  1. VARIOUS PIED PIPER - FOLLOW YOUR SOUL This is the eagerly awaited second volume of Pied Piper Productions, the Detroit group of arrangers, writers, artists and musicians who defined the Northern Soul style in their short 1966-1967 lifespan. Easily as strong as the first Pied Piper Presents CD of 2013, this volume has some of the biggest new 60s soul discoveries. Nancy Wilcox provides two with the pounding 'He'll Be Leaving You' and equally classy 'More Than A Miracle'. September Jones' 'Voodoo Madamoiselle' has been the biggest record of the past two years, already released as a single following Northern Soul girl dancer Lev featuring it in one of her YouTube videos; this is its CD debut. September's 'You'll Never Know Why' is femme soul perfection. Lorraine Chandler's original version of the James Bond theme 'You Only Live Twice' is even more urgent than the first version Ace revealed in the 90s and her beautiful 'Lost Without You' shows Pied Piper could produce mesmerising ballads when required. There are two scorchers from the Cavaliers, the fully finished version of 'Ooh It Hurts Me' with Jack Ashford's rhythm track, missing from previous versions and 'Without Someone To Tell Me' whose acetate sale reached the highest price ever. The Metros also have two previously unheard numbers and there are two established classics, one from the Dynamics with 'I Need Your Love' and the other the evergreen 'Could It Be You' courtesy of Sharon Scott. There are new exclusive photos of both those acts. Harry Gates is a largely unknown quantity but his haunting 'Love Will Find A Way' which utilises the backing of Tony Hester's 'Just Can't Leave You' is a terrific find. The Pied Piper Players, ie the musicians on the sessions, many of whom were established Funk Brothers from Motown, can be heard uncluttered by any pesky singers on the Cavaliers' 'Hold To My Baby' and the Dynamics' powerful 'Love Sick'. There are great mid-tempo ballads from Freddy Butler and the Hesitations, cameos from Sam E Solo and Mikki Farrow and several thousand words that help paint the picture of the source of some of the best uptempo soul ever made.

  3. First mentions starting to appear on the information super highway, hopefully won't be long now! VARIOUS NORTHERN SOUL'S CLASSIEST RARITIES VOLUME 5 Nearly five years has elapsed since our last volume in this popular series and our latest CD reflects the continued success of funk-influenced dancers on the Northern Soul scene. The obscure Atlanta-based Sho Biz label provides 'Lover Man' by the Soul Brothers in that style; this is by far the rarer of their two singles. Mel Davis' 'Just Another Smile' first found favour on the Deep Funk scene but the solid beat enabled it to crossover to forward-thinking Northern venues in the same way that the Webb People's 'I'm Sending Vibrations' has done. That Dave Hamilton track, produced in Detroit, is featured in an extended version with superb multi-track tape audio for the first time. Other tape finds come from Nashville's most important girl group, the Avons, whose original 60s version of Peggy Gaines' 'When The Boy That You Love' is femme soul unsurpassed. The Bay Area's Jeanette Jones had yet another unissued soul stomper in the can at GSR studios and 'Break Someone Else's Heart' will please her followers. J.J. Barnes has devotees stretching back forty years plus and the discovery of a third side, previously unreleased, from his classy Ring 45 will set Detroit collectors' hearts aflutter. Southern fans will be thrilled to hear Clarence Reid's version of Paul Kelly's 'You Don't Know (You Just Don't Know)'. Big Northern hitters include Terri Goodnight's 'They Didn't Know' a super-rare stomper that has evaded most collectors for decades. Mary Saxton's 'Losing Control' also commands top dollar, while classy Chicago numbers by the Steelers and Roy Wright aren't remotely cheap. The relatively common 'Wrong Wrong Wrong' is flavour of the year again and picking up plays all over the scene. The Volumes' 'That Same Old Feeling' is a quality Detroit 45 which could have been designed for this compilation, like the much cheaper but equally wonderful 'Two Loves Have I' by jazz giant Big Joe Turner. There are vocal groups, a hint of modern, a Wheel classic and piles of soul for collectors who appreciate the good stuff.
  4. Where is the best/cheapest place to get 7"/45rpm record mailers from?
  5. What's the current value of the Sylves release?
  6. A mint and unplayed copy. Went yesterday on John Manship's auction for £464.00. Yours for £350.00 inc tracked and insured postage in the UK. Payment by cheque or bank transfer (preferred)
  7. So what would a guess at the price of the 7 Inch be?
  8. Yes, those were my records. Turned out that there was two mixes of Azie Mortimer, a sort of jazzy one, and that one - full blooded northern. Was Soul City _ Cold Hearted Blues on there as well?
  9. I got on with him ok, I found the best approach was to give as good as you got. He was objectionable only if you let him be. Definitely an unusual character, I think social norms like courtesy and politeness were difficult for him. I genuinely don't think he understood why lots of people got hacked off with him. He was quite a generous person actually. He could be quite humorous as well.
  10. I think I helped Mr Domar with that mag. Does it have 'The Back Page Hit List' with a load of scanned 45s? If so they were records from my collection at the time.
  11. Righteous Bros Band- Rat Race for me
  12. ...... a Northern Soul's Classiest Rarities Vol 5?
  13. Hi Ian, I'm seeing snippets appear on the internet about this release. Are you yet in a position to enlighten us please? Cheers Tony T
  14. I didn't manage to find any vinyl when I was there in July but I did hear Silvetti-Spring Rain piped in a supermarket!
  15. Does the thread still exist? I've tried to find it without success.
  16. There is an alternate version of Tough Girl (rubbish), and the Little Baby side on emusic.com
  17. Oh that is brilliant, and brings back so many memories! I don't know if you know what a cover- up is but it was played covered up as 'Stanley Mitchell-Now You've Got Me Baby', then played as The Kinnettes/ Kinetics Band or other variants. I think that a vocal/inst 45 of this classic Stafford Top Of The World club sound should be very appealing. Of course also with a download ! Thanks so much for digging this out. I've never seen the original acetate so have no idea what it looks like, I believe that Roger Banks has one, or at least he used to. With regard to the M-Pac and Midas tunes I have been able to play them without problem. Have you considered compiling a CD from the various labels aimed just at the Northern Soul scene? I would be happy to suggest some tunes. Thanks again for persevering with the instrumental, that has made my week, and I'm on holiday at the moment!
  18. Fingers crossed!
  19. Hi twillg It does look like an extremely exciting set f releases. Do You think that you will be able to give a release to the instrumental of Alvin Cashh-Sweatin'? As per Dave Flynn's earlier post this has legendary status here in the UK
  20. Bit of a long shot, but did anybody make notes of the playlists from the night. Trying to remember what was played to put on my phone to listen to in the car, but can only remember about 50 tunes.
