A music scene for those who like ultra good music. A soul scene for the chosen masses whether you listen to, and maybe dance to and possibly even collect the records. A Northern Soul scene for those who dress up, travel, go to Soul Nights, All Nighters and Weekenders to socialise, dance and live the life. Sure, dancing is an important facet of the scene but generally at a venue and usually in spells. Some are known to dance in the house or at work but this is not common: some venues nowadays have fewer dancers but maybe more listeners drinking, talking, smoking, thumbing through record boxes etc. It is only a dance oriented scene as the music is so soulful.

Sold for £355 on Manship's auction a fortnight ago... Thanks for looking.

PM'd you. Mint unplayed copy here

Not really a term that was introduced but two catch phrases that have been around for decades. When you think about it, the records we like are all relative scarce, rare, holy grails and hens' teeth etc... Tape swappers back in the 80's compiled 'underplayed' tunes that they had stumbled on before others but this must have been happening since the invention of the cassette player. Rare soul is a term now being used more by progressive promoters who attempt to diversify the DJ line-up with RnB, Funk, Modern and anything else vaguely danceable... when the punters tire of this hotch-potch approach, maybe the scene will return to normal and play Northern oldies or Northern oldies, newies and rarities.

Remember it well. An excellent take on the Casino at the time. Picked up a copy a few months ago on eBay - it was a joy to read. The Times was, and still is, the best paper on a Sunday bar none so it treated the topic with the reverence it deserved unlike contemporary commentators on the scene who peddle the freak-show/Frank Wilson/mad collectors/dance on the hands stuff that just doesn't wash with long term devotees.

Do Wop record values - any lesson for us?
Frankie Crocker replied to Dayo's topic in All About the SOUL
I would guess that there is only a very specialist market for Doo Wop nowadays with a small number of completists in their 60's and 70's chasing one-offs and mint upgrades. There does not appear to be a market for low-end Doo Wop although these sounds are available in loads of record stores at minimal prices. On the other hand, the future of rare Northern looks to be fairly long term with plenty of young hipsters buying into an addiction that will occupy them for 50 years or more. Record players have made a comeback. Very little new music of note is being generated by an industry that has shrivelled up. All this suggests that rare Northern records should hold their value, even if small quantities are turned up by trackers of group members. The future of low end sounds is uncertain but youngsters could latch on to them in years ahead as they catch the collecting bug. Fifty years down the road, people of all ages are buying rare soul vinyl but that can't be said for Doo Wop. -
Two here. I've PM'd you.

There was an earlier post on this a year or so ago. Not been there since 2006 but there was place downtown and another in Victoria worth calling into if they are still there but don't expect to find much.

Don't talk to me about how much John Manship gets for records
Frankie Crocker replied to Kegsy's topic in All About the SOUL
True Russ, and having largely ignored 60's soul for years, John has embraced the selling of rare Northern big-time. Top dealer, top bloke and long may he keep bringing his wares to market. -

Frankie Crocker replied to Kegsy's topic in All About the SOUL
Bit of a rogue result but if you have the readies, it's your favourite record, top of the wants list and have missed out on a few lately, then you'll take a punt. The way the market is going at present, it makes sense to snap up something when you see it, especially if it is affordable. -
Big, big difference between Modern and Crossover. The latter includes late 60's verging into early 70's with a blend of old/new instrumentation and loads of good dance tracks that are floor-fillers and a great wind-down after a string of up-tempo oldies.

Tighten Up, The Mumbles, 24th September
Frankie Crocker replied to Dave Rimmer's topic in Event Playlists - Reviews
Cheers Dave. Useful to know. Don't use Facebook but the link was informative. I've been in several pubs along the Mumbles Mile but not The Vic so I will check it out one Thursday. -

Great set Dave. Who's actually putting the show on? Never come across any soul do's there even though I get there once or twice a year. For those not in the know, Swansea is worth a trip for a Joes ice cream alone. -

Before the price guides - THE BIG BLACK BOOK
Frankie Crocker replied to Vadnochka's topic in All About the SOUL
Nice read. Thanks for posting. Wish I'd hung on to the sales lists from decades ago but they piled up to ridiculous quantities. Agree with you on the RCA label, particularly white demo copies that were generally pretty common and overpriced, and in the main, still are. -
Another Madness Price On A Bootleg 45
Frankie Crocker replied to Glynthornhill's topic in Look At Your Box
It's getting to be like the Olympics - there, you have so many cheating on drugs, it would make sense to have another Olympics for those who don't want to cheat. Roll on the day when there are two soul markets, one for the cheats and a proper one for OVO buyers. Why do we have to put up with these fakes polluting the sales pages? -
Interesting that £50 is the going rate for the first few copies onto the market. Sure, it is highly collectable and demand will outstrip supply by a long way. For those attending, it's cost a lot to travel and get in, so nothing wrong in partially recouping the outlay. Not all soulies collect records so I think it's fine to sell an unwanted giveaway and blow the cash on whatever you want.
-
Scary stuff. Won't be long before they're sold as the real thing or outnumber the originals coming to market. Not so bad if it's plainly a reissue but there should be something on the label to identify it as a later edition such as the date or a symbol.

Rita & The Tiaras BARGAIN OR HAVE PRICES TOPPED OUT?
Frankie Crocker replied to Okehdownsouth's topic in Look At Your Box
Hi Phil. Compared to what? Where does it sit in the Hall of Fame? Ahead of the Professionals? Way behind the Mello Souls? On a par with Ruby? I like the record but don't own a copy. I reckon it's Championship material rather than Premiership but that's subjective of course. I reckon folk like the records more if they actually own them so I am on a hiding to nothing until I stumble across a cheap original, then I can try to like it more, even though I have heard it dozens and dozens of times.
