I told you 'Puss Tinstanley' would be in there somewhere, followed by his 'sad tribe'! He is a leach for sure. Probably charged the octagon £250 to hear him play the box of bootlegs he dj's from! His charisma and toupee like hair are worth that alone, I guess. Anyway, if you find the clip i would love to hearit. There is actually a great band called the 'DETROIT COBRAS' who covrer Northern songs (bit like white stripes) and I love them, I was just making the point that, for me, to have a cover band portraying the music that drove the characters in the play, was historically wrong and of great consequence to the play. The guy from The British Theatre review is just one bloke with no idea about music of any kind or a very broad perspective on MODERN theatre techniques !....ive met him. He originally said of my play, that there was "too much music used to cover scene changes"! Missing the whole point that it was a musical narrative!! When I approached him about it, he recognised that he had, in his ignorance, not realised that and changed his view! As is seen in his latest review of the Bolton Panto! Anyway the words "Not with a Bang, but a Whimper" spring to mind about this whole sham! Im off up north for D.D.A and some proper soulfulness!

"We meet Danny, played by Richard Oldham, who gives a totally believable performance and captures exactly the Casino's individual style of dance, although he and his partner Suzanne, Laura Bonnah, never quite make it in the relationship stakes. There's another good performance from Suzanne's best friend Maxine, Rokhsaneh Ghawam-Shahidi, who is in love with Bolton butcher's boy Eugene, played by Rupert Hill from Coronation Street. He really should get rid of his designer stubble, which is at variance with the times. This world premiere has been re-commissioned by the Octagon and playwright, Mick Martin, was asked to rework his original piece, which I've already seen twice before. Sadly, it's at the expense of the meatier material. Casino Although there's still references to the drug scene, which ultimately caused the closure of the Casino, the original addiction scenes and the deterioration of the relationship, which gave the show a harder edge, have been lost. For those who love Northern Soul, musical director, Howard Gray and his terrific band play 60's and 70's music with terrific vocals from ex-Flying Picket, Paul Kissaun." Sounds great...trust me! "Directed by Mark Babych, it's all great fun, even with the irritating anachronisms, although for me, the very slickness of this happy/clappy production, distilled the raw energy of the original and I missed the wonderful tinny sound of the music." Says it ALL. Mick and the Octagon removed the reality of the piece to make it into a superficial piece of nothingness. Designer stubble corire stars and cleaned up reality's. I taught Rick to dance (took f--king ages!ha! ) and he's the only one mentioned. I feel Bolton have done nothing to improve on the original and their laziness and lack of insight is reaping its rewards! Total B-llocks!

The Evening News has always led the way in Music Mick, wouldn't have any knowledge or experience to rewrite the play with! He's a total Tw-t Not sure if Dave will be able to afford the £16 ticket charge. But I guess he's prepared to go the whole hog for one of his favourite bands!

Good point. Promoters who spit the dummy because of what they see as 'poor attendance'. Not recognising that the ones who are there have made the effort , so they should to!! Common problem...

Don't think you need to worry Paul, most will see this as different, less emotive led take on the original play. As would think this adaptation will centre more on the characters and less on the music against a storyline that can apply to a few vibrant dance led music venues from the Thatcher years. I dont know if you saw the play, but it didn't centre on the music. It worked because it dealt with the lives of 4 people during the Thatcher years, it lead the audience into their stories. So, it wouldn,t be a new version centring on the characters, because thats the only way the play will work and did work. The music WAS the fifth actor and it was powerful part of it because people could feel the soul of those original artists as a subtext for the emotions of the 4 characters. I think people have a freedom to put on play even if its proven to be crap because the band is useless or the storyline don't stand up without the original soundtrack. It don't make me a karaoke lover tho. Not saying they dont. But, by that reasoning I also have the right to voice my opinion. I dont think we all need to be passive in the face of s--te, because we dont want to seem the antithesis of the "live & let live" lifestyle that a lot of you have admirably adopted. If I followed that premise I wouldn't speak out against poverty, fascism, injustice of any kind! Live & let live.. Maybe they should change the soundtrack and rename it "Upon a time once at the Hacienda" as love to hear Joy Division "Dead Souls" out loud again, oh josh just realised it be a bleedin house band playing it, fk that I saw Joy Division a few times and you see, I wouldn't want to hear a cover band doing Ian Curtis's songs in this play you suggest. But you, by what you have said, would. There is the difference in our musical tastes. I think you will find that 'Joy Division' were NOT a house band.... cheers Paul

