I agree...i went to Wigan, but it wasnt the be all and end all of Northern soul and i certainly dont feel the need or desire to go back!
There are many bigots on this scene and a lot resent young people. Probably makes them insecure., i dont know. Thats why i enjoy Melbourne, Oslo, Milan...anywhere where theres no agenda and an open mind to music.
Think the problem is one of semantics and definition. Thats why i say im not into Northern Soul, as its been weighed down in a very negative way by a bunch of old duffers looking for ownership and control. Im definitely into SOUL and havent heard every track of every genre, so cannot say 'I dont like' a particular style...theres room for all. Young people are essential to 'SOUL' surviving. As for Northern Soul, its been argued overand manipulated so much that im not sure what it means. To me it was an attitude and energy, that led me to listen to soul music non-stop and travel each week to hear NEW and exciting music, to one of a handful of venues that was supported by a group of likeminded, open hearted souls. I think the situation nowadays, with a thousand vevues on every week (seems like!) and the 'older generations' dwindling desire to travel, is a lot more fractuous and thats why is neccessary for younger souls to kick some life into it and show some unity.....peace.
