  1. While l'm a Motown girl through and through, but is their music pure Northern Soul? What would disqualify them are their HITS!!! Northern Soul is the semi-hits and misses of an era. Northern Soul is an acquired taste. Northern Soul is excellence songs and singers and productions that did not afford the light of day but had the ear of folks far, far away. Lorraine
  2. After you get past the first 40 bars of what you call an intro, you have a perfectly good dance record. I guess that puts me in the minority, but this record has a good beat, minimal lyrics and a dance to you drop tempo. Sounds like it was right for the time (it was in the late 60's-70's era?) Trust me, I have heard worst, much worst! Lorraine
  3. For Eddie Willis' speech only, look at The Funks - Hollywood Star started first. I think it's reply #10. The longer version, I just posted. Lorraine
  4. This is the link to the ceremony of The Funks on March 21, 2013. It's about 35 minutes long. Enjoy! Ask, (Tabs) and you shall receive! Lorraine https://www.walkoffame.com/the-funk-brothers
  5. Tabs, This is why Eddie Willis' speech was so wonderful. Eddie included everyone who contributed to The Funks' sound. Eddie mentioned the horns, violins, arrangers and background singers. Of course, I love me some Mike Terry but The Funks were considered just the rhythm section. I was so happy that the families were there to represent everyone. Lorraine
  6. I'm sorry Roburt and Dave, I didn't see your replies when I posted the Free Press' article. Apologies. (I'm getting so British!) Lorraine
  7. A wonderful article again by the Detroit Free Press on the who's who at the ceremony of The Funk Brothers Hollywood Star, March 21, 2013. https://www.freep.com/article/2013032...k-of-Fame-star Lorraine
  8. I never know if this is going to work, but The Detroit News had a beautiful article on The Funk Brothers' Hollywood Star. http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130306/ENT04/303060345/1424/ENT04/Motown-s-Funk-Brothers-get-their-star Lorraine added by site The Funk Brothers, Motown's famed backing musicians, will be getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on March 21 in Los Angeles. Percussionist Jack Ashford and guitarist Eddie Willis, as well as several of the late Funks' family members will be there to bask in the glow of the Tinseltown honor. "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity; I couldn't miss this," said Joe Hunter Jr., son of the late pianist Joe Hunter, the first bandleader for Motown's band in 1959. He scraped up the money to fly out with his wife. "Too many people sacrificed to make this happen." A fund has been set up for the Funk Brothers to offset some of the remaining expenses connected to the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony.

  10. Thank you. I thought I was having a nightmare!!!! I was saying to myself..."self, it can't be over yet!" Lorraine
  11. Hi Steve, I'm here basking in this warm glow of being part of a charted album after all these years. I always knew we had talented artists, writers, arrangers and musicians. I'm sorry that it took so long for the recognition (outside of you all) and I hope it keeps selling and selling and selling. I know I don't have to thank you, but I do. I know I don't have to say how much I love my Soul Source family, but I do. The CD still has a way to go and it's much too soon to get emotional, but I am. Lorraine
  12. From across the pond, enjoy the holidays and bring the new year in with new hopes and a better tomorrow. One of my better decisions was to join this forum to meet and engage with you. That is still one of my best years ever! Again, to everyone and to you Mark, blessings. Lorraine Chandler
  13. Thank you. The honor is mine. Jack has the tapes, so he could overdub other instuments or enhance as he pleased. I'm getting confused because I don't know when you mention The Magnificents are you really talking about The Smith Brothers? Anyway, when you have the tapes/masters, you can do with what you will. Lorraine
  14. Sean, Yes, Jimmy Coleman did help write Love You Baby. That is one of my favorite songs. Sorry, I can't help you the other songs he might have penned with Just Productions off the top of my head. Lorraine
  15. No Sean, To me it's sad. I understand getting deals, etc., but credit should be given as due. As in many cases, there was an advance, but the producer, writers and/or artist does not receive any royalties from these record companies. This is why the praise we do receive from you all is so gratifying, for me, it was worth it. Lorraine
  16. Sean, The Perfections had it first. Jimmy Coleman should get credit. Lorraine
  17. Hey Chalky, This sounds like a redo of Jack's when he moved to California. Of what song I don't know. I'm sure it's on his album. That's why I received credit. Lorraine
  18. Hey Sean, Now I know why I know this song so well, it was written by Jimmy Coleman. Heard it at rehearsals. I am aware of this label and I remember the release but HAM publishing is non-existent. Lorraine
  19. Hi Chris, Glad you started this thread. It appears that The Magnificents have one side and The Smith Brothers have the other. Not only is the lead the same, the whole song is the same as the original recording of The Smith Brothers, because it is. Lorraine
  20. Hey Boba, The Magnificents and The Smith Brothers are two different groups. Thanks for the clip. Don't Take Your Love, even though I know this song (I don't know why), is not one of mine, nor does it sound like The Smith Brothers' singing. Lorraine
  21. Hey Chalky, I totally agree. One of Eddie Parker's best performances and a damn good song, if I must say so myself. Too bad it didn't get the distribution or marketing it deserved. Again, I had no idea it was released. Lorraine
  22. Thanks Richard for the info. I now know why I couldn' find any information on MAM. Miko I know, that's the name of Jack Ashford's oldest daughter. I can follow-up from there. Lorraine
  23. Hi Boba, The Smith Brothers are from Detroit and to my knowledge no one recorded with any other group. The only change to their name is when I recorded them under the 11th Commandment. Three of them are blood brothers, hence the super tight harmony. The Funk Brothers is the rhythm section on Let Me Take Care of Your Heart. Besides Baku and Daedalian, I have no idea who those other publishers are on the Shield label or who made the deal on the Shield or MAM labels. I would have to hear Don't Take Your Love (from Me) to comment on it. Lorraine
  24. I'm here! I have no idea who gave whom the masters and would like to know who authorize the Smith Bros. to be renamed the Magnificents. This is the same record, recorded by the Smith Bros. If anyone knows how I can get in touch with MAM, please help me with the information. I've found no address or telephone number on the west coast that is legitimate. To state it clearly once again, it is the same record done by the Smith Bros. Lorraine