I might go to the allnighter on Saturday and the Legion on Sunday, but I wouldn't start a campaign to rubbish the cover band by saying they were going to be crap before hearing them play either. I understand Paul's point about his version of the play being about the vinyl. But this isn't his version of the play, and he hasn't heard the band play yet, or seen the actors act yet. Sort of missing the fact that it was devised with the playwright and based on my experience Dave. 6 weeks work devising the script! He WAS a mate and said that he would look after the play, not sell it down the Swanny with a cover band playinhg my memories?! Also, as Baz has said, if YOU find the idea of a cover band presenting the story of the Casino, then ME & YOU obviously have very different musical tastes. Im into 'soul' music? You? Did you only listen to Wigans Chosen few back in the day? Do you still rate them as your top band? Then go and see this Pap. By all means be critical when you are in a position to do so, but as far as I can tell (If you take away the fact they used reviews of his play to advertise this version which was patently wrong) this is no different from two different theatre companies putting on the same production. Without seeing both you cannot make a fair judgement as to which is the best. Especially as one version hasn't even opened it's doors yet. Once agian YOU miss the whole point. Ive answered this above. I know its crap, because I dont want to see a local house band singing 'Breakaway pt1' or 'I Dont Like To lose'. Thats not the story of these characters or the that of Wigan and the experience of those who went, except yourself obviously. Thats fair enough. The rest of us dont remember the tunes like that. I loved them because of the way they were produced, sung, felt, expressed, by the original artists. Its not the SONG on its own that I like, its that recording. The songs not so good that I want to hear Paul Daniels singing it on stage or some other person whos not 'feeling' it! This band is only going in for the last week of rehearsal, so i guess your happy with that commitment and feeling? I'm not doubting Paul's passion and committment to his version either, that's obvious. I just think it's a little unfair of him to be so critical of someone else's creative efforts before the doors even open to the public. THats RICH mate. Im the very person in a position to judge it. They have NO RESPECT for the subject, the people, the music and they definitely have NO SOUL. Keep the Faith!

Well put. I too am shocked at a lot of the 'pontificating' types on here......one minute they bang on about 'soul' and original labels and artists and the next, as you say, they want a Julie Andrews play about Wigan. SAD! Live and let live is a word used a lot by complacent types who once had a spark of energy, enthusiasm and emotion, but now "just cant be bothered". They talk about how they did 'this and that crazything' when they were younger and used to go and now??? Well, Julie Andrew says it all. Sound like they were just 'weekend soulies' in the first place.

I have heard them play TRUST ME, saw them in another play.S--te! So, im afraid your ASSUMPTION is wrong.... Might be good enough for you though?! Not sure what your into?

"You probably derserve to" A bit emotional here arnt we? or a bit personal - I hope its the former. Based on your views here Paul what you are implying is that nobody should be allowed to make films like Bugsy malone as this demeans gangster movies. What a poor conversive view you have. Get an independant person to see it and do an obective critique including the comparison between this and yours and that should be the end of it for you! Life is too short and in 50years time Northern soul will be just a line in the history books! regards Steve Why would I need a critique. Believe it or not, I know it will be Sh--te....just becaue of the fact it has a live, COVER band! You dont seem to get that. So we will never agree....Im into 'soul' music you see. As Joan says (you haven't replied), if you went to a nighter and their was a cover band instead of the dj's, playing the tunes, would that suit you? If so, we are from two different planets and have had very different 'soul' up bringings. Your comparisons are tenuous, so not really worth conversing with.....its not down to my "poor conversive view", I simply need an informed conversation. Finally, " a bit emotional" ? Im glad to say I am, in life generally, an emotional and visceral person...THATS WHY I LIKE SOUL! You probably need to listen to Johnny McCall - I Need You or something like that and have a go at really listening and maybe, dare I say it, 'feeling' it. Then, you too can develop some emotion. It makes life a 'fully engaged' experience....Top!

Great points mate. I agree. I did it originally as a 1 off. It grew over two years in popularity and at the point when the audience (some had seen it 3 times) started saying the lines along with the actors, I decided it was time to move on. I had a meeting with west end producers who wanted to do it with live musicians and the actors singing. I said NO! There is no way I would do something like that. It was done as a tribute to people and music that changed my life...it was my experience of a time long gone...cheers Paul-s
