  1. Quite simple really........They're NOT always empty! First off let me be clear of MY personal definition of 'Modern Soul' here, it's nothing made in the seventies, nothing made in the eighties, maybe a little bit of ninties but definitely music made in the noughties, all tempos, all styles, Indie, Southern, Soulful Garage but SOULFUL through voice or vibe. If you accept that definition and are not expecting to hear Charles Johnson or Driza Bone, then you need to visit Prestwich (two rooms Northern and Modern) where the 'Modern' room is packed EVERY month. Then if that's not enough try Stoke this weekend (Two Rooms Nothern and Modern) the Modern Room was very busy last time and will be again on Saturday. Failing that try BURY on the 19th (two rooms Northern and Modern) cause that'll be a busy Modern Room as well. If you cant make any of them then maybe you could try Fleetwood Marine Hall on the 27th (two rooms Northern and Modern) and the Modern Room will be FAR from empty there. These gigs are just off the top of my head and demonstrate that the 'Modern' Rooms as described in the initial post are far from empty. QED BazM
  2. Current spin at Prestwich and t'Orwell, wonderful tune, Gloria just tips it for me. BazM
  3. Really went with this at the late lamented and sadly missed 'Howard' sessions, became a floorfiller down there, only really heard it out since in this neck of the woods at the Orwell BazM
  4. Quality show Mark, as always, definitely going out on a high. Best wishes for the future BazM
  5. Richard is gonna be behind the decks in the Northern room at Prestwich on Sept 7th and if the kind of records he's talkin about playin are anything to go by it's gonna be well worth a look-see BazM
  6. hi Mark Please wish him all the best from me BazM
  7. Not as 'exotic' as some of the locations mentioned (except maybe Barry May in TK Maxx in Wigan! The secrets out Mate ) but Barclays bank have just played 'Sliced Tomatoes' for me while I was on hold.....made me smile BazM
  8. Bob Hinsley is playing this again, he played it at Prestwich last month sounded gr8

    Rare 45s

Hi John SR played at the Orwell great record
  12. Thanks Sean....Coincidently, the theme of this thread was/is exactly my intention at Morecambe, basically to play SH in a smaller room on the back of a Nighter and not to encroach into the main room. Nothing really new there and as Barry May has said in a previous post 'just mixed it up with quality soul music' and IMHO it worked. Really enjoyed it, it was the right place to do it, and the people who were there seemed to really enjoy it, therefore i'll be looking to do it some more at forthcomming gigs, so hopefully as far as it goes positively 'watch this space' Gotta say though it definitely needs to be 'tune' and 'substance' over just matching beats
  13. Hi Neil superb record and played at the Saints Club many years ago, remember vividly Robbo coming up to me and asking "what the F**K was that". Used to be able to pick it up for a fiver as no one really wanted to know it. It has always had the potential to be big record IMHO just needs more DJ's to get behind it. You're right, Robbo always features it, Karl played it last night in the DDA room at Lowton and it filled the floor so maybe £20 - £40 would be fair today but who knows tomorrow.
  14. Been on my wants list for years just picked up a nice white demo at the right price.....bliss....top tune!
  15. --> QUOTE(Geoff B @ Apr 6 2007, 04:40 PM) link What about a record called "Flashback" Heard him play this on the radio once.Would like to know who this is by,think he mentioned Ritchie Adams, but was this a coverup name? Hi Geoff.......It's Derek Martin he played it Friday at Prestwich and I've heard Neil Jones playing it at Bury Town Hall, Great record!
  16. Think you're right there Ted which reminds me of some of his 'stranger' inventions such as 'Lee Moore and the Resourceful Ones' and The Phantom Janitor' !!!! didn't some tracks actually get 'released' as the cover up artist/title? Perhaps I shouldn't go there.................
  17. I have been trying to get Mr Searling to grace the decks and do a Northern spot at Prestwich for a while now, mostly in response to all the people who request Northern on his radio show, anyway he's agreed and he will be playing Northern this Friday at the Longfield Suite, Prestwich. Should be good!.........Looking forward to it already.......................................
  18. You're not wrong there mate!
  19. Still chasing Johnny Dunn myself
  20. Nice one Billy, maybe in the latter days of Wigan and through their obvious business links but let's be honest he must have pulled thousands of records from 'other' sources as every top DJ would do to craet that very 'Hot Box'
  21. I was talking to Richard Searling at Prestwich recently, about a record that I'd heard him play at many moons ago, which had become not only one of my all time favorite records but one of my most elusive 'wants'. I got to thinking how many bloody tunes this guy had played over time, that had become, not only some of my favorite records, but i'll bet many other peoples as well. I guess all you have to do is think about are some of the venus he's been associated with, Va Va's Wigan, Stafford, Morecambe, Rotherham (and that's just the 'Northern' venues) to realise how influential he's been. The record was The Notations on TAD............ Just wondered if there's any other records he's championed over the years, that have remained favorites of fellow Soul Sourcers?
