’ of the Casino? We wanted someone who had been there through the good times and the bad, who had witnessed the ‘On all Fours’ stompers of the early years, carrying on where the Torch left off but also someone who embraced the changes in music in the later years, when records supplied by John Anderson at Soul Bowl started to rock the hallowed halls to its very foundations. That choice had to be TIM ASHIBENDE! Tim was the almost every week, wheeling and dealing in the record bar, discussing the latest tunes and making friends from all over the UK. If you haven’t read Tim’s interviews in Soul Up North with Julie Molloy, then you need to and you will see why Tim was the right choice for this special Anniversary event

One of my favourite DJ’s playing in the clubs around the North-West and North-Wales is Ian Wills. Ian and wife Angie is a regular feature supporting local venues with Angie keeping a photographic record of Ian’s exploits behind the ‘Wheels of Steel’ and happy smiling faces wherever they go As well as having a fantastic record collection spanning many years, Ian has managed to track down some of the most elusive records from the Casino All-Nighters, some of which, are only more recently getting the dance-floor recognition they deserve. So, check out some of Ian’s favourites as well as some MONSTER sounds on Saturday night, when CULCHETH pays homage to Wigan @ 50!
-
Paul Shirley AKA Wigan Paul, as the name suggests local Wigan lad, Paul came through the Casino years, as a regular helping to clean up in the mornings after the All-Nighters to become one of the best known Northern collectors and DJ’s in the North-West. Over the years, Paul has bought and sold many great records, including classics and rarities and some of the most sought-after tunes from North-West clubs, where he still DJ’s on a regular basis. Paul has been digging deep to find a mix of top tunes for Saturday, so make sure you join us for a night of total quality

Gettin' Ready For the Get Down!

Looking forward to the return of CULCHETH two room Soul Night this Saturday, especially the modern room with Preston City Soul DJ CHARLIE SMITH bringing his box of modern MONSTERS to the party, BILL WILDMAN digging into the crates for a great selection of 80’s classic from those great North-West nights at Cassinellis, Rafters and Newton Cricket Club. We are joined by special guest and one of the busiest guys on the scene CHRIS BOX, doin’ what Chris does best. There’s all that then later in the proceedings Myself and STEVE PLUMB will be ‘tipping a hat’ to the Casino 50th Anniversary celebrations by looking back at some of the 70’s sounds played on the scene during the CASINO years, making way for the early Modern Soul scene, so expect some great Modern Soul sounds at CULCHETH THIS SATURDAY
-
So the guys have been diggin’ into their collections for Saturday and pullin’ out some of the sounds from the Casino, that are either great memories for them personally (and hopefully you) or that after a short life-span for whatever reason, disappeared off the playlists until later years but all still sounding right for today Starting with CULCTHETH resident Kev Murphy and a record he’s been featuring at Culcheth and in his guest spots 1min 47 seconds of dancefloor DYNAMITE
-
Great post Bob... and a perfect example of the kind of record we'll be featuring at CULCHETH on Saturday! Sooo many great records like this, and many more suffering the same fate at the time at the Mecca etc) which over the years have become more appreciated as tastes and tempos changed, (not to mention lungs, hearts and leg muscles ;-))

From all the comments I’ve had being out and about over the past few weeks, it looks like this event has really captured the imagination… A night celebrating the Casino 50th Anniversary, featuring DJ’s who were there, ‘on the floor’, in the record bar and part of the fabric of those halcyon nights! Playing records they first heard there, records that are still relevant and played in venues today, as part of our wonderful scene. Join us at Culcheth on Saturday 2nd September for a great night out…

Great choice Bob, one that Jordan has been playing in his CULCHETH sets this year
